Chapter 1 Second Chance

Author: Perfect Timing
"Ms. Hedge found the water source, Seraphina! How dare you steal her credit!" My boyfriend, Shawn Grayson, scolded me.

So, it really was happening. I had been reborn, and Shawn was standing there, belittling me. "Ms. Hedge is special, Seraphina. You can't just steal her credit because you're jealous of her. You would've stolen her credit if she hadn't told us about the water first!"

I couldn't care less about my soon-to-be ex-boyfriend's insults. My eyes were on Queenie Hedge. "How did you find out?"

I had to walk three hundred feet, and the path was covered in more thorny plants than I could count. The summer heat was scorching, and the thorns drew blood from me. The sweet scent of that crimson liquid attracted swarms of hungry mosquitoes.

And now this woman was telling me she could see what was happening 300 feet away just by standing there?

Queenie smiled politely and explained, "Actually, I'm an Elf Queen, and I can talk to nature. Nature will protect me and tell me where its bounty is.

"This tree told me about the water source 300 feet away." She pointed at a tree. "That place used to be a hillslope, but then the lower side caved in. There's another tree standing right above, and it's this tree's friend.

"The root's exposed, and the soil acts as a natural filter. There's a boulder underneath that has a little crater in its center. The soil filters the water, and drinkable water trickles down the roots and collects in the stone basin. It's enough for us."

The world around me started to spin. That was the exact same thing I'd gleaned from my exploration.

Queenie bowed to the tree solemnly. "Thank you."

I clenched my fists and glared at Queenie with enough intensity to burn her up. My colleagues bought her lies in my previous life just because of this trick. They defended her like she was the avatar of a goddess.

I didn't share their thoughts. If she really were the Elf Queen, then her results shouldn't be identical to mine. To prove myself, I kept searching for resources and shelter as hard as I could, but she still took all of my rightful credit in the end.

My colleagues would eagerly sing her praises even when I was the one who had set up traps to catch fish from the sea. "I can't believe the Queen predicted the catch!"

"Yeah, this isn't your work, Seraphina! If the Queen hadn't talked to the sea god with her astral projection, your flimsy trap can't even catch anything!"

I tore up the traps in a fit of fury, but Queenie wasn't done. She sighed. "I'm sorry. I have used too much healing power along the way, causing damage to my own body. I could no longer help other injured plants and animals. The island god is furious, and he let go of the catch."

Then, she shot me a knowing look. Shawn jabbed a finger at me and sneered. "I've had enough, Seraphina! You changed our trip to wilderness survival just because you wanted more fun, and now you made the island god mad! We're dead! Dead because of you!"

Getting starved for three days could make anyone go crazy. True to form, my colleagues became furious as they vented their rage on me. They pounced like hungry lions and beat me up until I was nearly mangled. Finally, they tossed me into a deep basin in the ground.

A ship passed by at that moment, and Queenie proclaimed that the island god had forgiven them. She then announced that it was the perfect time to board and leave this island. All of them followed her lead and left me here to die.

And now here I was, reborn. This time, I would make this woman pay.

Just like in my previous life, my still sane colleagues were now all shooting Queenie dubious looks.

"Elf Queen? Is that a joke?"

"Yeah, this isn't Lord of the Rings, you know."

Shawn defended her. "How else could she have found out there's water 300 feet away without even moving a muscle if she weren't the Elf Queen?"

Then, he continued, "Seraphina's an expert in wilderness survival, and she pointed in the same direction as Ms. Hedge."

"We have the numbers advantage here, so it's staying way over there. However, we're screwed if we encroach on its territory.""Are you really the Elf Queen? You're useless!"I chuckled. "Oh, I know for a fact that she's not the Elf Queen. All she did was steal my ideas and dangle them in your faces like they were magic!" My eyes turned to Queenie for a brief moment. "Let me show you how it's really done."I started, "You can eat the grass you're standing on. It's a tropical rainforest. This place is a treasure trove. Some are poisonous, yes, but most are edible. See the bananas there? They look weird, but they're edible. "Just don't eat too much unless you love having diarrhea. Also…"I rattled off a list of filling foods that could be found nearby. Queenie didn't manage to come up with those. Instead, she made them search high and low.The panicked Queenie shook her head and staggered backward. "No, no, no! I was going to say that!"Sadly, her outlandish tale wouldn't work a s

