Chapter 2

Auteur: Liora Z
The next morning, I didn't wait for Hudson to rouse me. I dressed quickly and quietly.

Besides Hudson and me, our group had Jax, a guy with lightning powers.

When Jax saw me up this early, helping him inventory supplies, his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. I didn't have to guess what he was thinking.

I never touched the dirty work. I was the delicate princess everyone expected Hudson to protect.

But I didn't want to die. To survive in this wasteland, I couldn't just stop being a burden; I had to learn how to defend myself.

As long as I stop clinging to Hudson, he will probably feel a massive wave of relief, I told myself.

I didn't complain about the heat once all day. During our lunch break, I even volunteered to take the wheel, though Hudson shot the idea down immediately.

By evening, we set up camp at an abandoned motel.

I hopped out to help Jax carry the supply crates, keeping my head down and pretending I couldn't feel Hudson's intense gaze burning into me as he leaned against the truck door.

After dropping the last crate of water in the room, I grabbed Jax's arm. "Jax, can you teach me some self-defense?"

Before the apocalypse, Jax was an MMA trainer. He looked surprised, but seeing how deadly serious I was, he nodded.

For three hours in the sweltering backyard of the motel, I practiced basic side-kicks and reverse dagger grips over and over again. By the time it was pitch black, my arms were so weak I couldn't even unscrew a water bottle.

"That's enough for today. You pick things up fast," Jax smiled, wiping sweat from his forehead.

I smiled back, genuinely happy. "Thanks, Jax."

Dragging my exhausted body back through the motel hallway, a towering shadow suddenly fell over me as I rounded the corner.

Before I could even gasp, I was backed into the narrow corner of the wall.

It was Hudson.

He had changed into a black tank top and smelled like cold water from a fresh shower, but the aura radiating off him was more suffocating than the midday sun.

"What exactly is going on today?" he asked, staring down at me, his voice dangerously quiet.

I kept my eyes glued to the dust on his boots. "What do you mean? I just wanted to help out more."

"Is that so?"

Hudson let out a dark chuckle. His fingers hooked under my chin, forcing me to look up at him.

"You haven't said a single unnecessary word to me all day. And..."

And you didn't...

I bit my lip, knowing exactly how that sentence ended. He meant I hadn't kissed him today.

Usually, no matter how dangerous things got, I would always sneak a kiss when the others weren't looking. I knew he was under a lot of pressure as our leader, and I used to think it helped him relax.

But today, we hadn't even made eye contact, let alone kissed.

His thumb slowly brushed across my lower lip, sending an involuntary shiver down my spine.

"Eliza, you're avoiding me."

"I'm not!" I lied, averting my gaze, trying to make my voice sound considerate. "You work so hard leading us every day. I was just too immature before. I can't... I can't keep being your burden."

"Burden?"

The word seemed to trigger something dangerous inside him. His brows snapped together, and a dark, incomprehensible emotion surged in his deep eyes.

"Who the hell told you you're a burden?"

"I just... mmph!"

I didn't get to finish.

In the next second, he pinned both my wrists above my head and pressed his body flush against mine, crushing me against the wall.

His mouth crashed down on mine, fierce and relentless. This wasn't his usual indulgent, loving kiss. This was a punishment. A claiming.

He didn't let up until I couldn't breathe, forcing me to pound my fists against his chest in protest. Even when he finally pulled back, he kept me caged between his arms.

He stared at my swollen lips and teary eyes, his chest heaving.

"Don't ever have such stupid thoughts again." He paused, his jaw clenching. "And don't ever smile at Jax like that again."

He gave me two softer, pacifying pecks on the lips before spinning on his heel to take the first watch, leaving me pinned to the wall, my heart hammering like it was trying to crack my ribs open.

We got back on the road, leaving the scent of blood to the desert wind. I was back in the passenger seat of Hudson's SUV, but this time, there was no escaping his gaze. He drove with one hand on the wheel; his other hand had mine locked in a death grip, fingers laced tightly, as if I would vanish if he let go. In the backseat, Maya—who had just finished wrapping Jax's leg—leaned forward, uncharacteristically gossipy. "So, Eliza, considering the epic cold war you guys had going on, did you actually break up?" Maya teased. "If you did, let me know so I can tell Ethan. He's still pining." My face flushed. I opened my mouth to say, "We did—""No, we didn't." Hudson cut me off instantly. He shot Maya an icy glare through the rearview mirror, delivering his verdict with absolute arrogance. "Ethan doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. Tell him to back off. Eliza and I are perfectly happy, and we are never breaking up." I was so flustered by his blatant claim that I couldn't speak, l

