Chapter 4

Author: Sankey
The side wing reeked of bitter medicine.

The moment the physician placed his fingers on my pulse, his expression changed. My pulse was barely there. What little life I had left was fading.

He glanced at me lying on the bed, ashen as a corpse, and composed himself before hurrying straight to Odette's wing.

Before long, word came. Odette had vomited blood again and lost consciousness. She was slipping away.

Alaric and my parents were beside themselves, threatening to have the physician's head.

The physician dropped to his knees before everyone in the main hall. "Ms. Odette's chronic illness has worsened with each shock. Her heart is failing. There is only one remedy left."

"What is it? Speak!" Alaric demanded.

"I need blood drawn directly from the chest of a woman who has just given birth. It is the only way to sustain her heart and cure the illness at its root."

A woman who had just given birth. Every eye in the room turned naturally to me.

By the time Alaric arrived at the side wing, the bleeding between my legs had only just been stopped with medicine the servants had forced down my throat.

He walked to the bed, bent down, and lifted me into his arms.

His hands were as gentle as ever. He even wrapped his own cloak around me, careful to shield me from the slightest draft on the walk to the main hall. But the words that came out of his mouth were merciless.

"Laurel, just this once. Give the blood and cure Odette for good. Then your debt to her is paid, completely. Once she's better, I promise you can raise the next child yourself."

I leaned against his chest. I did not struggle. I did not argue.

When we reached the main hall, the physician made a demand before the procedure. "To ensure the blood's potency, Her Grace must be cleansed first. Her body still carries impurities from the baby's delivery. They would contaminate the remedy."

The cleansing took place in the courtyard behind the estate, in a stone basin filled with water drawn from the deep well.

The cold had already settled into my bones. The instant my feet touched the freezing water, my entire body seized in violent spasms.

I clenched my teeth. Several stout attendants grabbed me and forced me down into the basin.

Alaric stood at the edge. His fist was clenched tight inside his sleeve, but he did not say a word to stop it.

I sat in that water, cold enough to crack bone marrow, for a full half hour.

When the time was up, Alaric stepped forward and pulled me out himself. He took a cloth and wiped the water from my face with careful hands, then bundled me in a thick blanket.

Yet before I was even dry, I was laid onto the cushioned table in the center of the heated room.

A large portrait hung on the wall of the main chamber. In it, Alaric and Odette sat side by side. The children gathered around them, climbing into their laps. Father and Mother stood behind them, beaming.

Across the bottom of the frame, a single word had been painted in gilded —'Family'.

On the other side of the screen stood my parents and my four children. All four of them had their hands pressed over their noses, staring at me with open disgust.

The little girl stepped out from behind them, carrying a delicate crystal chalice cupped in both hands, and stood beside the table.

My heart skipped when I saw it.

It was the chalice Alaric had carved for me himself on our wedding day. He had told me that as long as we drank from it together during the ceremony, we would grow old side by side and fill our home with children and grandchildren.

The physician approached with a thin blade.

The tip parted the skin over my chest and the pain tore through me so sharply that my back arched off the table. Alaric moved in at once, one hand gripping my wrist, the other pressing my shoulder flat.

The needle drove deep, but I had already lost so much blood that the flow from my chest came in a thin, sluggish trickle.

The physician wiped sweat from his brow and looked urgently at Alaric. "My Lord, Her Grace has almost no blood left. It won't come out. I'll have to cut deeper."

Alaric's hand tightened over mine until the veins stood out. He closed his eyes. "Do it."

The blade sank deep into the flesh, pressing dangerously close to my heart.

My vision went black in waves. I did not have the strength left to fight.

Inside my mind, the System's voice rang out with perfect clarity.

[Departure channel ready. Countdown: ten seconds.]

I struggled to move my fading eyes, trying to look past the screen for one last glimpse of my children.

What I saw was Teddy turning away, his face twisted in disgust. "That's so much blood. It's gross."

The crystal chalice filled to the brim at last.

Alaric wasted no time directing the servants to carry it away. He followed them into the inner room with quick, urgent steps. All four children scrambled after him.

The last thing I heard before consciousness left me was Alaric's voice, soft and coaxing. "Odette, drink it. Drink it and you'll be better."

The physician noticed something was wrong with me. He fumbled over himself trying to stop the bleeding.

However, I had gone completely still. The blood seeping from my chest slowed to nothing.

He reached for my breath, then staggered back two steps and half-fell, half-crawled into the inner room.

"My Lord... Her Grace... she's gone."