However, I'd satiated my hunger, so I frowned. "It's pitch-black out there. What if I fall into a hole? How about you ask the gods for some hares? Have the gods send them to their deaths. We need food too."Everyone's eyes swivelled back to Queenie, and she could feel the heat coming from their gazes. "It's a bit too late, yes. We'll do it tomorrow."She didn't have the power to send hares into their own deaths. I sneered. This was unlike her in my previous life. The trap I made lured hares into their deaths, and she had the gall to claim that it was a gift from the island god.We had an Elf Queen among us, and a queen needed followers. And what did followers do? A follower should do nothing but follow their queen's orders.Luckily, everyone already had some food. They managed to drift to sleep, but their aching hunger roused them from their slumber the next day.Queenie couldn't take it anymore. She pushed the still sleeping me. "Wake up, Ms. Titania."I rubbed my eyes and yawne

Fury filled Shawn's chest, but he couldn't come up with a retort. He clenched his teeth. "Give me your food!"He approached me, but I swung my stick at him hard. This guy spent most of his time in an office. So, he was no match for me, who went on survival trips and trained every day.The pain kept him away from me. Their group was probably on a hunt for supplies, but he had the misfortune of running into me. I arched an eyebrow at him. "Queenie's the Elf Queen. Talk to her if you want supplies. She won't starve you."That stoked his fury further as his scorn for me intensified. "It's all your fault! You ruined too many plants in your hunt, and the gods are angry! They won't give us anything! She begged and prayed all day, but nothing came! They want you to beg for their forgiveness first!"You're coming with me, or I'm calling everyone! Then, you'll have to come, whether you like it or not!"We were on the same island. I could never outmatch a whole group of people, no matter how

Darkness was quickly draping itself over the island, and a downpour was advancing fast. Queenie stared at the sky, worried. Their group had reinforced the cave's entrance with rows of wood so it could keep the elements out. Not even the rain could seep through that much.Queenie tugged at Shawn. "Maybe we should get Ms. Titania back."If she were closer to me, she could hear my thoughts and know about the resources hidden around her. After I left, she tried to connect to my thoughts, but all her attempts had failed. Once that happened, she became aware that I'd gone out of range. That made her panic. She had a bad feeling that things were spinning out of her control.Shawn sneered and said nonchalantly, "She's the survival expert. She can do what she does best. It's none of our business if she dies."My colleagues joined in and reassured her that it would be fine. Queenie nodded, but she was still worried and uneasy. Then, she remembered the coming ship and told herself nothing c

Shawn strode up to me and stopped me from leaving. "Why are you leaving? She's already letting you stay. What did she ever do to you? Why do you hate her so much?"I had no time for childish bickering. The downpour would come soon, and howling gales came with it. I might actually die here if I didn't set up a protective circle. So, I shoved my ex-boyfriend and said coldly, "You're right, Shawn. We're over. If we get out of here alive, fire me."I looked at the sky and ran off. Queenie tried to come after me, but Shawn stopped her. "Let her. She'll come back when the rain comes."My future ex-colleagues nodded. "Yep. It's an abandoned island. She's just a charlatan with no skills. She'll have to come back for food.""Speaking of which, let's find some."Queenie was panicking, but then she remembered a ship was coming in three days. So, she heaved a sigh of relief. Even if they couldn't find any supplies, they could surely go a day or two without food. Once the ship was here, they

I stared at Queenie in disbelief. That was something she'd never said in my previous life. So, I shoved the throng away in my fury and charged right at her. As I grabbed her collar, I demanded, "Who are you? How do you even know that?"The rims of Queenie's eyes turned red. "Ms. Titania, I've already let it slide that you changed our trip to an abandoned island. Why are you still coming after me?"That lit a fire underneath everyone else."How dare you, Seraphina! Why'd you drag us into your own mess?""We're only living because of the Elf Queen!""Go to hell! We'd be dead if it weren't for the Elf Queen!"My colleagues went straight to violence without even asking, and their fists rained down on my body.I curled up and covered my head as I shouted at the top of my lungs, "It wasn't me!"Shawn stepped forth and waved everyone down. "It was her. She told me she wanted to have a survival trip on an island. She said it would be fun, but I refused. I can't believe she changed the
