Hazel

I woke before the alarm and knew the date before I opened my eyes.

My mother’s birthday.

For a few minutes, I stayed under the blanket with my face turned toward the window. The room was still dark. Silas slept beside me, one arm resting near my waist without holding me. He had learned that I sometimes needed room before I knew how to ask for it.

I was grateful for that.

I stared at the ceiling and tried to remember my mother’s face without forcing the memory. Her smile came first. Then

Hazel The first flowers opened on the apple tree the week I finished my last exam.I found them while carrying two cups of tea into the garden. Three small white flowers had appeared on the highest branch, and a fourth sat lower down near the wall. I placed the tray on the bench and stood beneath the tree with my hand raised toward them.Silas came through the garden doors with a folded shirt over one arm.“You found them,” he said.“I found four.”“There were three yesterday.”“Then the tree is working harder than you.”He joined me beneath the branches and looked up. His hair was still damp from the shower, and his sleeves were rolled over his forearms. He had been awake since early morning, though he kept insisting he had slept well.“You have been checking this tree every day,” he said.“I planted it.”“You helped plant it.”“I held the shovel.”“You held the instructions.”“That was important.”He smiled and placed the shirt on the back of the bench. “Maya will be here soon.”“I

Hazel Silas came home with a black envelope in his hand.He placed it on the kitchen counter while I was cutting strawberries for breakfast. The envelope carried my aunt’s name in the corner and a gold seal across the back.I wiped my fingers on a towel. “What is that?”“A card.”“From her?”“Yes.”I stared at it without touching it. My aunt had already taken my mother’s bracelet from a box and used it to pull me into a café. I had no interest in opening another message from her, especially one that had been sealed with enough care to suggest somebody wanted it remembered.Silas took the knife from my hand and set it beside the cutting board.“You do not have to read it,” he said.“Then why did you bring it to me?”“Because it was delivered to the office. It has your name on it.”I folded my arms. “What does she want?”“She wants you at a dinner tomorrow evening.”“With her?”“With her and Octavia.”The room became quiet around us.I had not heard Octavia’s name spoken in several day

Leo povMaya’s apartment key had stayed on my ring for three days before I used it.I carried it everywhere, though I had no reason to take it from my pocket. It sat beside my car key and office key, small and plain, yet it demanded more care than either of them. Maya had given it to me with rules. Call first. Leave when she asks. Never use it because worry has turned into an excuse.I understood the rules because she had made them clear.Following them was another matter. On Thursday evening, I stood outside her building with a paper bag of groceries in one hand and my phone in the other. I had called twice. The first time, it rang until voicemail answered. The second time, she picked up long enough to tell me she was in the shower and would call me back. That had been forty minutes ago.I looked at the key on my ring, then put it back in my pocket. The front door opened behind me. Maya came out wearing an oversized sweater, jeans, and damp hair gathered over one shoulder. She carrie

Hazel The silver flower bracelet stayed on my wrist all day. I wore it while I cooked with Maya, while I answered messages from university, and while I sat beside Silas in the garden with my mother’s recipe notebook open across my knees. The metal felt cold, but the meaning was warm. Every time I moved, the silver flower pressed against my skin, reminding me that my aunt had kept this from me for years. It was a piece of my mother, a connection I had been denied, and I wasn't ready to let it go.By evening, the bracelet had left a faint red mark around my wrist. Silas noticed it while we were eating at the restaurant by the river. He didn't say much at first, but he kept glancing at it.“You should take it off for a while,” he said, his voice low.“I will when I sleep,” I replied, pulling my wrist back slightly.“You can remove it now. It’s leaving a mark.”“I want to keep it on.”He didn't push me. He just watched me with those eyes that seemed to see everything. The dinner was quie

MayaLeo arrived with a toolbox, two paper bags, and a long wooden box balanced against his shoulder.I opened the door and stared at him.“What did you break?” I asked.“Nothing.”“That is disappointing.”He stepped inside and placed the box against the wall. “You said the bookshelf arrived.”“I said the bookshelf arrived. I did not ask you to build it.”“You sent me a photograph of the instructions.”“I sent it because the instructions were ridiculous.”“You sent it with six angry messages.”“I was expressing myself.”“You wrote, ‘If this shelf collapses, I am blaming the manufacturer, the delivery company, and every man involved in its design.’”“That was a calm message.”Leo carried the toolbox into the living room. “I brought sandwiches.”I closed the door behind him. “That changes things.”He had become familiar with my apartment during the past few weeks. His coat had occupied the same chair often enough that I had stopped moving it. A second mug waited beside the kettle becaus

Hazel My aunt chose a café with large windows and a crowded front room. She wanted witnesses. She also wanted me to feel watched.Silas parked across the street instead of stopping outside the entrance. He kept his word, though I noticed the way his eyes moved over the people near the door before we crossed. He did not touch me until I reached for his hand.Maya had arrived earlier and taken a table near the back. She lifted her cup when she saw us, then turned her attention to the book in front of her. She had promised to stay close without joining the meeting unless I needed her.I appreciated the effort.Silas opened the café door and allowed me to enter first. Warm air carried the smell of coffee, cinnamon, and toasted bread. My aunt sat alone near the window with her handbag placed on the chair beside her. She wore a cream coat and gold earrings I had never seen before.A small black box rested on the table. My heart moved toward it before the rest of me caught up.Silas noticed

Hazel pov The gymnasium still smelled like rubber and stale sweat when Coach Hendricks finally blew her whistle and released us from what I could only describe as a forty-five-minute experiment in human suffering. I peeled myself off the hardwood floor — we'd ended the session with a set of suici

The morning light filtered through the sheer curtains of Hazel’s bedroom, casting soft, honeyed streaks across the hardwood floor. Usually, Hazel loved the quietude of the early hours, but today, the air in the house felt different—charged with a static electricity that made the fine hairs on her a

Silas Silence had always been my sanctuary, but in this house, it felt like a loaded gun waiting to go off. I stood in the center of the sunlit kitchen, a glass of ice water in my hand, letting the condensation drip down my knuckles. The quiet hum of the refrigerator was the only sound anchoring m

Hazel Pov The afternoon sun bled through the gaps in the blinds, casting long, golden stripes across the hardwood floor of my bedroom. It was that specific, heavy kind of heat that settled over the house around three o'clock, the kind that made the air feel thick and time move like molasses. I gro
