Lisa’s POV

“She’s awake.”

My mother’s voice was the first thing I heard when I woke up.

The doctor walked in, a stethoscope dangling around his neck, a thick file clutched under his arm. Franklin stood by the window. The doctor didn’t waste time. He glanced at the cannula taped to my wrist, then reached for the thermometer.

“Hi, Lisa,” he said calmly. “We got your blood work back. There are abnormal markers we can’t explain.”

My stomach dropped. “What kind of markers?”

“Easy,” he said, holding u

FranklinThe shipment report was late. The last file arrived incomplete, so I left the window open on the screen while I waited for the corrected version. Cameron expected it by end of day. If I missed the deadline, he would assume I was too distracted by whoever poisoned Lisa. My coffee had gone cold. I drank it anyway and took a bite of the cake someone left on my desk. The sugar hit my throat the wrong way, so I spit the mouthful into a napkin. The updated file finally appeared in my inbox. I went through it line by line to fix a mismatch and then checked the data from the top again. I refused to send out work with errors. While I finished the last row of figures, my phone lit up with a hospital notification. I read the preview on the lock screen before completing my sentence. Then I picked up the device to open the message. The update said the baby was stable for now. They were going to keep monitoring Lisa. I scoffed.A stable baby should have been good news, but it felt empty. I

Lisa POVMy eyes stayed on the food tray in front of me. It was mashed potatoes with boiled chicken, covered with plastic and labeled with my name. I used my fork to lift a piece and poked at it without taking a bite.My mom laughed.“So now the hospital kitchen is part of the plot too?”“I don’t know,” I said. “Right now, anything feels possible.”She shook her head. “That’s not normal. You’re in a place that’s supposed to keep you alive.”“And I still ended up like this.”She didn’t answer immediately.“If someone did this, then it was planned. This didn’t just happen.”I kept my eyes on the tray.“Or,” I said, “there’s nothing to find, and this is just my body failing at the worst possible time.”She looked at me. “You don’t believe that.”I shrugged. The IV line stayed in my wrist, the last bag almost finished. The doctors said they had flushed out whatever was in my system. I felt better. The fever was gone. I could eat. I could sit up without feeling weak. But none of that meant

CameronThe forensic report on Lisa’s medication came in while I was speaking with Evangeline’s specialist, who ran through options in that careful tone doctors use when they don’t have answers but still want you to believe they do.He spoke about exploring alternative pathways for Evangeline's treatment, but his tone lacked the conviction I needed to hear, and I didn't have the luxury of waiting for medicine to catch up while she got worse right in front of me. Also, I couldn't take her home and watch her die because we ran out of options.Lisa’s report notification came through while he was still talking.Franklin’s suspicion suddenly pushed back into my head. If he was right and it pointed back to Evangeline, there wouldn’t be room to explain it away. No way to stand beside someone capable of ending a life out of spite. And Lisa would be within her rights to walk away, demand compensation, and drag us to court.“I’ll be back,” I said, cutting the specialist off as I stepped into the

The consent forms for Evangeline’s surgery were spread in front of me as I flipped through each page without really seeing the words. My name went down where it was needed, signatures placed, and consent given. It felt, in that moment, as though I was signing her life away. To make matters worse, Lisa’s voice stayed in my head and refused to fade, no matter how much I tried to ignore it. My gaze shifted to Evangeline, who was asleep on her bed, and it didn’t make any sense for them, for Franklin and now Lisa, to accuse her of whatever imaginary thing they thought she had done. I knew Evangeline, she was my mate, and although she had been insecure lately because of my attachment toward Lisa, I knew that she was incapable of murder. When the nurse asked about Evangeline’s medical history, Luna Catherine and I answered at the same time. “She’s been sick all her life,” Luna Catherine said, while I said, “The symptoms started three years ago.” The nurse, confused, looked between both of

Lisa POVThe rain slashed violently against the hospital window, fat streaks racing down the glass before breaking apart like my own fracturing thoughts. I lay curled on my side, staring at the watery lines, with nothing else to distract me from the restlessness I felt.I missed him.No ,“missed” was too pathetic for the storm raging in me. It was deeper than that. It felt like a raw craving that made my eyes burn. But admitting it felt dangerous and stupid. It had to be the pregnancy hormones twisting my mind, making me long for a man who belonged to someone else. There was nothing worth missing in Cameron. Nothing at all.My phone sat charging on the bedside table. I snatched it up and opened our old message thread before I could stop myself. The contrast was jarring. Early on, his texts had been blunt, no sugarcoating. Cold transactions between a powerful client and his paid surrogate. But somewhere along the line, the tone had shifted and became intimate as though we forgot we
