Chapter 3

Autor: Greenie
When I opened my eyes again, I realized I was already dead. My soul, for some reason, was bound to Kellan.

I floated in the air and watched as Kellan and Lia, both dressed in lavish formal wear, walked toward the altar. However, unlike the excited Lia, Kellan looked somewhat distracted.

The moment the offering ceremony ended, he impatiently slipped away from the crowd and pulled out his phone.

"Kellan," Lia called out to him as she walked over and grabbed his arm. "Don't blame Ella. I think she's hiding because she's too afraid to face you. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have sent you that video of her throwing up from morning sickness."

The moment Kellan heard the words "morning sickness", his eyes seemed to blaze with fury. But still, he gently patted the back of Lia's hand. "This isn't your fault. If it weren't for you, I'd still be kept in the dark!"

With that, he unlocked his phone and dialed my number again. But of course, the call went unanswered. After all, a dead person couldn't pick up the phone.

Frustrated, he hung up the call and immediately texted me. "Ella, why aren't you answering my calls? Don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

Just then, Mom walked over. Clearly, Lia had also told her about my supposed pregnancy, so she apologized to Kellan.

"It's my fault for not disciplining Ella properly. Had I known about this, I would have just left her in the wilderness. But don't worry, Kellan. Once we find her, I'll teach her a harsh lesson. And if that doesn't work, we'll just exile her again!"

My father, Jacob Smith, had passed away early. Although I had long grown used to my mother favoring Lia, hearing her say such heartless words still sent a pang through me.

It was bad enough that she hadn't checked on me once during the past year, but I never imagined she would talk about exiling me again without even verifying the situation.

Kellan frowned at Mom's words. He irritably grabbed a glass of red wine, downed it in one go, then reached for the bottle to pour another.

Mom quickly stopped him. "Stop drinking, Kellan. Ella isn't the only daughter in the Smith family. Didn't you hear how everyone in the pack was saying just now that you and Lia are a perfect match?"

Kellan's hand paused on the wine bottle, and he slowly turned his gaze toward Lia.

Lia eagerly met his gaze, gushing with anticipation. "Kellan, whatever Ella owes you, I'm willing to repay it for her. I swear I'll love you with all my heart and will never betray you the way Ella did!"

Kellan stared at her in silence for several minutes. Then, he set down the wine bottle, picked up his phone, and glanced at it again. There was still no reply to the message he had sent.

He suddenly let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh. "No wonder she said those things before. No wonder she wouldn't let me visit her in the wilderness all year! So it turns out she was hiding such a huge secret!"

Floating in the air, I burned with rage at his words. They were the ones who had left me to fend for myself, and now they were twisting the truth and blaming me?

I hurled myself at him in rage. But the next second, I passed straight through him without so much as ruffling a strand of his hair.

Kellan pulled out a set of keys and handed them to Lia. "Here are the keys to my house. You can move in anytime. Also, you can decide on when you want to hold the marking ceremony."

Lia had clearly not expected Kellan to agree so readily. Her voice trembled with excitement as she asked, "R-really? Kellan, are you serious?"

Kellan did not answer her. Instead, he sent me another message.

"Ella, it seems you really did betray the vows we made back then. In that case, I'll have the Beta give you some money as a form of compensation. From now on, we're square!"

A few days later, one of Kellan's subordinates, Seth Johnson, reported back to Kellan with the information he had gathered."Ms. Smith had everything robbed from her on her very first day in the wilderness. She barely survived by scavenging whatever the vultures left behind."Apparently, she called out your name under the moonlight every night, disturbing others, so she was often driven away or bitten until she was covered in wounds."I also found out that three months ago, Ms. Smith tried to cross the border to come back, but…"Seth glanced cautiously at Kellan, who was seated on the chair. Seeing Kellan's expression grow darker and darker, Seth lowered his voice."But the border guards drove her away. I heard they were quite heavy-handed and even threw her to a pack of feral dogs in the end."No sooner had he finished than a crack was heard. The armrest of the chair had snapped under Kellan's grip.Seth flinched and quickly asked, "Alpha, should I go and bring those guards her

