Chapter Eighty-Four — Back to Her Roots

Zeus's POV

I was sitting on the chair with my eyes locked on Kelsey when her eyes suddenly flew open and she let out a gasp that made me run to her side ASAP.

"I need to see my mother," she said. "Right now. She might know more than she lets on.”

"Calm down, Kelsey."

“I am calm…I just need to see my mother!”

“Okay.”

She turned and blinked at me. That look told me she had braced for an argument.

"O… okay?" she said.

Chapter Eighty-Nine: Side by SideZeus's POVWe left Oakridge before dark. Kelsey hugged her mother for a long time at the door. Maya cried again, and then yelled at Kelsey for crying. Madaline didn't say much. She just held Kelsey's face in both hands, then looked at me over her shoulder."Please take care of her," she said."I will."“Thank you.” Marcus and only one of the men had brought the plain carriage up from the waystation. Kelsey climbed in without a word, and I followed. When the wheels started rolling, she didn't look back. I saw her hands, though. They were tight in her lap.The road home was long. For the first hour, neither of us spoke. Marcus sat up on the driver's box. The inside of the carriage smelled like straw and old leather. Light came through the small window in thin yellow bars and slid across the seat. She sat on one side while I sat on the other. The space between us was about the width of a loaf of bread and I kept looking at it.*Move closer to her,* my w

Chapter Eighty-Eight — The Quiet HandMalakai's POVI like being in my study best before the sun comes up. The corridors were always empty then, and the servants hadn't started their sweeping. A single candle burned beside my elbow, and the palace is as quiet as a held breath. Nobody wants anything from me at that hour. This morning's pile was a thick one. Grain counts from the western stores, A complaint from the stable masters about a shortage of oats, three petitions from border villages asking for more patrols, each written in a different hand and each saying the same thing in nearly the same words. I read them all slowly as I have a belief that quick readers miss things.I dipped my pen and signed the first order. *Four additional riders to the western road, rotating weekly.* A small thing and anyone looking over my shoulder would have nodded. The tea on my table had gone cold but I drank it anyway.Twelve Lycan wolves were dead, and the palace has not recovered from it. You can

  • Surrogate for the Lycan King    Chapter Eighty-Seven — Aurelia's Hand

kelsey's POVMy mother didn't say anything else for a while. She just sat there with her hands in mine. Then she got up, took the spade from the hook by the back door, and walked out."Mama, let me," I said."No." She didn't look back. "I put it there. I'll take it out."Zeus moved before I did. He followed her to the porch and stopped at the bottom step, close enough to help and far enough not to push. I saw her glance at him. I saw her decide not to argue. The back porch was just four boards and a rail, gone grey with weather. Mama knelt at the corner where the last plank met the dirt and started to dig. Her hands were shaking so badly that the first few scoops went wide. Nobody said a word. Zeus crouched beside her, set one big palm over her wrist, and held it steady until the shaking eased. Then he took his hand away and let her keep going. The spade hit something with a dull knock. She stopped. She stayed still for a long time. Then she put the spade down and dug the rest out wit

Chapter Eighty-Six — Legacy of AureliaKelsey's POVNobody said anything for a long moment. The wind pushed at the loose shutter. My mother stood in the doorway with her hands folded in front of her, perfectly still, and I knew that move. She pulled that move anytime she didn't want to answer a question. "I don't understand, Kelsey," she said. "What am I supposed to know about?""Mama, please. You have to help me.""Maya." She didn't look away from me. "Go check on the food, will you?"Maya's eyes darted between us. "Mama, the stew's fine. It's been fine for—""Maya."My sister shut her mouth. She gave me one worried look and slipped past into the kitchen, and I heard a pot lid clatter, louder than it needed to be."I don't know what you're talking about," Mama said again, softer now. Then she turned and walked into the house.I followed her while Zeus stayed at the threshold. "Then If you don't know what I'm talking about," I said to her back, "why are you walking away?"She didn't

  • Surrogate for the Lycan King    Chapter Eighty-Five — Mother knows best….

Chapter Eighty-Five — Mother knows best….Kelsey's POV"It still smells the same."I said to no one exactly. It smelt of woodsmoke, wet leaves, and somewhat fried onion. I'd lived inside that smell for twenty-two years and never noticed it once. Now it hit me so hard that my eyes stung.Oakridge came around the bend slowly, like something out of a dream. The crooked well, the Hendricks' fence were still leaning, Mrs. Pell's washing line still had the same grey sheets spread on them. Nothing had really changed. It had been weeks but felt like a lifetime and also still felt like I had stepped out to fetch water.I used to know this road by heart. I could walk it without looking and still tell you which dog belonged to which house, which porch step would creak under your feet, and which neighbor could get you hanged for stealing from them. My life had been simple then. I fixed fences, argued with my sister over blankets, and never gave much thought to what else might be waiting for me bey

That we should send a guard or something?""It is dangerous but we're going anyway." I slid off the bed and knelt on the floor so we were eye level. I took both her hands and felt they were ice cold. "You asked me. That's enough. Besides, I think you need to have that talk with your mother personally."Her face started to crumple, and she pulled it back together. "I thought you'd fight me on it.""I think I have lear
