Chapter 3

Author: AAA Builder
Mom stormed in and yanked Margaret's arm away. Then, she shoved the rag farther into my mouth. "This brat must be up to no good again!"

She turned around and plastered a smile on her face. "Ma'am, she has a vicious tongue. Last time, she bit off one of a nurse's fingers. So, you'd better not touch her. We wouldn't want you to get hurt."

Margaret withdrew her hand and sized Mom up. "Is this how you city folks discipline your kids? By stuffing them in a pigpen?"

Mom's smile instantly stiffened.

Dad pulled two grand out of his pocket and stuffed it into Margaret's hands. "Here, ma'am. Please accept this."

He paused for a beat before adding, "We need you to hold her down while we draw some blood. If she struggles, pin her down as hard as you can."

Margaret glanced at the cash before shifting her gaze toward me. "Alright then." She stuffed the cash into her pocket, crouched, and pinned my shoulders down with both hands.

Mom pulled a syringe, a tourniquet, and a supply of empty blood collection tubes out of an insulated bag.

The nurse was called over from the car. She squeezed into the pigsty, deftly tied the tourniquet around my arm, and tapped the crook of my elbow. The needle went in. One tube, two tubes, three tubes.

Dad leaned against the fence, scrolling through his phone with the volume turned up. The phone was playing a video of his speech at a charity gala. "...As entrepreneurs, it is our responsibility to care for every vulnerable group..."

Thunderous applause erupted from the audience.

Four tubes, five tubes, six tubes. My lips were drained of all color.

The nurse felt my pulse and hesitated. "Mrs. Bramble, any more than this and she'll go into shock."

Mom didn't even look up. "She'll pull through. Patch up the needle mark when you're done. Don't get blood everywhere. It's disgusting."

As the nurse began filling a seventh tube, everything went dark, and my whole body went limp.

Margaret tightened her grip on my shoulders. I could feel her hands trembling.

Once the nurse was done, Mom placed the blood collection tubes back into the insulated bag one by one and zipped it shut.

Dad crouched down and patted my cheek. "There's another round tomorrow. If you behave, we'll only draw your blood once a month from now on. If you don't…" He didn't finish his threat, but the message was loud and clear.

The two of them packed up their things and left.

Margaret was the last to get to her feet. She stood beside the fence, looking down at me for a while before letting out a sigh. "Forgive me, young lady. I have more than a dozen kids in the village to feed. I really need the money."

She pulled half a roasted sweet potato out of her pocket and shoved it through the gap in the fence. "Eat a little if you can. Don't starve yourself." Then, she turned on her heel and left.

The pigsty fell utterly silent. Lying on the stone slab, I stared at the half piece of sweet potato wedged between the fence slats. Wisps of steam still rose from it.

When I was a child, Margaret would bake a whole batch of sweet potatoes every winter and give one to every kid in the village. I always got an extra half. She told me it was because I was the youngest, that I had to eat up if I wanted to grow taller.

After what felt like an eternity, I was certain the area was completely silent. I rolled over and pressed my back against the protruding edge of a stone in the corner. Then, I started sawing the rope against it.

The stone scraped my skin raw, and blood trickled down my wrists. I bit down on the rag and didn't make a sound.

I had no idea how long I'd kept at it when the rope finally snapped. I shook it off, turned sideways, and squeezed my way out beneath the pigsty fence.

The moon wasn't visible, and the village was pitch-black. However, I knew the way by heart.

Thomas' yard was just beyond that crooked tree. I dragged my feet forward, one step at a time.

I was almost at the courtyard when a sinister voice suddenly sounded behind me. "I knew you were only pretending to behave. Now, I'll show you what happens when you misbehave!"

Several months later, the court's ruling arrived in the village. All of the Bramble family's assets were frozen. Following the trial, I was awarded compensation to be paid from their assets. I took one look at the figures, folded the judgment, and tucked it under my pillow. Thomas asked me how I planned to spend it. I told him I would repair the village roads and build Margaret a bigger house. Her three children had to share a single bed, and the youngest kept rolling onto the floor. Thomas took a puff from his pipe. He neither agreed nor disagreed. "It's your money. You decide what to do with it." The news of Bramble Foundation's seizure made local headlines. Mom and Dad were escorted out of the courthouse on the screen. Both of them looked defeated, their handcuffs glinting under the camera lights. Reporters swarmed the entrance, yelling, "George! Do you have anything to say about the money laundering through your charity foundation?" Dad kept his head down and remained

