Chapter 2

작가: Grogan
Luciano and Sofia's wedding was next week.

I stared at the photo Sofia had sent me. The faint scar on Luciano's jaw was a stark reminder that this was real.

Years ago, when I was 20, I used to work part-time at a bar. Unfortunately, I just so happened to be working the day a gunfight broke out between the Carlotta family and an enemy family. Despite being innocent, I was caught in the crossfire.

Luciano, the Don's son, had clearly already escaped, yet when a bullet was fired in my direction, he spun around and tackled me. The bullet grazed his jaw as we crashed to the ground, and that was it. It was love at first sight.

Nonetheless, despite dating for three years, I was still unable to become his lawfully wedded wife.

Back then, he would always sigh while comforting me, "Amore, even now, I still can't let others know of your existence, nor can I publicly announce our relationship. Three years. Please wait for me for another three years. Once I become the Don, I'll throw you a grand wedding."

I could only nod silently.

Seeing that, he would pull me into his arms with a heartbroken look on his face.

"Rosanna, I know this isn't fair to you. However, my family keeps pushing for me to marry a Donna whose status equals mine, and I still don't have enough power to go against them. If they were to find out about you, you would disappear from this world the very next day.

"I just can't bear the thought of losing you, so please understand and give me three more years. Or maybe, we could have a baby. That way, no matter if I become the Don or not in the future, you and I will still always be tied together."

Taking in his earnest expression, I had believed him then.

The day I went into labor, I hemorrhaged terribly due to a difficult birth. Even after the surgery was over, he failed to show up.

Three days later, he finally appeared. Grasping my pallid hand with an expression of heartache, he had explained, "Rosanna, I know that you've suffered, but if someone were to photograph me appearing in the hospital, not only you, but even Mario, our son, would be exposed.

"Mario will definitely be the Carlotta family's heir. However, until I marry you, I can't let him bear the stigma of being an illegitimate bastard. One day, we'll be able to live together as a family, openly and properly."

It wasn't until I received Sofia's news tonight that I was forced to face reality—Luciano had chosen someone else.

After ending the call with Sofia, I remained in the living room, sitting there in the dark for a very long time.

Eventually, Luciano returned and spotted my puffy and red eyes.

"Amore, what happened? Come now, tell me! I can help you handle whatever it is!"

Taking in the panicked and worried expression on his face, I couldn't help but look him straight in the eyes.

"Luciano, it's been six years already. Are we really going to marry?"

"O-Of course!"

Despite his words, the way his eyes darted away shiftily was all the answer I needed.

"Amore, didn't we already agree on this a long time ago? Why would you suddenly ask me that question? Has something happened?"

He nervously searched my face, trying to figure out the reason for my question.

I lowered my gaze and, forcing the bitter laugh that welled in my throat down, answered softly, "I'm just… feeling a little down. Perhaps it's loneliness from not seeing Mario in so long."

Upon hearing this, Luciano breathed a sigh of relief before pressing an adoring kiss to my forehead. "It's all my fault. I've been so busy lately that I've neglected you. How about I take you overseas for a holiday in a few days? If you miss our son so much, we can bring him too."

Then, as though he had remembered something, he hastily added, "But the vacation will have to wait till after next week. I have an arms deal to negotiate and will have to leave for a few days. Once I return, I'll spend time with you and Mario."

I was well aware that the "arms deal" he spoke of was none other than the wedding I had been dreaming of for years.

Nevertheless, I responded in my usual manner, smiling as I said, "Okay, I'll be waiting."

Once the relieved Luciano had turned to head into the bathroom, I took out my phone and booked a flight for the day of their wedding.

I had barely completed my booking when a pair of arms suddenly snaked around me from behind, pulling me back into a damp and warm embrace.

Luciano pressed his bare chest into me as he murmured seductively, "Hmm? Are you booking plane tickets? To where?"