In a battle between gifted, a three-second freeze was all it took to flip the script. Hudson and Jax didn't waste a millisecond. Lightning and ice pierced through the raiders' chests. The tide turned instantly. The brutes were frozen solid before they could even scream. But just as I exhaled, thinking we were safe, the unexpected happened. The scarred leader, with his dying breath, pulled the trigger of his rifle. BANG! A searing, tearing agony ripped through my side. The sheer force of the bullet threw me backward onto the dirt. "Eliza!" As I hit the ground, I heard Hudson's raw, throat-tearing scream. My vision blurred, but I could clearly see the man who was always so stoic, so untouchably cold, completely lose his mind. The mask shattered. He scrambled and sprinted toward me, dropping to his knees and pulling my bleeding body fiercely into his chest. "No... no... Eliza, look at me! Don't you dare close your eyes!" Hudson's hands were shaking violently. He clamped his han

Before I could even process the excitement of potentially having powers, the SUV slammed on its brakes. "Get down! Ambush!" Hudson roared from the driver's seat. Through the windshield, I saw them—a small army of heavily armed raiders swarming the dunes ahead. The Vipers. Their leader, a scarred man with fire powers, laughed maniacally as he raised his hands, hurling massive fireballs at our convoy like a meteor shower. BOOM! The explosion sent a shockwave that shattered our windows into a million pieces. Looking at the leader's scarred face, absolute terror and burning hatred warred inside me. He was the monster who had torn me apart in my nightmare. The car doors flew open. Hudson and Jax didn't hesitate. Ice spikes and lightning bolts tore through the air as they fought back. But the Vipers didn't just have powers; they had heavy military artillery. "Argh!" Jax cried out as a stray bullet tore through his thigh, dropping him into a pool of his own blood. "Jax!" Maya yelled

After that night, the cold war officially began. Normally, even if I pushed him away, Hudson would inevitably gravitate back to me. Even if he just glanced my way, he would subtly maneuver himself to keep me in his line of sight. But now, he treated me with the cold, ruthless efficiency of a stranger. Even when handing out rations, he didn't spare me a second glance. Things were going exactly as I had planned, but I didn't feel relieved at all. At noon, we took a break by a dried-up riverbed. I sat hugging my knees in the shade of the SUV. A few yards away, Hudson and Maya were speaking in low tones, mapping out the route. They looked so perfect together. My heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise. I forced myself to look away, burying my face in my arms. But a fear far worse than heartbreak was currently paralyzing me. According to the map, we were about to cross into the territory of the Vipers—the most brutal raider gang in the wasteland. In my vision, they were the

Sometime in the middle of the night, I woke up groggy to a bone-deep cold creeping across the room. Before I could even process it, a large, dark figure slid under the covers. A familiar, aggressive scent enveloped me as strong arms pulled me tightly into a hard chest. It was Hudson. He was supposed to be downstairs on watch with Maya. Why was he here?"Hudson..." I breathed, but he bit down on my earlobe—hard enough to sting. I flinched. "Why?" his voice rumbled in the dark, dangerously hoarse. "You smile at Jax, you smile at that kid Ethan you just met, but I'm the only one you push away?"I froze, my mind racing. I couldn't tell him about the visions. I couldn't tell him that he was destined to leave me for Maya, and I was just trying to survive. "I... I just want to be more independent," I swallowed hard, trying to sound brave. "Independent?" That word was the spark that ignited the powder keg. Hudson let out a low laugh that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. NO, HE WASN'T HINTING. HE WAS OUTRIGHT THREATENING ME. If anyone saw him take those..."Eliza!" Ethan jogged over, completely oblivious to the tension, his rifle slung over his shoulder. "What are you guys looking for? Need help carrying anything?"The temperature around Hudson plummeted to absolute zero. He let go of my wrist, only to wrap his heavy arm securely around my lower back, pulling me flush against his side. "First-name basis already? Are you two that tight?" Hudson leaned down, his lips brushing my ear as he scoffed softly. Then, he lifted his head and locked eyes with Ethan. "She's my girlfriend. Stay away from her."Ethan's sunny smile froze. He looked at us—at how tightly Hudson held me—and awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry... I didn't know. I'll, uh, go check the front." He practically sprinted away. Alone in the aisle again, the air felt thick and heavy. Hudson tilted his head down, his calloused thumb hook