The dizziness of crossing between worlds faded. When I opened my eyes, I was standing beside the same stone basin where they had once forced me into the freezing water. The snow and wind were the same, but everything around me had fallen to ruin. Not far away, a skeletal figure of a man knelt at the center of a ritual altar. At its edge knelt four ragged shapes. The eldest, Teddy, could not have been more than 12 or 13, but his back was already bent under the weight of the life he had lived. One eye was gone. His face was a patchwork of frostbite scars and old wounds. These were the four children who had once stood above everyone else."Laurel..." Alaric's head snapped up. Something blazed to life in his clouded eyes.He crawled toward me through the snow on his hands and knees, dragging a long smear of blood behind him."You're back... I traded five years of my life and everything I had left to bring you here."He seized Laurent's hand with frantic energy and pushed the boy t

Alaric placed me in a glass casket inside the underground vault beneath the estate. He forbade anyone from coming near, except for the fifth child.Of all five, he was the only one Odette had never gotten her hands on. He had never thrown a stone at me, never spoken a single cruel word. He had only just been born. He was untouched, unmarked by any of that woman's poison.Alaric poured every ounce of his guilt and regret into that child. He named him Laurent, declared him the sole heir of the Regent's household, and kept him at his side day and night, raising him on his own.He spent his days and nights in the vault. With the same carving knife he had once used to shape the wedding chalice, he sat carving rocking horses, one after another.Blood ran freely from the gashes in his palms, but he did not seem to notice. He just kept talking to the empty air, his voice unsteady and strange."Laurel, look. See the mane on this one? Do you think Laurent will like it when he's older? Don't

"Oh God..." Mother's legs gave out the moment the physicians finished their verdict. She dropped to her knees, wailing.Father had gone white. He stumbled backward until he hit the pillar and slumped against it, his lips trembling around words that would not come.It had finally dawned on them. They had helped a bastard daughter murder the only woman in the family capable of giving Alaric children, the only woman who had made them valuable."Odette! You wretched girl! You lied to all of us!"Mother lunged at her like a woman possessed, slapping Odette across the face with one hand and then the other."You heartless snake! Laurel was your own sister! You stole her children, and then you took the blood from her chest! Give me back my Laurel!"She beat her own chest as she sobbed, but the grief in her eyes had nothing to do with her daughter and everything to do with the wealth and status she had just watched slip away.Odette's hair came loose from its pins. Blood trickled from th

The guards worked fast. In less than half an hour, a stream of evidence had been laid out on the stone floor of the main hall.Alaric seized Odette's chin in his hand."You jumped into that water yourself that day, didn't you?"Her features twisted in pain. She could see the game was over, and the fragile mask she had worn for seven years split apart in an instant."So what if I did?" She met his eyes. "If I hadn't jumped, would you ever have willingly handed me her children to raise?"She stared at him, her gaze brimming with a warped mix of hatred and satisfaction. "Why are you so angry, my Lord? Did you think I could have driven her to this point all on my own in seven years?"Her voice rose. "It was you, Alaric. You carried those babies out of the room with your own hands. You looked her in the eye and told her they were dead."Every single time she was in so much pain she choked on her own blood, you were right there handing over the knife. So don't you dare stand here now

"My Lord... What on earth has happened..."The curtain to the inner room was drawn aside by a handmaid, and Odette appeared in the doorway, leaning weakly against the frame. She looked at Teddy, whose face was streaked with blood and tears, then at Alaric, who was radiating fury. Tears spilled down her cheeks."Why are you so angry, my Lord? Did Teddy do something to upset you?" She tottered forward and reached for Alaric's sleeve."Get off me!" Alaric flung her hand away with such force that she fell to the floor. He stood over her, his finger trembling as he pointed at my lifeless body on the table."What kind of vile things have you been teaching those children? Were you ever truly dying, or was this all a scheme to kill her?"Odette went white. She pressed herself against the floor and wept. "You're wrong, my Lord. I would never say those things. Teddy must have misheard... I'm heartbroken that my sister is gone."But my heart truly is failing. The physician said it himself.

Alaric stared at the physician kneeling on the floor, his brow creased in open displeasure. "Watch yourself. What kind of nonsense are you spouting?"The physician was drenched in sweat, trembling where he knelt. "My Lord, I would never dare make such a claim lightly. Her Grace... She truly is not breathing.""Shut your mouth!" Alaric's voice cracked through the room. He set the crystal chalice down on the table hard enough to send droplets of red spattering across the surface. He crossed the room in long strides, stepped past the screen, and the moment his eyes reached the table, he stopped dead.I lay on the cushioned table with my eyes closed. Dark blood traced a line along the edge of the table, dripping steadily onto the stone floor.Alaric stumbled forward and dropped to his knees beside the table.
