Chapter 4

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Charlotte continued, "I already told you, it's only for seven days. Find something of your own to do over the next few days instead of pestering us. I told you we're getting remarried. Why won't you listen?"

Looking at the deep disappointment written across her face, I felt nothing.

"Sorry," I said quietly. "My bad. It won't happen again."

I turned to leave, but Charlotte froze and suddenly caught my arm. A hint of sympathy crossed her face.

"I'm sorry, Alan. I was too harsh. I promise, he's just a fling. I don't really have feelings for him. No one is ever going to take your place. Please, just trust me, okay?"

I nodded. "Okay."

I pulled my arm free and walked away alone.

For the next few days, I stayed inside the hotel to avoid running into them again.

During that time, Bradley tracked down my socials and deliberately sent me photos of him and Charlotte together.

"Alan, Charlotte took me shopping for a suit. It cost thousands of dollars."

"Alan, I'm staying at your place tonight. You won't get mad, will you?"

"Alan, you must be furious, right? But what can you do? An old face like yours just can't give Charlotte that spark anymore."

I didn't reply to a single message.

I passed the days in quiet solitude, eating three simple meals a day, much like the years I spent waiting at home for Charlotte to return.

On the seventh day, I put on a clean set of clothes, checked out of the hotel, and got into my car. I drove aimlessly down the road, ready to greet the end of my life.

Along the way, Charlotte—who hadn't reached out in days—unexpectedly called.

Her voice sounded bright and cheerful. "Honey, I'll be back home right at midnight to be with you. You must be happy, right?"

I gave a few hollow responses and hung up.

The next second, a violent crash roared through the air, and a crimson haze burst across my vision.

The car slammed into the median, and flames instantly engulfed the vehicle.

Agony tore through every inch of my body as my consciousness began to fade.

Was this finally over?

Through the haze, I faintly heard sirens. Soon, several people pulled me from the wreckage.

I saw someone pick up my phone and dial Charlotte's number.

"Hello? Is this Alan Miller's family? He's been in a terrible car accident."

There was a moment of silence on the other end before Bradley's voice cut in. "Charlotte, it's the very last day. Is Alan really that impatient that he has to make up a lie like this to trick you into going back?"

Charlotte quickly cut Bradley off and grabbed the phone.

"Alan, stop making jokes like this," she said softly. "It's not nice. Didn't I say I'd be back at midnight? Just wait for me."

The person holding the phone realized she'd misunderstood and tried to explain. "No, wait—"

But Charlotte hung up.

With no other choice, the paramedics focused on trying to save me.

My consciousness grew fainter, and even the excruciating pain began to fade away.

I was rushed to the hospital, where they hooked me up to countless life-support machines, but nothing worked. The monitor beeped faintly as my vital signs dwindled.

Flashes of my life with Charlotte since I'd arrived in this world swept through my mind.

Our first encounter, confessing our feelings, falling in love, walking down the aisle…

She once promised she would love me forever.

Then she said she couldn't help falling for new men, but I would always be her husband.

In the end, I didn't even get to keep the title of her husband.

I was left with nothing.

Tears slid down my face.

The system's voice echoed in my head. "Beginning countdown to depart this world. Three… Two…"

At the same time, the heart monitor began to beep erratically.

As the countdown hit one, the line on the monitor went completely flat.

Midnight of the eighth day had arrived.

The next second, the ER doors burst open, and Charlotte rushed inside. "Alan, I'm back!"

