Chapter 2

Author: Chirping Cicadas
I opened Annette's message.

"Look, I was right! Bryan has been eating so well lately. He used to be such a picky eater, but he's finally gotten over it. I took him to the hospital for a checkup today, and the doctor said he's no longer allergic to any foods.

"We have the new Ms. Jones to thank for that. She said she used some kind of desensitization therapy. I can't thank her enough."

As I stared at the message, my brows slowly tightened. How could an allergy just disappear like that?

When it came to allergies, even doctors had their hands tied. How could Ms. Jones have possibly treated Bryan with some kind of desensitization therapy?

My fingers flew across the screen as I carefully composed my reply.

"Perhaps you shouldn't celebrate just yet, Annette. Allergies aren't something to take lightly. If even the doctors at the hospital couldn't do anything about it, how could it suddenly get better so easily? Also, Caleb said he saw a teacher take Bryan away and put him in a punishment room.

"I know you sent me the video, but I still have a bad feeling about it. Please check Bryan and see if he has any injuries. If something really happened, we can confront the kindergarten together and get some answers."

After reading my message, Annette grew worried and said she would check him immediately.

I gripped my phone and waited for more than ten minutes, my heart in turmoil. I hoped Bryan was fine, but I also couldn't shake the niggling feeling I had after hearing what Caleb told me. There was no reason for him to say those things if they weren't true.

Suddenly, my phone started ringing with an incoming call, and Annette's name appeared on the screen.

I hurriedly answered, but before I could even speak, a barrage of angry shouting exploded in my ear, leaving me dumbfounded.

"What on earth is wrong with you! Just because you don't know how to teach your own child, you let him go around making things up? I just asked Bryan, and there was absolutely no such thing as a teacher taking him to some kind of punishment room!

"What's Caleb's problem anyway? He and Bryan are such good friends. How could he say such things about Bryan, as if he wanted Bryan to be suffering somehow? This all happened because you haven't raised him properly! You had me scared half to death just now! What's your deal?"

Gripping the phone tightly, I stood there with my lips parted. I didn't know how to refute her words, so all I could do was hastily apologize.

Considering what Annette had just said, I figured Bryan was fine. If he were injured, as his mother, Annette would've surely marched over to demand answers from the kindergarten. She wouldn't be wasting her time blowing up at me instead.

Could Caleb really have been lying?

But I knew Caleb too well. He had never made up something this outrageous.

The doubts in my mind only grew. After ending the call, I stared blankly at my phone for a long time, my thoughts a complete mess.

After the family day event ended, Caleb fell asleep in my arms, looking pretty worn out. I stared at his sleeping face. In the end, I couldn't bring myself to question him again. I simply stroked his head gently, thinking I would talk to him about it tomorrow.

It was almost midnight when my husband, Isaac Sheridan, finally came home, dragging his exhausted body through the door. He was a police officer. Recently, he'd been busy with a kidnapping case, which meant constantly working long hours and barely spending any time at home.

I pulled him down onto the couch and told him everything that had happened during the day, leaving out nothing—not Caleb's words, not Annette's reaction, and not Ms. Jones' strange behavior.

Listening to the story, Isaac frowned at first, but then he chuckled.

"You're just too worried. How could anything that bizarre actually be happening? Kids don't necessarily lie, but they can easily mix reality and imagination together and start saying all kinds of things.

"Besides, there are surveillance cameras all over the kindergarten. Parents can request to see the footage whenever they want. What teacher would be bold enough to take a child away in broad daylight and lock him up in some sort of punishment room?"

He paused, as if recalling something, before adding, "Oh, right. A few days ago, I told Cal about a case where someone kidnapped his enemy's child, right?

"I used it to teach him not to leave with strangers. Maybe the details of the story somehow got mixed up with his memories, and he thought it happened to Bryan."