Three police cruisers pulled up at the entrance of the village. As soon as the car doors flew open, a team of officers climbed out. The lead officer, Sam Steele, was in his 40s. His expression was stern as he scanned the scene. Chloe rushed forward, bursting into tears. She threw herself in front of Officer Steele. "Officer, these people kidnapped my parents! They locked them in a pigsty and beat them up! They even drew my mother's blood!" Chloe pointed at Caspian. "That man is a murderer! He just got out of prison! He beat my dad and broke all ten of his fingers!" Then, she pointed at Idris. "That man threatened us with a knife!" Next, she pointed at Thomas. "He's the village chief! He accepted my parents' money and locked my older sister up here to torture her!" The more she continued, the more agitated she became. Her voice became increasingly shrill. "Everyone in this village is evil—murderers, human traffickers, and violent criminals! Investigate them! Every single one

Three black vans pulled up at the entrance of the village. The doors slid open, and more than a dozen burly men climbed out. All of them were dressed in black T-shirts with tattoos covering their arms. The door of the last vehicle flew open, and Chloe was helped out. She wore a white dress, her hair hanging loose, and her face was as pale as a sheet. The moment she got out of the car, she burst into tears. "Dad! Mom! Where are you guys?" She clutched her mouth and sprinted into the village. However, after just a couple of steps, she was already out of breath. She bent over, resting her hands on her knees and coughing violently.Chloe was quite the actress. The burly men charged into the village. Idris stood in the middle of the road, wielding his butcher's knife, but three men grabbed his arms and forced him to the ground. The very next second, his knife was kicked away.Evelyn rushed forward to pull them off him, but she was shoved off balance and fell at the base of a wal

Idris hauled Dad off the ground and tossed him into the pigpen. Mom screamed and lunged after him, but Evelyn grabbed a fistful of her hair, yanked her back, and hurled her at the entrance to the pigpen. "Didn't you say this place suits her?" Evelyn pointed at the mud and manure on the ground. "Now, it suits you just fine."Mom thrashed wildly, kicking off one of her high heels in the process. "You can't do this to us! We're—"Margaret walked over with a scoop of slop. "Didn't you claim Quinn's life was worthless?"She crouched and grasped Mom's jaw. "Why don't you get a taste of what it's like to live a worthless life?" Mom clenched her jaw and refused to open her mouth. Margaret was in no rush either. She glanced over her shoulder at Idris. He approached them and pinched Mom's nose. Five seconds, ten seconds. Mom couldn't hold her breath any longer. The moment she opened her mouth to gasp for air, Margaret poured the pig feed down her throat. Mom retched so hard that sh

Caspian set me on the ground, crouched down, and wiped the mud off my face with the back of his hand. He looked at my swollen cheek, at all ten of my dislocated fingers, at the countless needle marks on my arms, and asked, "Who did this to you?" His jaw trembled. The old scar stretching from the corner of his mouth to his ear pulsed along with his clenched muscles. I parted my lips, but my throat was raw from the gag and his grip. All I could manage was a breathy whisper. "Outside... the door..." Caspian rose to his feet. He shoved the rag back into my mouth and murmured, "Don't make a sound." Then, he pulled open the door and leaned against the frame, his expression stoic. "This brat won't cooperate. Come in and help me hold her down." Dad was standing outside, grinning smugly at Mom. After hearing those words, his eyes lit up. "Alright, alright. I knew you were a man of action!"Dad crossed the threshold with a grin still plastered across his face. The moment he was inside

Dad yanked me up by the back of my collar, hauled me back to the pigsty, and hurled me to the ground. "How dare you fucking run again!" Mom charged over and planted her foot on my back, forcing my face into the muck.Thomas stood just a couple of paces away, leaning on his walking stick, watching coldly.Mom panted heavily before turning to him and forcing a smile. "Can you do us a favor and teach her a proper lesson, Thomas?"Before he could respond, the phone in her pocket rang. It was a video call from Chloe. Mom answered the call, and Chloe's face appeared on the screen. She was leaning against her headboard in a silk pajama set, a fruit platter beside her. "Mom, is that troublemaker acting up again?" "You bet she is! She took off a moment ago, but your father caught her."Chloe tilted her head and pouted. "There's no point in beating her up, Mom. People like her can't be beaten into submission. Besides, what if she escapes and calls the cops? You can't keep an eye on her
