Chapter 4

Author: Superhero
Perhaps it was written in the stars that only one of us could enter this world. Even though Mom suffered a severe hemorrhage, Juliette survived.

Sitting beside Mom's frail form, I felt as though I had gone completely numb. This was the woman who had showered me with affection my entire life. Up until a moment ago, I had held onto a final sliver of hope, telling myself she was just saying those things in the heat of the moment, that she couldn't possibly mean it.

Yet, the scene from earlier kept replaying in my mind. Mom had meant every word; she seriously wanted to kill me.

Dad stormed into the room, but it wasn't out of concern for me. "I thought we agreed this child had to be born! If you miscarry now, how the hell do you expect our company's revenue to double?"

Pointing at him, Mom shrieked, "What if the company does even better without this jinx? Don't you hate this curse of a child, too? Getting rid of him now is way less of a headache than raising him all over again! Don't tell me you actually want to raise him a second time just to watch the company slowly go bankrupt?"

Her hysteria mounted, flailing her limbs. "It's his own fault for having such a wretched fate! Why did he have to be a jinx? If he had been just an ordinary child, I could've raised him properly!"

Standing beside them, the nurse timidly interjected. "Excuse me, ma'am... You're carrying a girl. The fetus that was reduced earlier... was your son."

Mom froze for a moment before seizing a cup from the nightstand and hurling it at the nurse. "Get the hell out! I can't believe you're lying to make me keep this baby. I'm his mother. Do you think you know better than me?

"It's all your fault, you useless quacks! For the sake of a jinx, you killed my lucky charm. I'll make sure you all pay for this!"

The nurse tried to show Mom the medical report, but Dad ruthlessly drove her out of the room. He then declared, "I've already found another pregnant woman whose due date matches yours, and I've checked; she's carrying a girl. You must carry this baby to term now! I'll not allow the company's future to be jeopardized in this lifetime!"

I later learned that in our previous life, no matter how meticulously my parents groomed me to be a girl, the company's revenue never stopped spiraling downward.

Mom was eventually forced to accept reality. Yet, she was still determined to take her spite out on me.

Consequently, she would only let them inject half a bottle of the nutrition IV each time, and she barely touched her food. She also made a habit of startling Juliette, knowing that I had always been easily startled.

"In your previous life, you were born so robust and intelligent, but that was only because you stole it all from my daughter! This time, I'll make damn sure you're a sickly weakling, the kind no amount of money can cure! When that time comes, I'll have the perfect excuse to bury you alongside my daughter!"

My heart had gone numb. I wanted to leave, yet an invisible force kept me bound strictly to Mom's side.

Every day, she found new, twisted ways to torment Juliette. "Just because you survived doesn't mean you get to live the same good life you had in your previous life!"

Had I led a good life in my previous life? I closed my eyes, at a complete loss for words.

To be honest, I never liked having my hair braided, nor did I enjoy wearing princess dresses. I wanted to learn how to swim, and I wanted to roughhouse and get into scraps with the other children. However, I knew that the only way to make Mom and Dad happy was to obey their every whim.

Therefore, from a young age, I had learned to read the room and do my best to perform accordingly.

After all these years, I couldn't even remember what I actually liked anymore. All I had ever wanted was to make Mom and Dad happy. Now, knowing they didn't love me, I felt like I was finally free.

Because of her constant, self-destructive antics, Mom went into labor early. The moment she was wheeled into the delivery room, her face was bright with a manic smile. "I'm going to avenge my daughter!"

So, she deliberately refused to push.

It didn't take long for disaster to strike; she suffered an obstructed labor as the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around Juliette.

Mom, however, refused to consent to an emergency C-section. "If he dies in my womb, that's just his wretched fate!"

"But you're putting your own life in grave danger too!" the nurse cried out.

In the end, after a delay of 30 minutes, Mom was finally wheeled into the operating room. The second Juliette was brought out, I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief for her sake.

The nurse held the baby up to let Mom check the baby's gender. Gathering the very last of her strength, Mom pushed Juliette away with sheer disgust. "What's there to look at with a jinx of a son? Get him away from me! He's nothing but bad luck."

Yet, the nurse brought Juliette a little closer to Mom. "Ma'am, it's a girl. However, due to severe, prolonged asphyxiation, she's in critical condition. We need a family member to sign the consent form immediately so we can rush her to the NICU!"

