Chapter 3

작가: Pretty Handsome
I raised my hand to slap Lana back, but Patrick seized my wrist in a vice-like grip.

I glanced around the room. Everyone was looking at me like I was their sworn enemy.

Cradled in Lana's arms, Douglas kept crying and pointing at me.

"I hate her! Make her leave! Make her leave!"

Patrick pointed toward the door. "Agnes, Douglas is scared of you. Stop making him cry. Just leave for now."

Before I could even react, he forcibly shoved me outside. The door slammed shut behind me, and everyone inside started hurling insults at me.

It had started raining outside. I reached into my pocket and realized I'd left my car keys in the room.

I turned around and pounded on the door several times.

Someone inside shouted through it, "Why are you still shamelessly hanging around here? Do you have to scare Douglas to death?"

"Give me my car keys!" I shouted back.

Then Patrick's voice came from inside. "Douglas gets triggered whenever he sees you, so we can't open the door. Why don't you figure out how to get home yourself?"

I lowered my hand. My chest tightened painfully as a damp chill slowly seeped through my entire body.

I stood in the rain for nearly an hour before I finally managed to hail a car. The moment I got in, I received a message from Emma Harding, my college classmate.

"Agnes, are you still getting Mr. Underwood's medication for his next course of treatment?"

Ever since his heart surgery, Mr. Underwood had seemed to recover well on the surface, but his condition remained fragile.

His doctor had prescribed an imported medication that he needed to take long-term without interruption. It was hard to get locally, and only with Emma's help did I manage to secure a reliable supply.

The medication was ridiculously expensive at 400 dollars a box. Since no one else ever offered to pay, I'd been covering the cost all along.

But now that Mr. Underwood was no longer going to be my father-in-law, there was no reason for me to keep paying for his medication.

"I won't be getting it anymore," I replied.

Emma quickly messaged back. "What happened? Was the medication not working?"

"Patrick and I broke up."

Emma went silent for a long while before finally replying, "Honestly, I never thought you two would break up. You were always so good to him, after all. I still remember how, back in college, you helped him with his projects and wrote his papers for him.

"You worked yourself to exhaustion and sometimes barely had time to eat, all so he could graduate without a hitch. I never imagined that even after graduation, you two wouldn't end up together."

I replied, "That's all in the past now."

I closed my eyes and slept through the rest of the ride.

When I got home, I added the WhatsApp contact Professor Massey had given me. His display name was simple—Bradley Massey.

After hesitating for a moment, I sent him a message.

"I don't want to hide anything from you. I've just come out of a relationship, and things ended pretty badly."

He replied almost immediately, "I know. You were engaged before, right?"

I was about to send another message, but then I realized it might be difficult to explain everything over text. So, I decided to call him instead.

After I told Bradley the whole story about Patrick and me in one breath, he said, "I'm looking for someone suitable to marry. What happened on your end wasn't your fault. Since you've decided to end things with Patrick, I'm willing to go ahead with you. Let's register our marriage in three days."

I froze for a moment.

Three days from now was the day Patrick and I had originally agreed to register our marriage. But he'd had a child with Lana, and now I was about to marry someone else.

"Okay."

After the call ended, I was about to text Patrick to formally end our engagement. But before I could finish typing, the door opened.

Patrick stormed in and pointed an accusing finger at me.

"Agnes, you deliberately made a scene today and upset Dad so badly that his heart started acting up! You ruined Thanksgiving for everyone! And Douglas was so frightened by what you did that he's still crying and feeling insecure.

"To make it up to Douglas and help him feel more secure, you don't need to show up for the marriage registration in three days. Lana will go instead. That way, no one will call Douglas a bastard, and he'll be able to grow up healthy and confident.

"You're the reason Douglas feels so insecure in the first place, so Lana and I getting married is how you make amends. You have no right to object!"

Thinking about how I'd be registering my own marriage in three days, I nodded and said, "I have no objections."

