Franklin POV

We ended up in the library.

Cameron had pulled a stack of council reports onto the table and was trying to read them. Every few minutes, his eyes stopped moving across the page. He'd go still, stare at the same paragraph, and start again.

A leather folder sat open beside him.

His will.

I glanced at it and immediately wished I hadn't.

"Cameron. You're not dying. You're having a spectacularly bad month. Those are different things."

He held on to it even as I tried to snatch the folde

Im glad Cameron is lucid enough to decide Evangeline's not getting her evil fingers into his money and properties in the event he didn't make it.

  • TEMPORARY MATES, PERMANENT CRAVINGS    Four hundred and thirty six

Emma POVMy hands were shaking so hard I could barely keep my steering wheel straight.Every time my phone buzzed on the dashboard, my heart leaped into my throat. Lucas’s name flashed across the screen over and over. Right under his, Anita’s calls kept popping up. I ignored all of them. I couldn't pick up. If I heard Lucas tell me one more detail about Alexander lying bleeding in a cold prison cell, I knew I would completely lose my mind right behind the wheel.Nausea rolled through my stomach in violent waves, and my vision blurred around the edges as I slammed my foot on the gas.I was running out of time. The lies were collapsing. I couldn't fix this by myself anymore. I couldn't play administrator while my mate was getting executed in the dark.I took the turn onto Wesley’s estate driveway way too fast, gravel spraying against the underside of my car. I threw the vehicle into park, taking deep, ragged breaths in the front seat.Pull yourself together, Emma.Don't run in like a cr

Alexander POVEverything was a blurry haze when my eyes cracked open. The overhead light burned into my retinas, making my head throb. I was lying flat on a hard cot in the prison medical wing, the smell of antiseptic heavy in the air.Memory of the door creeping open rushed back, the masked bastards who tried to kill me.I looked down at myself. I was back in human form, wearing thin prison pants. The guards must have hit me with a tranquilizer after they dragged the attackers off me, forcing my body to drop the wolf shape while I was knocked out cold.My wolf seemed completely uninjured, but my human body was an absolute mess. Thick white bandages were wrapped tightly around my left ribs where the knife had sliced deep. But that wasn't the pain making my breathing shallow. It was the burning behind my sternum. The tightness I had felt earlier had morphed into a razor-sharp heartburn that radiated outward with every heartbeat. It felt like someone had poured liquid fire directly into

Charlie POVThe digital feed on my desk held steady. I sat in the monitoring room of the estate, watching Emma emerge through the vault's open iron gates, black bars framing her as she stepped back into the estate. She thought she was slick with her excuse of log sheets while I sat upstairs like a fool.I had watched every second of it on camera. She stood in front of the empty filing cabinet, panic rising on her face when she realized Alpha Edward's trial dossier wasn't there.I leaned back in my chair, rubbing the bridge of my nose as the pieces started clicking into place.Nobody requests archive clearance for a border tax audit. Emma was hunting for evidence to clear Alexander, the bastard rogue currently sitting in Iron Wells prison. It made my stomach turn. I had known Emma for years. She was practically allergic to chaos. People like that don't just up and get pregnant with an "unknown" father. They don't risk their entire reputation on random hookups. Two days ago, Zachary had

Emma POVMy morning started with my head buried in the toilet bowl. The morning sickness wasn't just bad. It was turning into a physical nightmare. Every smell in the house made my stomach flip, and the weird sensation in my midsection was getting harder to ignore. It felt like my skin was stretching, accompanied by a dull ache that made it impossible to stand up straight for too long.Anita stood in the doorway of my bathroom, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed. "You look like hell, Emma. We're going to the clinic today, whether you want to or not.""I'm fine," I wheezed, wiping my mouth with a wet towel. "It's just standard pregnancy stuff.""No, it isn't," Anita said flatly. "You haven't kept a full meal down in two days. If you keep ignoring this, she's going to call a private pack doctor to the house. You want them asking questions about who the father is?"That shut me up. My parents knew I was pregnant, but I had lied through my teeth and told them I didn't know wh

Alexander POVSix days left. Six days until the trial, and there was still no sign of who we needed to make my innocence weightier. The powerlessness of being trapped within these four walls, not knowing what those outside were doing or how far they had gone, was enough to drive me mad.Lucas was terrific at finding people, but he was a rogue, and without help from Emma, it would be almost impossible to find the Cook. Emma had assured me when she visited that she would do whatever she could to get me out of here, and I was banking on it with everything I had. They moved us out of the cell block at noon for a surprise search. The guards lined all of us up in the main hallway while they flipped our mats and searched our stuff. Kobe's eyes met mine, and I dodged through the crowd to reach him while acting as if I wasn't heading his way. After our last separation, it was obvious the head guards were keeping a close eye on me.Kobe leaned sideways just enough. "Six days, huh?""Yeah," I re

Emma POVThe ride back to the pull-off was quieter than the trip into the camp. Lucas drove the Jeep and seemed lost in thought.I glanced over at him, breaking the silence. "In two days, I'm going to send someone to pick you and some of your men up. We need to get supplies into the main camp."Lucas scoffed. "Supplies? You mean more of your charity handouts?""I mean food, Lucas," I said. "Bags of grain, flour, and meat, enough so the kids and elders don't go hungry. But you can't show up looking like rogue insurgents."Lucas shifted gears. "What's wrong with how I look?""Your leather jacket, dyed hair, edgy look," I said, raising an eyebrow. "You stick out like a sore thumb. I need you to keep it simple and look like regular people so the border guards don't second-guess."Lucas let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Right. Beggars can't be choosers, can they? You want me in a sweater, town girl?""If it keeps you from getting arrested before we free Alexander, yes," I shot back.He didn't

CAMERON POVRage tightened in my ribs, making breathing feel like an effort. I turned away from my sister and mate and leaned against the wall. "I won't do it. I have no interest in this absurd contract, and nothing you say will change my mind."Nadia stepped closer and placed her hand between my sh

The wooden floor of the community center felt cold beneath my sandals.“I’ll volunteer.”A girl in the back row let out a loud snort. Beside me, Sasha’s hand clamped onto my wrist, her fingers digging into my skin to pull me back down. I did not look at her. I knew that if I met her eyes, the logic

My father was screwing his secretary when I pushed his office door open. Wet slaps and grunts filled the room as he drove into her against the desk.My mother had spent three hours over the stove, squinting at a recipe she had memorized years ago. She packed my father's lunch and made me promise to

The Alpha house felt like I was entering it for the first time. Maids walked past me. Guards were posted at every corner, their eyes scanning the corridors. One thing was clear. Alpha Cameron was in the building. The four of us were in the main corridor like a line of silent competitors. Brianna had
