Chapter 3

Author: Chirping Cicadas
Isaac's assurances and explanations eased some of my worries. It was true that children's minds could work in strange ways sometimes.

There was a time when Caleb kept saying he wanted to eat brains, and it had taken me a while to realize he meant spaghetti bolognese. I laughed myself silly once I figured that out. Perhaps he had indeed mixed up the story Isaac told him with reality this time.

The next morning, I made a point of taking Caleb to kindergarten myself. As soon as we arrived at the front gates, I saw Bryan and Annette walking toward us.

Bryan was wearing a blue jacket, bouncing along as he walked. The moment he saw us, he waved his little hand and called out, "Caleb! Mrs. Sheridan!"

He was smiling brightly, and he seemed to be in good spirits. It didn't look like he'd suffered any kind of mistreatment.

I breathed a sigh of relief and quickly took Caleb over to them.

"I'm really sorry about yesterday, Annette. Caleb is too young to know better. He must've mistaken a story for reality. I apologize for causing you concern."

Annette's expression remained displeased, but once she saw Bryan and Caleb holding hands and laughing together, her tone eased up.

"Let's just forget about it. He's just a child, and he didn't do it on purpose. Just make sure he doesn't listen to so many ridiculous stories from now on."

As I watched the two children walk into the kindergarten together, most of my doubts finally faded away. I turned around and headed to work, my steps noticeably lighter.

Never could I have imagined that just after the lunch break ended that day, messages would start flooding the parents' group chat. The rapidly climbing number of unread messages couldn't be more alarming. I hastily tapped into the group chat to find the parents in an uproar.

One of them posted a photo from the kindergarten. It showed several teachers gathered by the small fish pond in the kindergarten.

Then a message appeared that made my blood run cold.

"One of the teachers just confirmed that Bryan fell into the fish pond. They couldn't resuscitate him."

I stared at the words on the screen, my fingers trembling uncontrollably as my mind went completely blank.

The little boy who'd been happily bouncing around and had greeted me that morning was now dead? How did he end up drowning out of nowhere? How devastated must Annette be right now?

Then I recalled what Caleb had said about Bryan being taken away by a teacher and brought into a punishment room. Could it be…

I didn't dare go down that train of thought. It felt like someone was squeezing my heart tightly. I even had difficulty breathing.

In the surveillance footage provided by the kindergarten, all the children were lying down in their designated spots during nap time, but Bryan had sat up. While the teacher on duty had her back turned as she tucked in one of the other kids, he'd quietly slipped out of the nap room.

He walked all the way to the playground without the slightest hesitation, heading straight for the fish pond. He grabbed the railing around the pond and climbed over it.

The water instantly closed over his head. He struggled several times, his little hands flailing wildly, but there wasn't a single person around.

Within seconds, his body slowly sank beneath the water, and the surface soon became still again.

The footage rocked me to the core.

Bryan was usually terrified of water. The last time the class had an activity at the pool, he hadn't even dared to enter the shallow end. How could he have willingly climbed into the fish pond? Could this really have been a coincidence?

I suddenly remembered what Caleb had said the day before. A chill ran down my spine, and I hurriedly messaged Annette.

"Annette, you have to hold yourself together. Yesterday, Caleb said that he saw a teacher take Bryan away, and now this has happened. I just feel like something isn't right. There might be more to this."

The moment I sent the message, my phone rang. It was Annette. Her voice was thick with sobs, but it was also filled with hysterical fury.

"What more could there possibly be to it? I just watched the complete surveillance footage. Before nap time, Caleb was talking to Bryan for quite a while. After that, Bryan seemed completely out of it, and then this happened during nap time!

"After all that nonsense you told me yesterday, I'm sure Caleb must have said something to Bryan and scared him so badly that he fell into the fish pond!

"Your Caleb has everything to do with what happened to my son! We've already called the police. I'm going to expose your child's behavior and have everyone know that he killed my son!"

