Elena’s POV

I left her at the window because she needed room, and I needed to not be the one standing in it.

She had gone quiet after what I said. She didn't snap at me or tell me about the contract again. She just stood there with her back against the glass, and I walked out before I did something that would break her rules.

Not hers, I thought as I shut the door of the east suite. Mine.

I took the phone from the false bottom of my leather bag. It looked like any other phone, but it had been

Dante’s POVI had told her to stay where I could see her. That was the plan, and it lasted for only about four minutes. I was listening to the ambassador talk about trade rules when Silas's voice came through the small earpiece, low and flat."Boss, Daniel just left the ballroom. He went through the same door as your wife." I felt my anger rising. I didn't say goodbye. I only said "Excuse me," and the old man was still talking when I walked away.I found them at the end of a dim hallway. Elena stood with her back to the wall and her chin up, in that red dress that had made grown men forget their own wives, and Daniel had the guts to go close to her. Daniel was in front of her, close enough to touch her, and he was smiling.I heard the last part of it. Your little pet beggar can play bodyguard all he likes.I put my hand on his shoulder.I didn't squeeze or pull. I just let it rest there, and I let him feel what was in it. I had spent half my entire life learning how to do that, to

Elena’s POV The red dress did exactly what Dante said it would.I felt it the moment we stepped out of the car. The cameras went off like a storm, and a hush rolled across the front steps of the Grand Hotel as the doorman looked at me and forgot to open the door."Breathe," Dante said, close to my ear."I am breathing.""Then stop gripping my arm like that." He chuckled dryly. I loosened my fingers. He didn't say anything else, but I felt the small smile in his silence, and it settled my nerves more than I wanted to admit. The dress was the deep red of old wine, cut low in the back and tight at the waist. The designer had pinned me for an hour that morning and refused to tell me how she'd made it so fast. Now I knew. She had probably been told to do it right, or not do it at all.Inside, the grand ballroom was full of gold light and glass and four hundred of the richest people in the city. A string quartet played near the stage. Waiters in white gloves moved between the tables,

Elena’s POV I woke up angry, which was the only way I knew how to start a bad day.The clock said 6:40. I had slept maybe three hours, and every one of them had been full of soft voices in my ear. I pulled a pillow over my face and wished morning wasn’t here. It didn't work. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, and then it buzzed again.I took it out from under the pillow. Four missed calls from Clara and two messages that said only “Please call me.”I called her back while I dragged myself out of bed."Miss Rostova, I'm so sorry to bother you this early," Clara said. She sounded like she hadn't slept either. "There's a post going around. It's from Lumière Daily, the fashion blog everyone reads.""What kind of post?""I'll send you the link, but I'll tell you the worst part now. They are hinting that your marriage is a trick."I stopped with one arm in my robe. "A trick.""A PR stunt. They say you married the disgraced outcast in a hurry to save your seat on the board, and that it's a

Mine.I took the phone from the false bottom of my leather bag. It looked like any other phone, but it had been built for one number only, and I dialed it from memory. It rang once."Boss." Silas picked up fast, as he always did. Eleven years, and he had never once let it ring twice."The photo of Elena's garage," I said. "Where was it taken from?""The parking structure across the street, third level, northeast corner. My men found the spot twenty minutes ago. The shooter was gone, but he left a cigarette butt and a bad attitude.""He had a camera with a long lens and no one stopped him.""Her building g

Elena's POVBy evening, I had made up my mind about the photograph.Dante had read Daniel's note in my office, and all he had said was that he would look into it. I told him I didn't want to talk about it, and I meant that. Daniel was my mess, not his, and I refused to hand my past to a man who kept showing up with answers I never asked for.So I did what I always did when something scares me or shocked me. I took it home and stared at it for no reason. The photo lay on the kitchen island next to my laptop. I had been glaring at it for so long that the two people in the penthouse garage no longer looked real. They were just a pair of shadows standing a little too close together. The strangest part was how calm Daniel's handwriting looked. Three years ago he had ruined my life with a smirk and a glass of scotch, and now he was back to do it again with a courier and a camera. He had always enjoyed an audience, and I hated that he had found a new way to make me angry. "Are you trying

Elena's POVVictor sat frozen at the head of the long table, his face as pale as fresh paper. He stared down at the stack of stamped financial reports Dante had tossed in front of him, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He tried to speak, tried to gather what was left of his pride, but no words came out.The two senior board members beside him wouldn't even look up from the floor. They had already hidden Dante’s white envelopes deep inside their suit pockets, terrified of what those tax records would do to their lives if anyone else saw them.Slowly, Victor pushed back his chair. He didn't say a word to the room. He couldn't even look Dante in the eye as he practically ran toward the heavy glass doors, his hands shaking as he pulled them open and practically fled into the hall. The remaining board members quickly gathered their papers, muttering rushed excuses before leaving one by one until the room was empty.I sat completely still in my leather chair, keeping m
