CHAPTER 45

“Are you sure, Christine?” Alexander Ward asked. This was not good. The Prosecutor would have even more motive if this got out.

“Yes, yes, I saw her when she came into the office. I will never forget her face.” Christine touched her hand to her chest, it felt like something heavy lay there, forcing the breath out of her. “Why didn’t he say anything?”

“I will ask him about it.” Alexander said, his face grim. That boy had a lot of explaining to do, he thought to himself. Heaven help him.

“I – I would like to go home now, Mr. Ward.” Christine pushed the chair back to stand. She needed space, to be alone to think all this through.

“Of course, my dear.” Taking out a few Dollars to pay for their lunch, he left it on the table, and they made their way to the car.

In the car they stayed silent, each with their own thoughts. Christine watched the buildings go by in a blur without registering, Chase’s face was all she saw and the last words he spoke to her repeated over and over in her mind.