"Alan…"I felt nothing as I watched Charlotte collapse over my body, wailing uncontrollably."Regret points are now at 70!"70 already?I couldn't describe how I was feeling. It just seemed absurd. What good was belated remorse anyway?Right then, Jordan and Sharon finally arrived. The moment they stepped into the room and caught sight of my corpse, their eyes widened in horror."Alan? It's really Alan…"The elderly couple nearly lost their balance but managed to steady themselves by grabbing onto each other.Tears streamed down their faces as they broke down completely. "Alan, you were such a good man. How did it come to this?""Alan…"After crying for a long while, Jordan finally pulled himself together. He insisted my body couldn't stay at home and said that I needed a proper funeral.Charlotte violently pushed back. "No, Dad! I promised Alan I would stay with him. You can't take him! As long as I'm here, nobody touches Alan!"Watching her manic behavior, Jordan strode

Charlotte glared at Bradley coldly. Just as she was about to speak, a bodyguard hurried in. "Ms. Cooke, Mr. Miller's phone has been repaired."Charlotte snatched my phone from his hands and powered it on.She tapped into the photo gallery, hoping to find our old pictures, only to find the album entirely wiped clean. As she switched over to WhatsApp, she accidentally opened her chat with Bradley.Almost every hour of every day, he'd updated me on what he and Charlotte were doing."Alan, Charlotte and I are heading to bed. Night." Attached was a photo of the two of them."Alan, Charlotte told me she rediscovered her passion for life through me.""You're nothing more than a stagnant puddle.""Charlotte said she's even going to throw a wedding for me and marry me one day. Are you jealous yet?""Serves you right. You should've stepped aside a long time ago."Every single taunting message laid bare his true colors right in front of Charlotte's eyes.I never once replied.Yet to C

Charlotte said through tears, "Alan, you must've hated me. How could I hurt you like this? How could I…"Seeing her on the verge of collapsing, I longed to tell her that I didn't hate her.I had hated her, but that was in the past.I hated her for repeatedly going out with other guys and staying out all night, for neglecting me time and again to chase excitement elsewhere, and for breaking her promises over and over again. But I'd already moved on from the pain.So regardless of what she chose to do, I respected her decisions and accepted them calmly, without joy or sorrow.Just then, Charlotte's phone rang. She snatched it up immediately, shouting before even looking at the screen, "Did you find it? Did you find the box?""Find what, Charlotte? It's your dad. You better take a lesson from what happened last time and stop hurting Alan. Do you hear me? Where's Alan? Put him on the phone. Your mother's chronic knee pain is flaring up again. Tell him to come over and give her a ma

After a long silence, Charlotte finally spoke, but her voice was ice-cold. "Bradley, do you remember what I told you on our very first day?"Bradley paused before replying, "You said Alan was your husband and your primary partner. But Charlotte, you don't even like him—""Shut up!" Charlotte cut him off with a sharp screech. "Who I like is none of your business!"Sobs came through the line. "Charlotte…"Charlotte hung up on him immediately. She turned back to my body and gazed at it tenderly, muttering, "Alan, I'm sorry. I'll keep my promise. From today on, I'm staying right here to be with you. Don't worry. I'll never mess around with other men again."With that, she stood up abruptly and made a phone call.Moments later, four bodyguards hurried in, lifted my body, and carried it out to place it in the front passenger seat of Charlotte's car.Sitting right there on the dashboard was a thermos engraved with the letters "Brad", featuring a cartoon caricature of him and Charlotte

When Charlotte walked into the room, I suddenly felt a weightlessness as my soul drifted out of my body.I was hovering near the ceiling."Alan, stop playing games. I'm already here," Charlotte said, a relaxed smile on her face as if indulging a childish prank. But the moment her eyes landed on the deep pool of crimson on the bed, her steps faltered. She stopped in her tracks, hesitating for a few seconds."What are you doing? Someone told me Alan was in this room. Where is he?"The medical staff exchanged solemn looks, then glanced back at my mangled body on the bed. After a heavy silence, one of them spoke up gently. "I'm sorry, we did everything we could. Mr. Miller is gone."Charlotte's face went completely pale.A forced smile twitched at the corner of her lips as she asked coldly, "What is that supposed to mean?""Are you Ms. Cooke? When Mr. Miller was in the crash, we tried calling you, but you didn't believe us… Please accept our condolences."The medical team stepped
