— Xander —

I was halfway through fastening my cufflinks when the phone lit up on the dresser.

Veronica.

I let it ring.

She called again.

And again.

I adjusted the watch on my wrist instead, slow and deliberate. The island air was already creeping into the room through the open balcony doors—salt, heat, quiet. The kind of quiet that sharpened rather than soothed.

The phone buzzed a fourth time.

I exhaled through my nose and answered.

“What?”

Her breath came first. Sharp. Offended.

“You disappear,” she said, voice already pitched for accusation, “and I find out from council whispers that you’ve left the mainland? Without notifying me?”

I glanced at my reflection in the mirror. Calm. Collected. Unbothered.

“Since when,” I asked coolly, “have my whereabouts been any of your business?”

Silence.

Not surprise. Calculation.

Then she laughed softly, the way she did when she wanted to sound amused but wasn’t.

“You’re with her,” Veronica said. “Aren’t you?”

I said nothing.

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 141: You will learn

    — Xander —The balcony doors were already open when I stepped out.Salt carried on the wind, sharp and clean, nothing like the cities I ruled. The island stretched beneath the estate in dark layer filled with jagged rock, sparse palms bending to the night, the sea endlessly moving like it had never learned obedience. Lights from the lower terraces glowed dim and controlled, my men stationed where they always were. Silent and watching. She stood at the railing like she didn’t belong to anything behind her.Avelyn wore one of the dresses the maids had chosen, linen, pale and deceptively soft. The wind played with the hem, tugged strands of her hair loose. She didn’t turn when she sensed me. She’d learned by now that pretending I wasn’t there didn’t make me disappear. But I could see she tried to, during the conversation she didn’t want to have and how awkward it made her feel afterwards. But I didn’t care about that, something else was bothering me. Her neck was still wrapped in the

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 140: Mine

~ Avelyn ~I found out the island was real when the helicopter dipped low enough for me to see it.It looked surreal, green, untouched and almost arrogant in how beautiful it was.Mine.Glaring back at my terrible decisions, the one I’d bought on impulse months ago, during one of those rare moments when money felt unreal and consequences felt far away. A private listing. Clean paperwork. My name alone on the deed. I’d never visited it. Never even planned to. It had been nothing more than a reckless yes signed in ink.Now Xander was bringing me here like it had always been part of the plan. The helicopter blades thundered above us, drowning out thought. I sat stiffly across from him, my hands folded in my lap because I didn’t know what else to do with them. My body still felt hollow from the hospital. From Ariana’s face. From the way the doctor’s words had landed and never left.Xander didn’t look at me once during the descent. That was worse than if he had, I could tell he was still s

~ Avelyn ~The nurse told us Ariana could receive visitors. Her voice was soft, practiced, like this was just another update in a long shift. Like nothing permanent had happened.I went in first. The room smelled like disinfectant and something faintly sweet that made my stomach turn. Ariana was turned on her side, her back to the door. Her shoulders shook in short, uneven bursts. She had her face pressed into the pillow, like she was trying to disappear into it.I stood there too long.I didn’t know what you were supposed to say to someone who lost something they hadn’t even gotten to love out loud yet.“Ari…” My voice came out thin. She turned so fast I barely registered it before the pillow flew.It hit my chest and bounced to the floor.“Get out!” she screamed. “Get out!”Kyle stepped in at that exact moment, picked up the pillow, and steadied me with a hand on my shoulder from the side. It was instinctive, protective and familiar. But not what I needed at this moment.Ariana sta

~ Avelyn ~They didn’t call an ambulance.I realized that the moment Ariana was lifted into the back seat of one of Xander’s cars instead of a stretcher. Blood had already been wiped. Guns were gone. Bodies stayed behind like they never mattered. Someone shut the warehouse doors as if closing a chapter instead of a crime scene.Police would come. Eventually. But not before we were gone.Ariana was unconscious, her head tilted awkwardly against the leather seat, her breathing shallow but steady. One of Xander’s men pressed a cloth to her mouth and nose, murmuring instructions into a phone. I didn’t understand the words, just the urgency.I rode in a different car.Of course I did.Xander didn’t follow either of us. He gave orders, short and final, then disappeared into the night like this was just another mess he had already finished cleaning. That hurt more than I wanted to admit. The drive to the hospital blurred. Streetlights streaked past the window. My hands shook in my lap, stai

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 137: The world went quiet

~ Avelyn ~I woke up with cold biting straight through my skin on concrete pressing against my skin, it felt damp beneath me.My head throbbed the second I tried to move, and the ache spread down my spine like a warning. I didn’t open my eyes immediately. I listened first. That instinct had kept me alive more times than I liked to admit.I hearth voices.Male speaking lowly without rush somewhere ahead of us. I also heard metal scraping, a lighter clicking, the echo of boots against stone. This wasn’t a room. It was too open and hollow to be called one. When I finally forced my eyes open, the ceiling above me was cracked and stained, pipes running like exposed veins. It looked like a warehouse or something that used to be.The smell gave it away immediately. That old rust and mold mixed with stagnant water. My wrist screamed when I shifted, a reminder of the tight rope cutting my circulation, same with my ankles. And beside me—“Ariana,” I whispered, my voice barely there. She was