We moved to a small seaside town overseas. Our house had a little courtyard with a lemon tree growing in the middle. Bradley liked to sit beneath it and read while I made him coffee nearby. The coffee came from Dad. He'd sent it to us, saying it was grown by the family of one of his students in Fulaware. Whenever I brought Bradley his coffee, he would look up at me with a bright, sunny smile that crinkled his eyes.I started my own company here, earning a steady income without having to work around the clock like I used to. Meanwhile, Bradley taught at a nearby college. Our life was incredibly simple, but we were happy and at peace. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking pictures by the sea.The old man held up his phone while his wife posed for him, and the two of them dissolved into laughter."Do you think we'll be like that someday?" Bradley suddenly asked me.I squeezed his hand. "Definitely.""Agnes, do you ever regret leaving?"I tho

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Bradley frowned and started to step forward, but I gently pressed a hand against his arm. Then, I pulled free of Patrick's grip and took half a step back. When Patrick saw that I wasn't reacting, he began shouting at the top of his lungs, "Everyone, come and look! This woman was with me for three years, and now that she's found a rich man to latch onto, she's running off overseas!"I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old son, and she can't even be bothered to ask how they're doing! Tell me, everyone, how can someone be this heartless?"More and more travelers gathered around us.A middle-aged woman planted her hands on her hips. "She's so obsessed with money that she'd even abandon her own child! What kind of person does that?""Exactly! She already has a child and she still wants to run away? Someone should expose her!"Bradley stepped forward and raised his voice."Everyone, don't just take Patrick's word f

"When Dad passed away, I promised him I would take good care of you, and I kept that promise. But from now on, you're on your own."Isaac started to panic. "Agnes, don't do this! I was wrong! I really know I messed up! Please just forgive me this once—I'll do whatever you say from now on!"I shook my head, even though he couldn't see me. "It's too late, Isaac. When you handed Douglas a gummy at Thanksgiving dinner, did it ever cross your mind that I was your sister?"I hung up and blocked his number too.Bradley hadn't said a word the entire time. He sat quietly beside me, peeling an apple. When he finished, he handed it to me."Have a bite—it's really sweet. Tomorrow, we'll go to the supermarket to pick up some essentials. The day after that, we'll fly overseas to see our new home."I nodded, then took the apple and bit into it. He was right—it was really sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened with emotion.Bradley didn't ask if I was sad. Instead, he simply leaned over and re

I stared at Patrick's name on the screen but didn't answer.Bradley glanced at me. "You can pick up and clear things up with him if you want."I shook my head. "I don't want to take his calls because there's nothing to say."I declined his call, but Patrick refused to give up. He called seven times in a row before I finally had no choice but to answer.Patrick immediately shouted, "Agnes, where's Dad's medication? You haven't delivered this month's supply yet. What the hell are you playing at?"I held my phone, saying nothing. My silence only made Patrick angrier."Cat got your tongue? Listen, if you come over right now with the medication and pay for the next round of treatment, I'll pretend none of this ever happened. Do you hear me?"I took a deep breath and replied, "Patrick, I'm already married. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, so I have no reason to be responsible for your father's medication."There was a brief silence on the other end before Patrick explo

Bradley draped an arm around my shoulders, then looked Patrick and Lana up and down."Who are you, people? What gives you the right to tell my wife to get lost?" he asked with a frown."Wife?" Patrick repeated, then turned to me, shocked and furious. "Agnes, who is he?"Before I could answer, Bradley pulled out our marriage certificate and held it up to Patrick."I'm her husband. We just registered our marriage today."Patrick's face drained of color instantly, while Lana stood frozen in shock.More and more onlookers gathered around us, eager to see what would happen next."Agnes, y-you got married?" Patrick asked in disbelief. "We haven't even broken up yet, and you've already gone and registered your marriage to another man? Have you no shame?"Lana quickly chimed in, "Agnes, you're still with Patrick, yet you've already married another man? If that's not cheating, then what is? Everyone, look at this shameless woman! She's married another man without even breaking off her e

Patrick looked surprised."You really have no objections? You're not angry?" he asked."Not at all," I replied. "No one wants their own child to be called a bastard."He nodded in relief. "I'm glad you can see reason. We can still have the wedding ceremony. In everyone else's eyes, you and I will still be husband and wife. It doesn't matter whose name is on the marriage certificate."I nodded without saying a word.Patrick continued, "There's one more thing. Raising a child is incredibly demanding these days, and I'm already exhausted just taking care of Douglas. So, after we get married, let's not have any children of our own."Instead, you'll raise Douglas as if he were your own son. He's smart and has great potential. We'll leave all our assets to him, and I'm sure he'll take care of you when you're old."Without the slightest hesitation, I nodded and said, "Okay."Patrick paused, his brows drawing together slightly as a flicker of unease crossed his eyes."Why are you bein
