Chapter 14

ZIRAEL

The evening seemed tense as Lucerion and I finally made it to Nightwood Pack territory.

. I could sense the nervous energy of the pack members even from this distance, the way they hurriedly rushed to make sure that everything was set in order for our arrival.

Alpha Monroe himself waited at the main entrance, and he was flanked by his sons, Dion and Alistar. All three men wore suitable clothes for the occasion as their posture screamed respect but not submission.

I appreciated that about Monroe – he knew how to show proper reference to those higher and stronger than him but he also did it in a way without disrespecting himself or his pack..

"Lycan King Zirael," Monroe said, stepping forward with a deep bow immediately we stopped before them as he spoke.

"Welcome to Nightwood Pack. It's an honor to have you in our territory."

"Alpha Monroe," I replied with a brief nod of my head as I continued looking around.

"Thank you for your hospitality."

Beside me, Lucerion was

Chapter 19The servant quarters, when we finally reached them, were worse than I had imagined. The rooms were barely large enough for a single person, with thin walls that would provide no privacy and doors that looked like they could be broken down without much struggle. The entire area felt more like a prison than a house."This is where you live?" I asked, unable to keep the disbelief from my voice."It's not so bad," Aida said defensively, though her tone suggested she was trying to convince herself as much as us. "We have our own room, and there's a window that lets in light during the day."I exchanged glances with Lucerion, seeing my own horror reflected in his pale eyes. As we approached what I assumed was their room, I noticed someone pacing anxiously in front of the door. It was a middle-aged woman in servant's clothing, her face creased with worry as she wrung her hands."Aida!" she called out when she spotted us, relief flooding her features. "Thank the Moon Goddess you

Chapter 18LUCERIONThe fact that this child was more concerned about her mother's welfare because she was worried her mum would get hurt than her own hunger made something break inside my chest. "No one will punish anyone," I said, my voice fierce with confidence and absolute, gaining a look from Zirael, who was realizing that I was getting more affected than I liked to admit. "I promise you that."Zirael leaned forward in his chair, his expression serious as he asked her."Aida, when was the last time you had a full meal?"She looked confused by the question. "I don't know what you mean.""He means," I said carefully, "when was the last time you ate until you were completely full? Until you didn't want any more food?"Her brow furrowed in concentration. "I... I don't remember."The simple honesty of her answer made me want to tear something apart with my bare hands. This innocent child couldn't even remember what it felt like to not be hungry."That's going to change," I said, mov

Chapter 17 Zirael and I exchanged a look. We were able to understand what little Aida was still innocent of– the human woman had apparently been providing personal service to the Alpha's sons, and her withdrawal from that role had created tension among the other servants, so they were taking out their frustration on the little girl, because they felt, it was because of Aida, that her mum stopped."The woman who hurt you," Zirael continued carefully, trying not to alarm Aida whom we had already gotten to slowly trust us that we wanted to help, "was she angry on behalf of the brothers, or for her own reasons?"Aida's brow furrowed in concentration trying to remember it well. "I think... I think she was angry because now she has to do some of the work Mummy used to do. And she doesn't like Mummy very much anyway.""Why doesn't she like your mother?" I asked, though I was beginning to suspect the answer."Because Mummy is prettier," Aida said bluntly, not skipping a beat as I fought the

Chapter 16ZIRAELI studied her carefully, as I took notice of the way she held herself – protective, defensive, but not too submissive. Even terrified, she maintained self respect and dignity that wasn't normally found in someone so young."You're injured," I said, observing her wounds as I kept my voice neutral. She looked down at her arms, where bruises were already beginning to form as she hid it behind her back. "It's nothing," she said quickly. "I'm used to it."The words hit me like a physical blow as I felt my breath hitch hearing her words. Used to it. This child was used to being hurt, used to being treated as less than human and she didn't see it as a big deal, and probably saw it as one of her daily activities. And suddenly, I understood why Lucerion had been so angry."What's your name?" I asked gently, trying to remain calm so I wouldn't scare her off."Aida," she replied, her voice trembling a bit as she held my gaze and added. "Aida Cross.""And the woman who was hi

Chapter 15ZIRAELI felt him pout against my neck, like someone who looked miserable because he wasn't offered candy when I didn't immediately offer my throat. "Later," I said firmly, keeping my foot down on this. "When we're not in a bathtub in someone else's territory.""Promise?" he asked, pulling back to look at me with those pale eyes that seemed to see through my soul."Promise," I confirmed, reaching up to stroke his damp hair as I pushed it gently from his face before adding. "Now help me wash, so we will be done quickly and then we can continue this conversation somewhere more comfortable."An hour later, we were settled on the couch in the sitting room, both of us were dressed in loose clothing that wouldn't affect our movement at all yet making it easily accessible if he needed to feed.. I had taken my usual position in the corner of the couch where I was pouring through some newspapers that had been kept here with some magazines, while Lucerion had draped himself across
