Chapter 2

작가: Magnificence
"Now Cordelia has stolen my destiny and taken my place in the carriage. If the Crown Prince discovers this, it's treason.

"At best, Cordelia will lose her head. At worst, Father will be impeached for failing to manage his household properly. Even if you don't care about me, Mother, don't you care about Father's career and the lives of our entire family?"

My stepmother suddenly dropped to her knees, tears filling her eyes. "Genevieve, it was a moment of confusion on my part. Cordelia was so terrified of the peace marriage that she did this foolish thing. But the carriage has already left. If this becomes known, Cordelia will surely die.

"Genevieve, you were raised personally by the Dowager Countess, and you've always been so understanding. Your maternal family is of noble lineage. Even if this reaches His Majesty, there's room to negotiate.

"But if Cordelia is sent back, she'll face certain death. You've always been so generous. Why not say you had willingly given up your place to save your sister's life?"

Aunt Marguerite slapped her across the face. "A daughter of the Thorne family trampled by some concubine who used to wash feet. What do you mean willingly giving up her place?

"You and your daughter drugged her and stole her place! Now you want Genevieve to take the blame for treason? You disgust me! That lowborn wretch Cordelia thinks she can steal Genevieve's blessed destiny? The prophecy scroll belongs to Genevieve alone.

"Years ago you schemed your way into my brother's bed and killed Genevieve's mother. Now you're having your daughter steal her marriage too. Treason will cost you your heads. Do you think the Thorne family will stand for this?"

My stepmother covered her face and laughed coldly. "How impressive you are, Marguerite! Before Edmund left for the south, he entrusted all household affairs to me. The marriages of both girls are naturally mine to arrange.

"No matter how prestigious the Thorne family is, a married daughter is like an outsider. You're a Hartwell now. Aren't you afraid of being laughed at for meddling in Thorne family affairs?"

I gazed into my stepmother's eyes and asked, "Where is my prophecy scroll? The Royal Observatory made it for me using my birth date and time."

Her eyes flickered. "What's yours and mine? You're both Thorne daughters in the end. Your sister has a gentle nature. What's wrong with you as the elder sister letting her have this?"

In my previous life, it was the same. Cordelia took my prophecy scroll and replaced me, then seized all the dowry my mother left behind.

My stepmother calculated correctly that I would not dare make a scene and demand it back in public.

What belonged to me, I would take back this time. And I would make them pay a hundredfold.

Aunt Marguerite trembled with rage. "Outrageous! The prophecy scroll was issued by the Royal Observatory based on Genevieve's birth date. It foretold her blessed fate. Stealing and switching it will bring divine retribution!

"If you and your daughter had a death wish, you shouldn't have dragged the entire Thorne family down with you! Did you embezzle my sister-in-law's dowry as well? Whether you believe me or not, I was about to summon the family council and invoke our laws against you, you black-hearted wretch!"

I pressed down on Aunt Marguerite's hand and turned to ask the matchmaker. "Is the wedding envoy still outside the manor?"

The matchmaker had been hiding behind the door gossiping with the maids. When I asked, she quickly nodded. "Yes, they're still there."

I straightened my clothes. "Go invite the envoy inside. Tell him I have an urgent matter to discuss."

The envoy entered through the curtain. He was strikingly handsome with a scar slashing across his brow into his temple. His amber eyes were like those of a wolf on the plains.

I met him from behind the screen and told him everything directly, then asked, "My half-sister has already taken my place and married the Crown Prince. I'm willing to fulfill the peace alliance. Does the King's promise still stand?"

A trace of surprise flickered in his eyes. He said, "The sons of the northern plains never care about such things. It's only unfortunate for you, Miss. If you're willing to board the carriage, my father the King will treat you like a proper consort."

"That's good then."

I removed the pendant from my waist and handed it to him. "However, before we depart, I need Your Highness to help me with something."

In the palace's great hall, the Crown Prince and Cordelia had just exchanged their vows. The Master of Ceremonies was about to announce the completion of the rites.

Suddenly someone interrupted. "Wait!"

Aunt Marguerite and I appeared at the hall entrance. The joyful music throughout the hall came to an abrupt halt.

The Crown Prince's hand froze mid-air as he was lifting the bride's veil. The assembled court officials gasped when they saw me.

