Chapter 4

Autor: Pretty Handsome
Patrick looked surprised.

"You really have no objections? You're not angry?" he asked.

"Not at all," I replied. "No one wants their own child to be called a bastard."

He nodded in relief. "I'm glad you can see reason. We can still have the wedding ceremony. In everyone else's eyes, you and I will still be husband and wife. It doesn't matter whose name is on the marriage certificate."

I nodded without saying a word.

Patrick continued, "There's one more thing. Raising a child is incredibly demanding these days, and I'm already exhausted just taking care of Douglas. So, after we get married, let's not have any children of our own.

"Instead, you'll raise Douglas as if he were your own son. He's smart and has great potential. We'll leave all our assets to him, and I'm sure he'll take care of you when you're old."

Without the slightest hesitation, I nodded and said, "Okay."

Patrick paused, his brows drawing together slightly as a flicker of unease crossed his eyes.

"Why are you being so understanding all of a sudden?"

I smiled. "We're about to get married—what's the point of quibbling over every little thing?"

He visibly relaxed. "I thought you were sulking. I'm glad you've come around. After all, you're already going to have me. You should be content with that. Honey, I really do love you.

"Seeing you be so understanding makes my heart ache for you. I promise we'll settle down and live a peaceful life together from now on. Even though Lana and I have a child together, I won't let her and Douglas interfere with our life."

As soon as he finished speaking, his phone rang. He answered it, and a child's sobs could be faintly heard from the other end, along with a plaintive little cry.

"Daddy…"

After hanging up, Patrick gave me a strained look.

"Douglas misses me. I need to see him. He's still so young and needs me by his side. You won't mind, right?"

"Go ahead," I said.

And with that, he left.

After the door closed, I sat down on the couch and received two messages from Lana.

"You're a pathetic loser who can't even get a marriage certificate or a child. Do you really think Patrick will marry you? He's just keeping you around as an ATM to support Douglas and me!

"But don't worry, I know you'll happily get on your knees and take care of us. Be a good, loyal dog and keep working hard, okay? You'll need to support us when we have our second baby."

I didn't delete the messages or reply. Instead, I took screenshots and saved the conversation.

Patrick hadn't come home for three days. I hadn't contacted him either, as I'd been busy meeting with Bradley.

Bradley was even more handsome in person than in his photos, and he had a warm, genuine smile.

On the morning of the third day, Bradley and I went to the city hall to register our marriage. After we left, he went to a nearby print shop to make copies of some documents.

I waited for him outside, the marriage certificate we'd just obtained tucked inside my bag.

Just then, a black sedan pulled up to the curb, and Patrick and Lana stepped out.

The moment Patrick spotted me, his expression changed.

"Agnes, didn't you promise me you wouldn't cause a scene? Why did you follow us all the way here?"

Lana stepped forward and positioned herself in front of me. Then, she deliberately said in a raised voice, "Agnes, just how shameless can you be? Patrick and I are about to register our marriage, and you still have to come here and get between us?"

Several people nearby were waiting to register their marriages, and at Lana's words, they all turned to look in our direction.

Embarrassed, I tried to explain, "I'm not here for Patrick."

"Who are you trying to fool?" Lana's voice grew even louder. "You followed us all the way to the city hall, and you still have the nerve to deny it? I'm telling you—if you ever harass my husband again, I'll beat you to death. Get lost! Don't ruin our special day."

Patrick's expression hardened as well. "Agnes, you're making a real fool of yourself. Just leave. I don't want you embarrassing yourself any further."

Just then, a clear and resonant voice rang out from behind me.

"What's so embarrassing about my wife?"

We moved to a small seaside town overseas. Our house had a little courtyard with a lemon tree growing in the middle. Bradley liked to sit beneath it and read while I made him coffee nearby. The coffee came from Dad. He'd sent it to us, saying it was grown by the family of one of his students in Fulaware. Whenever I brought Bradley his coffee, he would look up at me with a bright, sunny smile that crinkled his eyes.I started my own company here, earning a steady income without having to work around the clock like I used to. Meanwhile, Bradley taught at a nearby college. Our life was incredibly simple, but we were happy and at peace. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking pictures by the sea.The old man held up his phone while his wife posed for him, and the two of them dissolved into laughter."Do you think we'll be like that someday?" Bradley suddenly asked me.I squeezed his hand. "Definitely.""Agnes, do you ever regret leaving?"I tho

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Bradley frowned and started to step forward, but I gently pressed a hand against his arm. Then, I pulled free of Patrick's grip and took half a step back. When Patrick saw that I wasn't reacting, he began shouting at the top of his lungs, "Everyone, come and look! This woman was with me for three years, and now that she's found a rich man to latch onto, she's running off overseas!"I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old son, and she can't even be bothered to ask how they're doing! Tell me, everyone, how can someone be this heartless?"More and more travelers gathered around us.A middle-aged woman planted her hands on her hips. "She's so obsessed with money that she'd even abandon her own child! What kind of person does that?""Exactly! She already has a child and she still wants to run away? Someone should expose her!"Bradley stepped forward and raised his voice."Everyone, don't just take Patrick's word f

"When Dad passed away, I promised him I would take good care of you, and I kept that promise. But from now on, you're on your own."Isaac started to panic. "Agnes, don't do this! I was wrong! I really know I messed up! Please just forgive me this once—I'll do whatever you say from now on!"I shook my head, even though he couldn't see me. "It's too late, Isaac. When you handed Douglas a gummy at Thanksgiving dinner, did it ever cross your mind that I was your sister?"I hung up and blocked his number too.Bradley hadn't said a word the entire time. He sat quietly beside me, peeling an apple. When he finished, he handed it to me."Have a bite—it's really sweet. Tomorrow, we'll go to the supermarket to pick up some essentials. The day after that, we'll fly overseas to see our new home."I nodded, then took the apple and bit into it. He was right—it was really sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened with emotion.Bradley didn't ask if I was sad. Instead, he simply leaned over and re

I stared at Patrick's name on the screen but didn't answer.Bradley glanced at me. "You can pick up and clear things up with him if you want."I shook my head. "I don't want to take his calls because there's nothing to say."I declined his call, but Patrick refused to give up. He called seven times in a row before I finally had no choice but to answer.Patrick immediately shouted, "Agnes, where's Dad's medication? You haven't delivered this month's supply yet. What the hell are you playing at?"I held my phone, saying nothing. My silence only made Patrick angrier."Cat got your tongue? Listen, if you come over right now with the medication and pay for the next round of treatment, I'll pretend none of this ever happened. Do you hear me?"I took a deep breath and replied, "Patrick, I'm already married. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, so I have no reason to be responsible for your father's medication."There was a brief silence on the other end before Patrick explo

Bradley draped an arm around my shoulders, then looked Patrick and Lana up and down."Who are you, people? What gives you the right to tell my wife to get lost?" he asked with a frown."Wife?" Patrick repeated, then turned to me, shocked and furious. "Agnes, who is he?"Before I could answer, Bradley pulled out our marriage certificate and held it up to Patrick."I'm her husband. We just registered our marriage today."Patrick's face drained of color instantly, while Lana stood frozen in shock.More and more onlookers gathered around us, eager to see what would happen next."Agnes, y-you got married?" Patrick asked in disbelief. "We haven't even broken up yet, and you've already gone and registered your marriage to another man? Have you no shame?"Lana quickly chimed in, "Agnes, you're still with Patrick, yet you've already married another man? If that's not cheating, then what is? Everyone, look at this shameless woman!