A crisp, loud slap landed hard on Lia's face.Mom shook with rage as she said, "I've done so much for you, and yet you blame me?"Lia, who had probably never been hit in her life, stood stunned for a few seconds before bursting into hysterical sobs. She shoved Mom away as she cried, "You don't deserve to be my mother! I want nothing to do with you! Get out! Leave right now! I never want to see you again—"Mom kept backing up until suddenly, her foot met empty air. With a loud splash, she fell straight into the old well in the courtyard. That well had been dug by my grandfather's forefathers and had stood in the courtyard for centuries.I remembered how Dad had always warned me to stay far away from it back when I was a pup. The well was narrow and deep, so if anyone ever fell in, it was almost impossible to climb back out.Years ago, there used to be a railing around it. But now, there was no protection at all.I floated over quickly, but all I saw were ripples spreading across

"You bitch!" Kellan roared, his hand closing around Mom's throat.Mom's face instantly twisted in agony from the lack of air. She kicked and clawed at Kellan, making broken, strangled sounds.Seeing her struggle, I instinctively wanted to stop him. After all, she had given me life. I couldn't bear to watch her being strangled to death right in front of me.But I was only a ghost. I passed through Kellan's body once again, powerless to do anything else.Just as Mom was on the verge of her last breath, a firefly that had been hovering around me landed on the back of Kellan's hand.It seemed to jolt him back to his senses, and he abruptly loosened his grip.Mom slid to the floor, coughing violently. While gasping for air, she cursed furiously, "I knew you wouldn't dare to kill me, you coward! You let someone else take the blame for you because you were too cowardly back then too! You're the one who got Ella killed. You're the real murderer!"Kellan ignored her and walked toward my

A sharp scream snapped me out of my memories.Lia suddenly shoved Mom to the ground in a frenzy, then ran back to Kellan. She begged desperately, "Kellan, whatever Mom did has nothing to do with me. I'm innocent. Please don't hate me, okay?"But Kellan did not even acknowledge her. He stepped forward, grabbed Mom by the collar, and hauled her to her feet. "So you killed Mr. Smith and Ella because of your filthy affair with your brother?""Jacob brought it on himself!" Mom retorted, meeting Kellan's gaze without a trace of fear. "He overestimated himself and challenged Jason to a duel, and that was what led to him falling off the cliff and dying!"Then, a twisted smile crept across Mom's face. "As for Ella, wasn't that all your fault?"Kellan stiffened. "What do you mean by that?""What do I mean?" she scoffed. "Had Ella not taken your place and suffered in the wilderness for a whole year, you'd be the one who's dead now!"She pointed at Granny, who was lying not too far off, and

Mom sneakily tried to take the diary away, but Kellan was one step ahead and gripped it firmly in his hand.Mom was clearly panicking. Her face turned deathly pale as she said, "Give it to me! That was my husband's belongings. I should be the one to keep it. You have no right to read someone else's private matters!"Kellan stared at her with a complicated look in his eyes. After a few seconds, he finally spoke. "Mrs. Smith, I'm giving you a chance to come clean. Tell me, did you kill Ella? If you won't speak, I'll take this diary and call for a meeting with the Elders. We can just let everyone judge for themselves.""No! Please, don't!" Mom quickly cried out. "Ella's death has nothing to do with me. Why would I kill my own daughter? It wasn't me! I swear!""Stop wasting your breath on her," Granny huffed angrily. "Just call the meeting and expose their ugly incestuous affair to the whole pack!"Kellan made a gesture for Granny to stay quiet, then stepped forward slowly, backing

Kellan stood frozen in place, as if all the strength had been drained from his body.He stared at me on the stretcher, his eyes filled with shock and disbelief. It took him a long while before he finally managed to force out a hoarse whisper. "Impossible... This is impossible..."After a long pause, he seemed to snap out of his stupor. He whipped around and roared at Lia behind him, "Didn't you say she was hiding because she got pregnant? Then what the hell is this? What is going on?"Lia flinched in terror and stumbled back several steps, clutching onto Mom. "Y-yes… You saw the video yourself, didn't you? How was I supposed to know that she…"Before she could finish, a frantic, stumbling rush of footsteps sounded outside the door. The next second, my grandmother, Felicity Hale, came crashing through the entrance. The moment she saw me lying on the stretcher, she seemed to crumble. She threw herself down on her knees beside me, covered her face, and burst into heart-wrenching sobs