During the police interrogation, Vera confessed to all of her crimes. She admitted that the first time she saw Bryan pick the celery out of his bowl and toss it aside, she was instantly reminded of her son. In his final days, he'd been so hungry that he had to dig out moldy food scraps from the trash.Vera believed Bryan's wastefulness was a sign of his disregard for the importance of food and the value of life, so she started hypnotizing him every day during nap time.During the hypnosis sessions, Vera learned that Bryan wasn't actually allergic to celery. When he was little, he had eaten celery once and disliked the taste. He deliberately spat it out, but he did it in such an extreme manner that he even had trouble breathing afterward. His parents had assumed that it was an allergic reaction and told everyone that he was allergic to celery.Vera was furious about that. To her, Bryan's picky eating was practically a sin. She forced him to eat large amounts of celery at home every

As I stood at the entrance, every second felt like an eternity. The wind whipped against my face, yet I couldn't feel it. It felt as though my heart was being roasted over a fire pit, while a scalding stone seemed lodged in my throat. Even breathing hurt.I stared at the kindergarten building, unable to look away. My mind kept going over all the dangers Caleb might have encountered. Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. Finally, the security guard emerged from the building holding Caleb's hand.I hurriedly wiped away my tears, my body shaking from the emotional distress. I watched as Caleb came out with the security guard. The moment he saw me, he threw himself into my arms like a frightened little bird.I held him tightly, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The ax that had been hanging over my heart finally lifted, and my eyes instantly burned with tears.Just then, the sound of police sirens came from the distance. I took Caleb by the hand and hurried toward the

Goosebumps broke out all over my body.It was terrifying enough for an adult to hear something like that, let alone a child. Just listening to it had sent chills down my spine.Later on, the parents noticed something was wrong with the children, and Vera was fired from her previous kindergarten. It so happened that Caleb's kindergarten had an opening for a teacher at the same time, so she applied and got the job.At last, I had the complete picture. This explained why Vera reacted so strongly to Bryan's picky eating and Samuel's strained relationship with his little sister.I took a deep breath, doing my best to stay calm."Leon, are you sure this information is accurate? Is there any chance you got something wrong?""Kate, I had three different people look into it, and I even found a neighbor who lived in the same complex as Vera back then. The information couldn't be truer."Vera has basically directed her hatred for her son's stepbrother, the boy who was never properly discip

Ms. Jones never explicitly told Samuel to give up his chicken, but her implication couldn't be clearer.Samuel's hand paused, still gripping the spoon tightly. His brows furrowed slightly. In a small but firm voice, he protested, "But Ms. Jones, Mrs. Potts served the chicken, and there's plenty left. If Evan wants more, he can ask her for more. I like chicken, too, and Evan isn't my little brother. I don't want to give him my chicken."That was how a child should react. He should be able to express his preferences openly, rather than sacrifice his own wishes just to be a thoughtful and sensible child. However, the moment Ms. Jones heard this, the smile vanished from her face. The corners of her lips straightened, and her gaze turned cold. She said nothing more. She simply straightened up and stared down at Samuel, the look in her eyes seemingly emanating a kind of pressure that made Samuel's head slowly droop down.I was still observing them through the binoculars, my heart clench

The next morning, I took Caleb to kindergarten. As soon as we arrived at the entrance, I saw Ms. Jones. She had faint dark circles under her eyes, making her seem a little haggard. I figured she wouldn't have gotten much sleep after Annette's outburst."Ms. Jones, don't take what Annette said too much to heart. She's just grieving right now," I said.Ms. Jones' lips twitched into a strained smile, and she said softly, "I know. Thank you for your concern."Without saying anything else to me, she turned to the side to receive the other children. Though I didn't catch anything unusual from her expression, I still felt a little unsettled.Just then, Samuel and Maureen arrived. The moment Samuel saw Ms. Jones, he stopped in his tracks.Clutching the hem of Maureen's blouse tightly, he said in a timid voice, "Ms. Jones, I got along really well with my little sister yesterday. I even let her have my drawing book all to herself."He kept his head lowered as he spoke, his voice barely aud

The police told Annette the results of their investigation and said that, for the time being, they had found no connection between Caleb and Bryan's death.Unexpectedly, Annette turned her anger toward Ms. Jones instead. She sent several voice messages in the parents' group chat, her voice furious and tearful."If Ms. Jones hadn't failed to keep an eye on the children during nap time, how could Bryan have gotten out and fallen into the pond? She was negligent! She needs to be held accountable for this!"However, Maureen Carter, whose son, Samuel Lewis, was one of Caleb's classmates as well, spoke up in defense of Ms. Jones."Annette, you need to calm down. Ms. Jones has been a very responsible teacher all along. My son used to fight with his little sister over toys every day, but now, whenever he gets home, he volunteers to let her have anything she wants. He even lets her pick her toys first. I've been meaning to thank Ms. Jones properly for that!"Another parent chimed in, "That