The carriage began to move. The long wedding procession slowly passed through the city gates. I lifted the curtain and took one last look at the capital. The road ahead was uncertain. The Northern Plains royal court would hardly be an easy path. The envoy suddenly appeared before me. Today he wore formal Northern Plains ceremonial robes that made him look even more commanding. His voice was low, carrying a hint of concern that was barely perceptible. "Does it pain you to leave?"I took a deep breath and answered honestly. "A little. But Your Highness, I'd like to know what kind of person the King is?"I had asked this question obliquely several times during the journey, always wanting to learn more.He fell silent for a moment. His amber eyes looked deeply into mine, as if trying to see into my heart."Princess, you need not worry. I will protect you and keep you safe."Not the perfunctory "the King is wise and just," but "I will keep you safe."I froze, feeling a familiar flu

The Crown Prince's bedchambers had its doors and windows tightly shut. The air felt suffocating and dead.Cordelia was still shaken, tears streaming down her face. "I was so frightened. Those jailers...""Draw the bow."Cordelia froze. "Your Highness?"The Crown Prince stared at her, his voice ice cold. "I said draw the bow."Cordelia did not understand why, but she took the bow and tried to pull it. She could not even move the string. She forced a smile. "Your Highness, I don't have the strength for this sort of thing..."The Crown Prince suddenly grabbed her wrist so hard that he nearly crushed her bones. "Draw it again!"Cordelia's eyes were filled with tears from the pain. She said, panicked, "Your Highness, you're hurting me."The Crown Prince acted like a madman, forcing her to draw the bow over and over until Cordelia completely broke down. She threw the bow aside and cried out, "I won't do it anymore! What are you trying to do?"The Crown Prince stared at her intently

"If Genevieve hadn't volunteered to take on the peace marriage and appeased His Majesty's fury, and if she hadn't earned the title Princess Aurelia to preserve the Thorne family's honor, you and I, along with everyone in this household, would already be on our way to the grave!"My stepmother's legs gave out and she nearly collapsed to the ground. "My lord, what are you saying? What princess? Cordelia, Cordelia she..."She suddenly fell silent, her pupils dilating, seemingly on the verge of insanity. The last of her strength drained away.Father said coldly, "Lock her in the prayer room. When Cordelia's sentence is handed down, they'll be dealt with together."Father wearily rubbed his temples. When he turned to me, his expression softened instantly. "Genevieve, I arrived too late."My nose stung with emotion. In my previous life, I died without ever hearing Father say these words. He looked at me with complicated emotions on his face. "The Northern Plains are harsh and cold. Th

"Absolutely not!" Aunt Marguerite said urgently. "Genevieve was just drugged. Her body hasn't recovered. She needs at least half a month to recuperate."The envoy considered the matter for a moment. "Then we depart in ten days."The shocking events at the palace had not yet reached Thorne manor. My stepmother stood in the courtyard, wild with joy at the sight of hundreds of additional dowry chests. Her voice rose, shrill and piercing, as if afraid others might not hear. "This must be a gift from His Majesty! Now that Cordelia has married the Crown Prince, he'll treat her well. The palace must know that Cordelia is pregnant and sent these extra gifts to honor her. Cordelia's luck is just beginning!"My head maid Iris directed the palace servants, who were carefully carrying an ornate rosewood chest inlaid with jewels, toward my courtyard."Stop!" My stepmother shouted sharply and rushed over to block their path."Are you blind, you fools? Where are you taking those? These are gif

When the Crown Prince heard this, a flash of satisfaction appeared in his eyes. "Genevieve Thorne, what does it matter if you were born with a blessed fate? No one wants you anyway!"The envoy's expression changed abruptly. He turned and whispered to an attendant beside him.The attendant hurried out of the hall and quickly returned with a black-robed shaman. The shaman stared at the unconscious Cordelia for a moment, then suddenly erupted in fury. "By the King! Valoria intended to send us a woman cursed with an ominous fate for the peace marriage?! Are you trying to curse the Northern Plains royal court?"The Emperor's expression darkened. "Envoy, please calm yourself. This woman's cursed fate was only discovered today. I have already ordered her imprisonment. I have absolutely no intention of damaging relations between our nations."The envoy snorted coldly. "In that case, Your Majesty must designate a new noble lady for the peace marriage."I stepped forward again. "I am willi

Cordelia bit her lip and let her blood fall under everyone's watchful eyes. The prophecy scroll glowed faintly red.The Crown Prince was overjoyed. "See! I told you..."Before he could finish, dark clouds suddenly gathered overhead, and the hall plunged into shadow. The scroll burst into black flames with a roar. The Director of the Royal Observatory cried out in horror, "An ominous fate has manifested! This is a terrible omen!""Ah! My stomach!"Cordelia suddenly screamed and collapsed to the ground. Dark blood spread across her skirt. She had lost the baby."You're spouting nonsense! Spreading lies!"The Crown Prince's eyes bulged with rage. He rushed forward to snatch the scroll emanating black smoke, but the cold dark energy forced him back repeatedly."It's fake, all fake. Someone is framing her. Yes! Someone must be framing Cordelia! She's so kind. How could she carry an ominous fate? She's my Crown Princess!"He threw himself at the Emperor's feet. "Father, you must be
