Chapter 5

Author: Porcelain Sue
By early evening, Henry's and my hunger meters had already risen to a dangerous level.

At that moment, the poolside snack bar on the eighth floor opened for service.

The pool area was open access and did not require card checks, while the bar itself only scanned cards at checkout.

Henry winked at me and said, "Time to put on a show."

A group at one table looked like they had finished eating and left the outdoor pool area, and a lot of half-eaten food was still sitting there.

While the server was not paying attention, Henry casually sat at that table and pulled the fruit platter toward himself. He frowned and complained in a voice just loud enough for nearby people to hear.

"Where did she run off to? I told her not to wander around."

Then, he stabbed a piece of watermelon and popped it into his mouth, waving at me in the distance. "Hey, Julia! Take a seat. I ordered everything!"

I immediately slipped into character and hurried over to take a seat.

A server glanced our way when he heard the commotion. However, he naturally assumed we were friends of the previous guests and paid us no more attention.

Right under the server's nose, we brazenly polished off all the remaining food. Henry even grabbed a few plates of food from other tables the servers had not cleared yet.

After a full meal, our hunger bars shot back down, and we quietly slipped back downstairs. We headed to the karaoke bar as usual to rest, but just as we reached the entrance, five burly figures burst out and instantly pinned us against the wall.

It was the scarred man and his four buddies from last night, the ones Henry had chased off with his illusion.

"So it was you two–you tricked me! I was wondering how the hell a fire started on the ship! Get them!"

Henry was slammed to the ground as the men kicked and punched him. Yet, all he could do was curl up to protect himself while muffled groans and cries of pain kept escaping him.

I tried to help, but two people held me down tight.

"Search them! Take everything valuable they've got!"

All the food we had stolen from the restaurant, and even the bottled water in our backpacks, was stripped away.

"Listen up, punk! If you try to mess with me again, I'll throw you overboard to feed the fish!" the scar-faced man snarled, kicking Henry one last time before leaving with his crew.

I quickly helped Henry up. "Are you okay?"

His face was bruised, his lip was split, and the skin at his temple was scraped raw. Deep in those eyes, I caught a glimpse of something bloodthirsty, like a predator just before the kill.

"I'll live..." He wiped the blood from his lip, his gaze still frighteningly cold. "Julia, you go rest inside the karaoke bar. I'll be there in a bit."

"You're badly hurt! Where are you going?" I tried to grab him, but he firmly pushed my hand away.

"Getting some medicine. Don't worry about me." Henry insisted on leaving.

With no other choice, I entered the karaoke bar and found a couch to lie down on. Just as I was drifting off, the system broadcast suddenly rang out.

"Players 22, 37, 48, 55, and 63 have been eliminated. They now have a one-million-dollar debt!"

I jolted wide awake, no longer feeling drowsy.

I remembered that the scarred man was Player 22.

Five people were all eliminated!

What the hell had happened?

The numbers in my account jumped wildly again as an astronomical figure accumulated under my name. The system immediately processed the final settlement. "Current surviving players: one. Congratulations, Player 66, for successfully surviving to the end and becoming the sole champion of this round of 'Ghost Cruise'!"Final prize calculation: 5.8 billion + 3.7 billion + 120 million + 500 million - 21.2 million = 10.0988 billion."My vision started to blur as the flames on the cruise ship, the charred bodies, and the pitch-black sea faded away.Everything dissolved like a washed-out oil painting.…I found myself standing in a pure white space, with the cold system interface floating in front of me.It displayed, [Congratulations, Player 66, on your final victory. Withdrawable amount: 10,098,800,000.]I stared at the number, and fragments of memory surfaced in my mind.A luxurious but terrifyingly empty mansion, covered in mess and sealed with official notices. "Player 8 has died and been eliminated. He's 322.05 million in debt. The 5.8 billion prize money has been evenly transferred to the participating killers."That astronomical sum was split among the four players who had thrown him into the sea, including Liliane. There was a brief silence while the ocean wind swept past, carrying the smell of blood. Then, greed swallowed reason in an instant. The four players whose accounts suddenly jumped by 1.45 billion each had their eyes burned with greed. They exchanged glances and swiftly lunged at the people who had been their so-called allies just moments ago."Kill them. Then all the money is mine!" one man roared with manic laughter as he pulled out a steak knife from somewhere."The agreement was bullcrap!" another woman screamed as she was tackled to the ground.Chaos exploded instantly. Screams, furious shouts, and the sound of bodies colliding tore apart the fragile alliance. Before they even threw Henry into the sea, I had slipped

