Chapter 3

작가: Magnificence
"Why is Ms. Genevieve Thorne over there?"

"Then who is the bride?"

The Emperor's face darkened like storm clouds. "Genevieve Thorne, why are you here? What is the meaning of this?"

Cordelia cowered behind the Crown Prince. Her veil slipped off, revealing a tear-streaked face. "Your Highness..."

The Crown Prince instinctively shielded her behind him, his brow furrowed deeply.

I knelt on the ground, my voice choked with emotion. "Your Majesty, I came to complete my wedding. Last night I drank the farewell toast my stepmother specially prepared. Somehow, I fell into a deep sleep.

"When I woke this morning, my wedding dress, jewelry, and even the bridal carriage were all gone. I was afraid of missing the wedding, so I hastily changed into my spare wedding dress and rushed here."

The Emperor's gaze was sharp as a blade as he turned to the Crown Prince. "Crown Prince, when you received the bride, did you notice anything unusual?"

The Crown Prince's body stiffened. He forced himself to appear calm. "Father, when I saw the woman in the carriage holding the prophecy scroll, everything seemed in order. I received her according to proper ceremony and did not lift the veil to look closely."

I raised my head with a look of alarm. "The prophecy scroll? When I woke up, the box my stepmother gave me with the scroll was also missing."

The Emperor's gaze lingered for a moment on the Crown Prince's hand protecting my half-sister. His expression turned suddenly cold.

Cordelia dropped to her knees with a thud, tears brimming in her eyes. "Last night Genevieve kept saying she didn't want to marry into the palace. She drank herself into a stupor and this morning I couldn't wake her no matter what I tried.

"The Crown Prince's carriage had already arrived at our gate. I had no choice but to board it myself."

She looked innocent and naive. I appeared even more confused. "Cordelia, don't you have it backwards? Last night it was you clinging to Mother and crying that you refused the peace marriage. You insisted on staying in my room to sleep.

"Now that I think about it, was it so you could conveniently steal my wedding dress and prophecy scroll?"

Cordelia's face turned deathly pale. "How can you wrongly accuse me like this, Genevieve! I only wanted to wait until later to switch our identities back so I could protect your reputation.

"It's all my fault. You can beat me or punish me however you like, but please don't say I stole anything."

The Crown Prince immediately pulled her into his embrace and looked at me coldly. "Ms. Genevieve, since you were unwilling to marry me, why come here now to make a scene? Cordelia rescued you from an awkward situation. Instead of being grateful, you slander her?

"I only recognize Cordelia as my wife today. Since we have exchanged vows, this is heaven's will."

I watched them quietly.

In my previous life, they did the same thing. One played the victim while the other played the protector. They pinned the crime of defying the decree on me as if it were nothing, making themselves look devoted and righteous.

In my last life, they made me the villain while they played the heroes. They built their happiness on my grave.

I sighed softly, my voice soaked with helplessness. "Genevieve, are you truly thinking only of me?"

Cordelia lifted her tear-filled eyes, looking pitiful and wronged. "What are you saying, Genevieve? We share the same blood. How could I possibly stand by and watch you marry someone you don't love and suffer for the rest of your life?

"The Crown Prince is magnificent and noble, the man every woman in the realm dreams of. I simply didn't want to disappoint His Highness or bring shame to the royal family. Can't you understand my intentions?"

The Crown Prince's heart softened as she gazed at him. His arm around her tightened and his eyes grew colder and more disgusted as he looked at me.

People in the hall whispered among themselves. The looks they cast my way were full of scrutiny and contempt, as if confirming my crimes of being "ungrateful" and "having another lover."

I slowly withdrew a palm-sized rosewood box from my sleeve. "Perhaps I did misunderstand you, Cordelia. But..."

The box opened with a click. I plucked out a letter from inside.

When I read aloud its contents, everyone in the great hall was shocked.

  • Swapped at the Altar   Chapter 11

The carriage began to move. The long wedding procession slowly passed through the city gates. I lifted the curtain and took one last look at the capital. The road ahead was uncertain. The Northern Plains royal court would hardly be an easy path. The envoy suddenly appeared before me. Today he wore formal Northern Plains ceremonial robes that made him look even more commanding. His voice was low, carrying a hint of concern that was barely perceptible. "Does it pain you to leave?"I took a deep breath and answered honestly. "A little. But Your Highness, I'd like to know what kind of person the King is?"I had asked this question obliquely several times during the journey, always wanting to learn more.He fell silent for a moment. His amber eyes looked deeply into mine, as if trying to see into my heart."Princess, you need not worry. I will protect you and keep you safe."Not the perfunctory "the King is wise and just," but "I will keep you safe."I froze, feeling a familiar flu