Astonished, Luciano snatched Sofia's phone from her to stare at the photo. In it, I was smiling, wide and bright.Sofia was momentarily silent before she started to mutter, "No wonder she was so quiet when I sent her a photo of you and told her that we were getting married. In fact, she even asked if I was truly marrying you. It also explains why she refused when I told her to come to our wedding with her boyfriend!" Luciano was quick to realize the implication behind her words, and his complexion turned pale as he became rooted to the spot."So, she knew from the start that I was getting married. That's why she made plans to take Mario with her when she left me."However, in the process of running from him, they were caught in a plane crash. What should he do? What was he supposed to do now that he had lost both me and our child?"You bastard! Turns out that you're that scumbag boyfriend of hers!" An enraged Sofia slapped Luciano across the cheek harshly. As tears spilled d

Sofia's eyes widened in shock before she demanded, "Luciano Carlotta, are you crazy? What nonsense are you spouting?"Luciano smiled, though it was more of a grimace than an expression of happiness. "Of course, it's because she's gone! I used to have this wonderful girlfriend, and she even gave birth to a son for me. "However, the family needs a woman with a matching status to mine to be the Donna. That's the only reason I agreed to enter a marriage alliance with your family. In truth, I don't love you at all."Now, my amore is gone. I lost her, pushed her out of my life with my own hands. Only now do I realize that I can't live without her. I have to find her and get her back."Rendered speechless by his words, Sofia finally said after a moment, "Are you saying that you had a girlfriend who you've been in love with for many years? And that you two have a child together already?""Yes. I thought I could keep both of you in the dark about each other and live on like usual, but I'v

Just as Luciano was lost in his spiraling thoughts, his phone lit up with a message from Sofia. She was asking if he had finished with his work matters and whether he was getting ready to return home.A never-before-felt wave of frustration surged through him.He subconsciously tapped into his chat window with me, which showed that the last message was still the one he had sent over a week ago. With red-rimmed eyes, he sent me a message that read, "Where are you?"In the next second, he discovered that I had blocked his number. That realization had his heart clenching in pain, as though a hand was gripping it tightly. In all the years that we had been together, I had never once ignored him or not replied to any of his messages. Thus, there was no way I had blocked him, right? He began relentlessly calling me. Thankfully, I hadn't completely blocked his number, but only just on the messaging app.The phone rang for who knew how long before someone finally picked up.Overjoyed, L

Stunned, Luciano stood rooted to the spot, feeling as though he had been struck by lightning."That's impossible! Why would Rosanna just take Mario away without asking me first?"Without a moment's hesitation, he grabbed his car key and charged out the front door."There's no way this is real." His hands were trembling slightly as he gripped the steering wheel, the veins on the back of his palms bulging.I loved him so much and had been a constant shadow by his side all these years, much like a docile kitten following its owner around at home. Why would I have left him without a word, and with our son too?Unless I had learned that he was marrying another woman…That thought instantly caused cold sweat to break out all over his body."Impossible! There's no way she found out!"He kept muttering to himself in an attempt to convince himself, "I blocked all the media from reporting on the wedding and made sure she had no access to any information about it. Besides that, the house

Stunned, Luciano stood frozen to the spot. Several seconds later, he asked in a shaking voice filled with disbelief, "Missing? What do you mean he's missing?"Gabriella shuddered in fear, her panic causing her to fumble over her words. "H-He actually went missing over a week ago. However, Mrs. Carlotta Senior said that your wedding was the most important thing at the time, so you couldn't afford to be distracted. That's why she had us all keep it from you.""What did you say? He went missing a week ago? How could you all do this to me? He's my son, my biological child!" Luciano bellowed at Gabriella.Immediately after that, all the blood seemed to freeze in his veins, causing him to stumble back and almost fall to the ground.Fortunately, he was steadied by his mother, Isabella De Luca, who frowned at him."What's with the ruckus? It's just a bastard child. You don't even know if he really is your biological son!" Scrunching her nose in disgust, she went on scornfully, "Even if he

Overjoyed, Sofia pressed a kiss to Luciano's cheek. In contrast to her, Luciano felt nothing but a yawning emptiness inside him. After the ceremony was over, the newlyweds began accepting toasts and blessings from their guests.Luciano accepted them all with a smile, yet as he tossed his head back to gulp down his wine, he couldn't stop the surge of frustration welling in him.In the past, I would always drag him into discussions as I fantasized about what our married life would be like, and now, all those same moments I had described were exactly what these guests were wishing him and Sofia.Yet, when he heard their well-wishes, he was suddenly reminded of the expectant look on my face back then. His heart inexplicably clenched in pain."Luci, are you daydreaming again?" Sofia tugged on Luciano once more.It was only then that he was yanked out of his drifting thoughts. He shot her a forced smile. As the future Don of the Carlotta family, it was unbecoming of him to be so unaw