I couldn't wrap my head around the reason Dad had suddenly come to regret having Juliette. Back then, he said that as long as Juliette was alive, nothing else mattered; he never specified that she had to be healthy. I'd sacrificed myself so that Juliette could live. So, why was she met with his cold, contemptuous gaze, too? As it turned out, Mom and Dad only ever cared about money. Neither I nor Juliette ever truly mattered to them. …From that day on, Dad started staying away from home. On the rare occasions he did return, he reeked of alcohol. He would scowl the moment he laid eyes on Juliette and lash out at Mom. "Why did you let her sit here again? She drools so much; it's disgusting! Did she do her rehab? "... What's the point of doing it anyway? At the end of the day, she's still a vegetable! "I'm telling you, I've had enough! You're the one who gave birth to her, so you take care of her. I'm done with her!" He no longer held Juliette in his arms. The little girl he

Because of Juliette's arrival, Mom and Dad were genuinely happy for a long while. Day in and day out, I watched them surround her with a team of eight nannies, catering to her every single need. All kinds of nutritional supplements were provided like clockwork. Even her formula was imported from Vesperia, easily running over a grand per can. Juliette was raised in much the same way that I was. The sole difference was that when they looked at Juliette, their happiness came straight from the heart.…Unfortunately, time had a way of wearing out even the greatest joy. By the time she was old enough for kindergarten, Juliette had yet to learn to talk, let alone walk. Whenever she saw someone, she would just grin foolishly with drool running down her chin. Mom and Dad no longer dared to take her out in public. Juliette's third birthday wasn't marked by a lavish celebration, fireworks lighting up the night sky, or a house full of guests. If anything, there was only a cold, clinical

Juliette's first birthday celebration was scheduled on a bright and sunny day. Dad invited every single soul in his social circle. "You must come. If you don't, it means you look down on me." He personally called everyone. "Don't worry about gifts; just make sure you're there." He rented out the hotel's ballroom, placing a six-foot-tall portrait of Juliette right by the entrance. Scripted in gold at the bottom were the words, "My Beloved Daughter's First Birthday Celebration."Juliet, who was fast asleep, looked even more adorable than any regular baby. The guests filed in one after another, their faces plastered with smiles as they showered him with well wishes. Dad stood at the entrance to greet them, dressed in a sharp suit with a bright red boutonnière pinned to his chest, grinning ear to ear."Thomas, congratulations, old friend!" Dad led the guests toward their seats, bragging the entire way. "Take a look around. I reserved 30 tables with gourmet catering, vintage champa

Juliette's condition, however, was far from optimistic. "The baby's brain has suffered irreversible damage. It'll likely affect her cognitive development in the future."The doctor's words made Dad look as if the weight of the world had suddenly crushed him. Looking at Juliette, who was in the incubator, my heart ached for her.Dad practically begged the doctor, "Please save her. She's my only daughter. I don't care how much it costs!"Yet, I couldn't help but think... if it were me lying in there, he probably would have given up on me a long time ago, wouldn't he? I sighed, watching helplessly as Dad grabbed Mom by the collar. "This is all your fault, you crazy bitch!" The veins on his forehead bulged. "When the medical staff told you to push, you refused. When I told you to bring her into the world, you kept making a scene. Now, look at what you've done. My daughter's in NICU because of you!"Choking from his tight grip, Mom's face flushed crimson."Do you have any idea how

A brief silence fell over the corridor. Then, someone muttered under their breath, "Could she be suffering from postpartum depression?" "Still, postpartum depression doesn't make people this delusional; she's talking about her previous life and all…""Quick, call for a psychiatric consultation!"Dad finally snapped out of his elation. Noticing his wife in such a state, he looked a little embarrassed. "Calm down. Even the nurse said you gave birth to a girl. What else is there to doubt?"Mom stared straight at him. "Do you not believe me either? Don't you remember what happened in our previous life? That jinx killed our daughter!"Dad's expression shifted slightly. They'd had a poor-quality embryo during a previous pregnancy and were forced to abort it. If the one who survived in their previous life was their son, then this time... He lowered his head to look at Juliette. If the one who died in their past life was their daughter, who exactly was this girl who survived?"I don't

Mom stiffened, a mocking smile forming on her lips. "I see that you're lying to me again. Is it because you're afraid we won't pay for our son's treatment? Where's your director? I want to file a complaint!"The nurse panicked. "Please take a good look, ma'am! You really gave birth to a daughter!" Then, she parted Juliette's little legs to show Mom.Staring at the undeniable female anatomy, Mom was dumbstruck. At long last, she was about to realize she had given birth to Juliet. However, the very next second, Mom abruptly flipped, thrashing wildly on the hospital bed. "This is unbelievable! How dare you swap my baby? I clearly gave birth to a boy!"Juliette's condition was rapidly deteriorating. I circled anxiously in the sky. She was so small and frail; she wouldn't be able to hold on for much longer. Fortunately, the doctor stopped wasting his breath on Mom. After sweeping Juliette up into his arms, he rushed out to find Dad. "Who is here for Eleanor Leigh?"Sadly, the corr