During the police interrogation, Vera confessed to all of her crimes. She admitted that the first time she saw Bryan pick the celery out of his bowl and toss it aside, she was instantly reminded of her son. In his final days, he'd been so hungry that he had to dig out moldy food scraps from the trash.Vera believed Bryan's wastefulness was a sign of his disregard for the importance of food and the value of life, so she started hypnotizing him every day during nap time.During the hypnosis sessions, Vera learned that Bryan wasn't actually allergic to celery. When he was little, he had eaten celery once and disliked the taste. He deliberately spat it out, but he did it in such an extreme manner that he even had trouble breathing afterward. His parents had assumed that it was an allergic reaction and told everyone that he was allergic to celery.Vera was furious about that. To her, Bryan's picky eating was practically a sin. She forced him to eat large amounts of celery at home every

As I stood at the entrance, every second felt like an eternity. The wind whipped against my face, yet I couldn't feel it. It felt as though my heart was being roasted over a fire pit, while a scalding stone seemed lodged in my throat. Even breathing hurt.I stared at the kindergarten building, unable to look away. My mind kept going over all the dangers Caleb might have encountered. Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. Finally, the security guard emerged from the building holding Caleb's hand.I hurriedly wiped away my tears, my body shaking from the emotional distress. I watched as Caleb came out with the security guard. The moment he saw me, he threw himself into my arms like a frightened little bird.I held him tightly, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The ax that had been hanging over my heart finally lifted, and my eyes instantly burned with tears.Just then, the sound of police sirens came from the distance. I took Caleb by the hand and hurried toward the

Goosebumps broke out all over my body.It was terrifying enough for an adult to hear something like that, let alone a child. Just listening to it had sent chills down my spine.Later on, the parents noticed something was wrong with the children, and Vera was fired from her previous kindergarten. It so happened that Caleb's kindergarten had an opening for a teacher at the same time, so she applied and got the job.At last, I had the complete picture. This explained why Vera reacted so strongly to Bryan's picky eating and Samuel's strained relationship with his little sister.I took a deep breath, doing my best to stay calm."Leon, are you sure this information is accurate? Is there any chance you got something wrong?""Kate, I had three different people look into it, and I even found a neighbor who lived in the same complex as Vera back then. The information couldn't be truer."Vera has basically directed her hatred for her son's stepbrother, the boy who was never properly discip

Ms. Jones never explicitly told Samuel to give up his chicken, but her implication couldn't be clearer.Samuel's hand paused, still gripping the spoon tightly. His brows furrowed slightly. In a small but firm voice, he protested, "But Ms. Jones, Mrs. Potts served the chicken, and there's plenty left. If Evan wants more, he can ask her for more. I like chicken, too, and Evan isn't my little brother. I don't want to give him my chicken."That was how a child should react. He should be able to express his preferences openly, rather than sacrifice his own wishes just to be a thoughtful and sensible child. However, the moment Ms. Jones heard this, the smile vanished from her face. The corners of her lips straightened, and her gaze turned cold. She said nothing more. She simply straightened up and stared down at Samuel, the look in her eyes seemingly emanating a kind of pressure that made Samuel's head slowly droop down.I was still observing them through the binoculars, my heart clench

The next morning, I took Caleb to kindergarten. As soon as we arrived at the entrance, I saw Ms. Jones. She had faint dark circles under her eyes, making her seem a little haggard. I figured she wouldn't have gotten much sleep after Annette's outburst."Ms. Jones, don't take what Annette said too much to heart. She's just grieving right now," I said.Ms. Jones' lips twitched into a strained smile, and she said softly, "I know. Thank you for your concern."Without saying anything else to me, she turned to the side to receive the other children. Though I didn't catch anything unusual from her expression, I still felt a little unsettled.Just then, Samuel and Maureen arrived. The moment Samuel saw Ms. Jones, he stopped in his tracks.Clutching the hem of Maureen's blouse tightly, he said in a timid voice, "Ms. Jones, I got along really well with my little sister yesterday. I even let her have my drawing book all to herself."He kept his head lowered as he spoke, his voice barely aud

The police told Annette the results of their investigation and said that, for the time being, they had found no connection between Caleb and Bryan's death.Unexpectedly, Annette turned her anger toward Ms. Jones instead. She sent several voice messages in the parents' group chat, her voice furious and tearful."If Ms. Jones hadn't failed to keep an eye on the children during nap time, how could Bryan have gotten out and fallen into the pond? She was negligent! She needs to be held accountable for this!"However, Maureen Carter, whose son, Samuel Lewis, was one of Caleb's classmates as well, spoke up in defense of Ms. Jones."Annette, you need to calm down. Ms. Jones has been a very responsible teacher all along. My son used to fight with his little sister over toys every day, but now, whenever he gets home, he volunteers to let her have anything she wants. He even lets her pick her toys first. I've been meaning to thank Ms. Jones properly for that!"Another parent chimed in, "That