The Crown Prince's bedchambers had its doors and windows tightly shut. The air felt suffocating and dead.Cordelia was still shaken, tears streaming down her face. "I was so frightened. Those jailers...""Draw the bow."Cordelia froze. "Your Highness?"The Crown Prince stared at her, his voice ice cold. "I said draw the bow."Cordelia did not understand why, but she took the bow and tried to pull it. She could not even move the string. She forced a smile. "Your Highness, I don't have the strength for this sort of thing..."The Crown Prince suddenly grabbed her wrist so hard that he nearly crushed her bones. "Draw it again!"Cordelia's eyes were filled with tears from the pain. She said, panicked, "Your Highness, you're hurting me."The Crown Prince acted like a madman, forcing her to draw the bow over and over until Cordelia completely broke down. She threw the bow aside and cried out, "I won't do it anymore! What are you trying to do?"The Crown Prince stared at her intently

  • Swapped at the Altar   Chapter 9

"If Genevieve hadn't volunteered to take on the peace marriage and appeased His Majesty's fury, and if she hadn't earned the title Princess Aurelia to preserve the Thorne family's honor, you and I, along with everyone in this household, would already be on our way to the grave!"My stepmother's legs gave out and she nearly collapsed to the ground. "My lord, what are you saying? What princess? Cordelia, Cordelia she..."She suddenly fell silent, her pupils dilating, seemingly on the verge of insanity. The last of her strength drained away.Father said coldly, "Lock her in the prayer room. When Cordelia's sentence is handed down, they'll be dealt with together."Father wearily rubbed his temples. When he turned to me, his expression softened instantly. "Genevieve, I arrived too late."My nose stung with emotion. In my previous life, I died without ever hearing Father say these words. He looked at me with complicated emotions on his face. "The Northern Plains are harsh and cold. Th

"Absolutely not!" Aunt Marguerite said urgently. "Genevieve was just drugged. Her body hasn't recovered. She needs at least half a month to recuperate."The envoy considered the matter for a moment. "Then we depart in ten days."The shocking events at the palace had not yet reached Thorne manor. My stepmother stood in the courtyard, wild with joy at the sight of hundreds of additional dowry chests. Her voice rose, shrill and piercing, as if afraid others might not hear. "This must be a gift from His Majesty! Now that Cordelia has married the Crown Prince, he'll treat her well. The palace must know that Cordelia is pregnant and sent these extra gifts to honor her. Cordelia's luck is just beginning!"My head maid Iris directed the palace servants, who were carefully carrying an ornate rosewood chest inlaid with jewels, toward my courtyard."Stop!" My stepmother shouted sharply and rushed over to block their path."Are you blind, you fools? Where are you taking those? These are gif

When the Crown Prince heard this, a flash of satisfaction appeared in his eyes. "Genevieve Thorne, what does it matter if you were born with a blessed fate? No one wants you anyway!"The envoy's expression changed abruptly. He turned and whispered to an attendant beside him.The attendant hurried out of the hall and quickly returned with a black-robed shaman. The shaman stared at the unconscious Cordelia for a moment, then suddenly erupted in fury. "By the King! Valoria intended to send us a woman cursed with an ominous fate for the peace marriage?! Are you trying to curse the Northern Plains royal court?"The Emperor's expression darkened. "Envoy, please calm yourself. This woman's cursed fate was only discovered today. I have already ordered her imprisonment. I have absolutely no intention of damaging relations between our nations."The envoy snorted coldly. "In that case, Your Majesty must designate a new noble lady for the peace marriage."I stepped forward again. "I am willi

Cordelia bit her lip and let her blood fall under everyone's watchful eyes. The prophecy scroll glowed faintly red.The Crown Prince was overjoyed. "See! I told you..."Before he could finish, dark clouds suddenly gathered overhead, and the hall plunged into shadow. The scroll burst into black flames with a roar. The Director of the Royal Observatory cried out in horror, "An ominous fate has manifested! This is a terrible omen!""Ah! My stomach!"Cordelia suddenly screamed and collapsed to the ground. Dark blood spread across her skirt. She had lost the baby."You're spouting nonsense! Spreading lies!"The Crown Prince's eyes bulged with rage. He rushed forward to snatch the scroll emanating black smoke, but the cold dark energy forced him back repeatedly."It's fake, all fake. Someone is framing her. Yes! Someone must be framing Cordelia! She's so kind. How could she carry an ominous fate? She's my Crown Princess!"He threw himself at the Emperor's feet. "Father, you must be
