Cassius

The High Ridge coven was suffocating.

The air in the stone chamber hung thick with burning sage and old magic. Four elderly witches stood in a tight circle around the altar where my wife lay, chanting in a low harmony that made my teeth ache.

I stood in the corner, arms crossed, jaw locked. I hadn't slept in three days. When the carriage couldn't get through the snowdrifts in the mountain pass, I'd carried Selena the rest of the way myself.

"The seizing has stopped, Alpha." The High Pri

The kiss hit like a collision. Cassius tasted like dark wine and ruin. His mouth was punishing, desperate, burning the thoughts right out of my head. I should have shoved him off. I should have screamed at him for calling me a liar, for hauling me through the halls, for being so blind. Instead I fisted my hands in his hair and dragged him closer, moaning as his tongue pushed deep. A growl rolled up out of his chest. Not the king. The thing that lived underneath the king. He let go of my wrists, caught my waist hard enough to bruise, and lifted me off the floor. My legs went around his hips on instinct. I held onto his shoulders while he carried me away from the door, his mouth still on mine. He didn't walk so much as stalk backward, blind, until the backs of his knees hit my mattress. We went down together. His weight pressed me into the bed. He was already hard, straining through his trousers, grinding against the thin cotton of my underwear. The oversized server's uniform

  • Surrogate to the Beastly Alpha    Chapter 41

Aria The Luna’s private chambers were completely empty. I knew Selena was still downstairs hosting the elders’ dinner, playing the frail, exhausted mother-to-be. It was the only window of time I was going to get. If I was going to save my own life, I needed physical proof that her pregnancy was a lie. I needed that dark glass vial of wolfsbane potion. I slipped inside and closed the heavy oak door behind me. I went straight for her vanity table. My hands shook as I pulled open the small velvet-lined drawers. I dug through expensive perfumes, jeweled hairpins, and silk ribbons. Nothing. The vial was gone. She must have hidden it or given it back to the Healer. Panic started to claw at my throat. I dropped to my knees, pulling open the bottom drawers of her massive mahogany dresser. I shoved aside folded silk nightgowns, searching blindly for a hidden compartment, a false bottom, anything that could prove to Cassius that his wife was a monster. "Looking for something to steal, Ar

AriaMy muscles still burned with a deep, persistent ache. Every time I took a breath, I felt the phantom weight of Cassius’s massive body pressing me into the hard canvas of the underground training mat. We had fought for two hours that afternoon. He had pushed me to my absolute physical limit, but beneath the punches and the blocks, there was a heavy, suffocating heat that neither of us could ignore. When he had finally pinned me, our chests heaving, his face only inches from mine, his control had nearly snapped. Stay in your room, he had ordered, his voice rough, strained, and laced with a feral warning. Do not leave until I send for you.I had obeyed. I was sitting on the edge of my bed, nursing a bruised shoulder in the quiet safety of my room, when the heavy oak door suddenly swung open.A senior maid marched in. Her face was set in a deep scowl, and over her arm, she carried a stiff, scratchy black-and-white server’s uniform. She threw the garments onto my mattress."Get dresse

Aria The Thornwood training ring was deep beneath the castle. It was made of dark, damp stone. The room smelled like chalk, old iron, and heavy sweat. I pushed the heavy iron doors open. My heart hammered against my ribs. I had run to my room to take off that awful maid’s uniform. Now, I wore faded leggings and a tight black tank top. It was the only clothing I could really move in. I stepped inside. The heavy iron doors slammed shut behind me with a loud clang. Cassius was already there. He had taken off his suit jacket and tie. His white shirt was tossed on a wooden bench. He stood on the padded mats in just his dark pants. His broad chest rose and fell with slow, deep breaths. I swallowed hard. My mouth went totally dry. Without his expensive clothes, Cassius didn't look like a king. He looked like a lethal predator. Thick, silver scars covered his chest and shoulders. The dim lights caught the sweat on his skin. He slowly wrapped his hands in white tape. His dark eyes lock

AriaMy hands were raw and blistered from scrubbing the marble floors of the east wing—a direct, humiliating order from Selena that morning. The winter air in the courtyard was biting, but it was the only place I could escape the suffocating reality of the castle. I sat on the edge of the freezing stone fountain, wrapping my thin maid’s apron tighter around my waist. Out here, the wind smelled like pine needles and frost, not expensive perfumes and bleach."You are going to freeze to death out here, Aria."I turned, my tense shoulders dropping as a warm smile spread across my face.Finn was making his way across the snowy courtyard, moving slower than usual. Beneath the heavy collar of his guard’s cloak, I could just barely see the edge of the thick bandages wrapping his shoulder, a brutal reminder of the rogue wolf's claws."Should you even be out of bed?" I asked, standing up."If I stay in that barracks staring at the ceiling for one more day, I will lose my mind," Finn chuckled. H

  • Surrogate to the Beastly Alpha    Chapter Thirty Seven

Cassius I spent the next three days playing the perfect Alpha and the expectant father. I sat through long council meetings about the future of my heir. Every evening, I sat by Selena's bed and held her hand. I did everything my duty demanded. But my wolf was suffocating. The beast inside my mind was restless, constantly pacing and snarling. I told myself it was just stress or the aftermath of the rogue attack. I refused to admit my wolf was agitated simply because Aria was no longer in my quarters. It was two in the morning when the restlessness finally drove me out of my study. The castle was silent and freezing. I walked down the stone corridors of the East Wing, planning to check the guard rotations just to give my mind something to do. As I rounded the corner near the grand staircase, a scent stopped me in my tracks. Rainwater. Vanilla. And the sharp tang of fresh pain. My heart kicked against my ribs. I followed the scent, my boots silent against the stone, until I rea
