Cameron POV

Evangeline pulled back before the oil touched her hair.

“Don’t use that on me!”

The oracle stopped with the bottle still raised.

Evangeline rushed closer to me and kept her arm close to her body.

“It makes me feel worse, Cameron. I can’t breathe.”

I reached out and took the bottle from the oracle before it tipped, then set it on the table.

“It’s only infused oil,” the oracle said. “Raven root, ginger, clove. It cleanses. It does not harm.”

Evangeline pushed herself up.

“It does.

Franklin Every suspicion I’d buried since the first moment I noticed something off about Evangeline was now crystallizing into reality. There was something wrong with her. Not just strange, sinister. Her hands were dirty. I could feel it in my bones. The evidence sat right in front of me, but the problem was tying it to her without leaving a gap she could exploit.Evangeline was intelligent. If I marched up to Cameron and told him I suspected his mate was capable of this, he would shut me down. He’d defend her. He’d call me paranoid. He’d choose her over me.After today, I was certain.I stayed in the doctor’s office, fluorescent lights buzzing overhead as I slid the lab results across his desk. They came from the hospital’s own lab, no one could claim forgery.“Will this affect the baby?” My voice came out rough. The doctor sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “We hope not. Whatever she ingested was designed to disrupt the pregnancy. Low dose, cumulative exposure.”The words hit

Lisa’s POV“She’s awake.”My mother’s voice was the first thing I heard when I woke up.The doctor walked in, a stethoscope dangling around his neck, a thick file clutched under his arm. Franklin stood by the window. The doctor didn’t waste time. He glanced at the cannula taped to my wrist, then reached for the thermometer.“Hi, Lisa,” he said calmly. “We got your blood work back. There are abnormal markers we can’t explain.”My stomach dropped. “What kind of markers?”“Easy,” he said, holding up a hand. “It’s not an immediate crisis, but these markers have no business being in your system during pregnancy.”I looked from my mom to Franklin. Everything he’d warned me about came rushing back.“What exactly are we talking about?” Franklin asked, stepping closer. “They don’t match any normal pregnancy response. It looks like a foreign substance entered her bloodstream. We’re still trying to identify it.”My hand pressed against my stomach. “How is the baby?”“The baby is stable for now,

Cameron slept in the chair beside my bed. I watched him with a smile.I asked him to stay, and he did. No argument, no resistance. He chose to be here even if his head wasn’t.He stayed because I asked, not because he wanted to. I could feel that difference now, and I hated that I could.I didn’t need him awake to feel it. Even like this, there was distance. But I had him with me, and that was enough for now.His phone buzzed on the table within reach. I brushed my fingers against his hand, light enough not to wake him.He didn’t move.Even that used to be enough to pull him back to me. Now I had to hold on tighter just to feel anything from him.He woke up minutes later to go pick up my mom and Kade then stepped out to freshen up.“How are you feeling?” mom asked. My response was a shrug. Her eyes stayed on me. “You don’t look fine.”“I’m here, aren’t I?”Keeps her calm. Keeps her from digging. If she starts asking real questions, she won’t stop.Kade’s gaze moved between us. I turne

Evangeline POVThe nurse tightened the cuff on my arm. The machine beeped sharp enough to draw a glance. The doctor checked the screen, then looked at me.“Her blood pressure is still elevated. We can’t proceed like this.”Cameron stood at the foot of the bed, dejected.“We’ll give it a few days,” the doctor said. “Two, maybe three. We need stability before we operate. This would be reckless.”“That’s fine,” Cameron said. “Do whatever you need.”The nurse adjusted the cuff again. I kept my breathing uneven, pushing the numbers higher. When the doctor turned to the nurse, I swallowed my smile.Too easy.“Keep monitoring her,” the doctor said, heading out. “No stress.”The room went quiet after they left, but Cameron didn’t. He picked up his phone and shifted to the side like that would hide anything.“Is something wrong?” I asked. He shook his head. “Nothing. Just Franklin.”“You’ve been on your phone all day,” I said.“It’s work. You know how it is. We’re going to be here for a while,

Franklin raised the hospital bed, and the tube in my arm tugged when I shifted. The monitor around my stomach kept a steady rhythm, tracking the baby. I watched the screen, then turned my attention away.I didn’t like how steady that sound was. It felt too calm compared to everything happening inside me. If something was wrong, it shouldn’t sound this normal. That part unsettled me more than the pain.James dropped my bag onto the chair. “I didn’t know what to pack.”“You brought going-out clothes. Planning to sneak me out?” I said with a chuckle.“I panicked. I don't know how long you'll be staying.”“She’s staying as long as she needs to. Even if it means spending the remainder of her pregnancy here,” Franklin said, causing me to roll my eyes.A nurse walked in, connected the IV line into my arm, made sure I was comfortable, and left.“What if this isn’t food?” I said to Franklin. “What if my body is rejecting the pregnancy?”Franklin scoffed. “You’re not a doctor. Let them do their

I can’t stand the smell.” Her hand moved over her arm as she scratched harder.Luna Catherine shot the oracle an apologetic look. “I apologize on my daughter's behalf. She didn’t mean to offend you.”The oracle didn’t answer her. She looked at Evangeline, then picked up her basket. “I hope you recover,” she said before turning and walking out. The scent stayed behind after she left and settled into the room without shifting.Evangeline walked to the door. “I need to wash this off.”“Eva, that