That one million dollar was bait, while the rules that followed were the whip that drove people into tearing each other apart.A massive digital clock lit up behind us, and a blood-red twenty-four-hour countdown began ticking."Everyone!" I immediately shouted, my voice cutting through the commotion. "Check your accounts! Is that one million enough to pay off your debts? Enough for you to win? There's only one 100 million bonus. Can you guarantee you'll beat the guy in the safe house?"Many people instinctively checked, and their expression darkened even further.I continued, "You're in debt for hundreds of thousands, even millions! That one million is a drop in the bucket. And Henry in the safe house is too powerful, plus he has the safe house's protection. After everyone's beaten and battered with countless casualties, he'll still be in full health, then walk out and easily take down whoever's left."I yelled, "But we have one chance: find the safe house. There's a treasure trov

I projected an attitude that my limit was endless, and I was ready to throw money around. That number made everyone in the room who was still clear-headed feel suffocated.Liliane's face turned extremely ugly as she gritted her teeth and shouted, "160 million!"That figure clearly pushed her to her psychological limit.Henry remained silent for a full three seconds before squeezing out his bid through clenched teeth. "170 million."His voice was no longer as steady as before."200 million," I called out the new price almost on the heels of Henry's words, my gaze sweeping back and forth between Henry and Liliane. "So, are either of you still in?"Liliane's expression told me she had given up.I was gambling. Since Henry knew my net worth, he must have guessed I had a corresponding borrowing limit. Even if I put up 500 million, it would not exceed his borrowing limit, so as long as he kept bidding, he would win for sure.Truth was, I did not want to go that deep into debt, nor d

"Next up, a high-potency energy booster," said the auctioneer, tone tempting. "It instantly restores your energy to full and reduces stamina consumption by 50% for the next 12 hours. Only five doses are available."It was incredible stuff, especially after the nerve-wracking auction so far. At this point, it was practically a miracle drug. The bidding immediately reached a fever pitch. Everyone had already pushed their credit to the limit, and Henry secured a booster for 20 million. Without any real suspense, Liliane and I each followed, also paying 20 million for our own doses. The three of us clearly understood one another and did not engage in vicious bidding wars to drive the price even higher. There were five boosters in total, and we were guaranteed to take three of them.I was already sure that Henry and Liliane had accumulated massive assets, or the system would never have granted them such enormous credit limits. All three of us fully restored our stats, so there was no c

The system announced, "Your credit limits have been updated. You can check them in the system."I checked mine and noticed that my credit limit was 500 million dollars. The NPC auctioneer brought out the first auction item: a bottle of water. Disappointment spread across the room because it was just an ordinary plastic bottle of drinking water. The auctioneer said, "This bottle of water can restore 50 thirst points for players. The starting bid is 20 dollars. The highest bidder wins.""30.""40.""I'll borrow. 100 dollars.""I'll borrow, too. 200 dollars."The price quickly escalated. The first bottle of water sold for 500 dollars.People smiled with a look of mild confidence, thinking the rest of the auction would be just as manageable. The winner twisted the cap open and chugged it down, letting out a satisfied groan from deep in his throat. Those who had lost swallowed hard, their mouths dry.The auctioneer brought out the second bottle of water, and everyone repeated th
