CHAPTER 18

Camryn’s POV

Sterling's safehouse was in the worst part of Sector 5.

The building looked abandoned from outside, its windows boarded up and walls covered in grime and old posters. But when Amon knocked three times, paused, then knocked twice more, a door opened.

"Inside. Quickly," a voice hissed.

We slipped through. The interior was nothing like the exterior suggested. Clean and well-lit, with multiple rooms branching off a central hallway. The man who'd let us in was older, maybe sixty, with scars across his face and hands that marked him as a Hunter.

"Sterling sent word you were coming. I'm Mike," he said, looking us over. "You look like hell."

"We just destroyed House Gold's laboratory," Fabian replied. "Hell seems appropriate."

The man's eyes widened. "You what?"

"Long story," I said, hefting my satchel. "Is there somewhere we can lay all this out?"

He led us to a room with a large table. We emptied our satchels, spreading documents, photographs, and notes across the su

CHAPTER 33Camryn's POVI spent the morning teaching girls how to curtsy without looking like they were about to fall over.My mind wasn’t on the lesson. It was at the meeting with Pascal. The industrial sectors. Midnight. Six hours from now.“Miss Chavez?” Natasha raised her hand.“You’ve explained this curtsy three times now.”I blinked. “Right. Sorry. Let’s move on to dinner etiquette.”The rest of the class dragged on. When the bell finally rang, I dismissed them and headed straight for my room. I hurriedly changed out of my teaching dress into something darker, more practical. I checked my knife. The ward pendant Amon had given me. Everything I’d need if Pascal’s meeting turned into an ambush.Someone knocked.“Come in,” I said.Fabian stepped through, already dressed for the night. “Ready?”“As I’ll ever be.”We left through the service entrance, avoiding the main gates because we didn’t want guards asking us questions. The streets were quieter this time of night, most people al

CHAPTER 32Camryn's POVIt was the seventh match. A Stage Two Hunter this time, facing something that looked like a mass of writhing tentacles with too many eyes. The fight lasted longer; the Hunter actually managed to land hits before one of the tentacles caught his leg and slammed him into the ground. It was hard enough that I heard bones break from here.He didn't get back up.Henry Montague was celebrating, collecting winnings from whoever he'd bet against. His group of nobles was getting louder with each match, drunk on wine and violence.I glanced at Whitney. She hadn't moved since we sat down, her eyes fixed on the arena floor where they were dragging the Stage Two Hunter's body to the side. Her hands were clenched so tight in her lap that her knuckles had gone white."Whitney," I said quietly."Five hundred credits." Her voice was barely audible over the crowd noise. "That Hunter was Stage Two. Probably had a decent experience and knew what he was doing. And he still died. But

CHAPTER 31Camryn's POVWhitney led us through streets that grew darker the further we went, away from the gas lamps and into alleys where the only light came from windows three stories up. Fabian walked beside me, his hand resting on the knife at his belt."How much further?" I asked."Two more blocks." Whitney glanced back at us. "And when we get there, keep your mouths shut and your hoods up. The people running these auctions don't like questions."We turned a corner, and I saw a massive warehouse with boarded windows and a line of people stretching from its entrance into the shadows. Hunters, mostly. I could tell by the weapons and the way they moved and looked. But there were others too. Well-dressed men and women who looked like they'd wandered in from the Garden District. The wealthy, coming to watch their favorite blood sport."They really do this in person," I muttered."The radios are for the masses," Fabian said quietly. "But the real entertainment? That's exclusive. You pa

CHAPTER 30Camryn's POVThe original Camryn’s journals were spread across my desk like evidence at a crime scene.I’d been at it for two hours, squinting at her cramped Lenorian handwriting by lamplight, trying to piece together fragments that still didn’t make sense. My neck hurt. My eyes burned. And I was no closer to understanding why someone had executed her than I’d been when I started.“Come on,” I muttered, flipping to another page. “Give me something new.”I flipped over the pages and saw an entry; it was dated three months before her death. Something about genealogy records at House Rosetti, about gaps in the family trees that didn’t add up. She’d circled certain names and drawn lines connecting bloodlines that shouldn’t connect. But the rest was in that formal Lenorian script Fabian had been teaching me, the kind used for official documents. I could make out maybe half of it.I was reaching for my translation notes when someone knocked.I shoved the journals into my desk dra

CHAPTER 29Camryn's POVThe classroom went silent.I kept my expression neutral even as my heart kicked against my ribs. “Where did you hear that?”“My mother mentioned it at dinner. Said you were connected to one of the extinct families, that House Rosetti took you in out of charity.” Natasha smiled with all her teeth. “Is that why you’re teaching instead of married off like the rest of us will be?”Several girls giggled. Others looked uncomfortable, aware that Natasha was pushing boundaries that shouldn’t be pushed.“My family history,” I said carefully. “Is my own business. And yes, I’m teaching because I choose to. Unlike some of you, I prefer having a purpose beyond being decorative at parties.”The giggling stopped. Natasha’s smile faltered.“Now,” I continued, moving back to the front of the classroom. “Let’s discuss the proper way to decline a dance invitation without causing offense. Since I’m sure several of you will need that skill at the upcoming Harvest Ball.”The rest of

CHAPTER 28Camryn's POVI woke to the smell of burnt coffee and Alex’s quiet humming from the kitchen area.My neck ached from sleeping curled on Whitney’s lumpy couch, my body feeling sore from the uncomfortable angles I’d held all night. Sunlight filtered through the grimy window, painting stripes across the worn floorboards. The apartment looked smaller in daylight, its cracks and water stains impossible to ignore.“You’re awake.” Whitney emerged from her bedroom, her dark hair loose around her shoulders, her eyes still heavy with sleep. “Good. Lex is making his, uhmm, let’s say, special breakfast.”“They’re not terrible,” Alex called before anyone could comment. “They’re rustic.”“You know ‘rustic’ means terrible, right?” Whitney shot back, but there was affection in her voice.I sat up slowly, the clothes Alex had given me wrinkled beyond any hope. I’d need to return to the school soon, slipping back into school carefully before anyone noticed I’d been gone overnight. The thought
