Athena woke up to a relaxed evening. This was her third day of vacation and she wanted nothing more but to laze around all day and enjoy the local cuisine. She knew that a month of rest would take her back to factory settings and maybe change her perception of certain things.

Like a lioness that was waking up from a nap after a sumptuous meal, she slowly walked to the window and opened it, taking in the early evening view. As she looked up at the cloudless sky, gazing at the twinkling stars, she thought of a long time ago when her life was carefree and full of laughter. The nearby houses were already lit, and children could be heard playing in the streets.

Being a private investigator was beginning to take a toll on her and the last case made her restless for change. She had taken this vacation in a remote village so that she could have some reflection time and also focus on her training that had taken a back seat.

A family had recruited her services to investigate the disappearance o

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   A TINY EMBER OF STRENGTH

The next few days passed in a blur of restless waiting for Dante. He paced his apartment, the burner phone he’d found on the street after the confrontation with Lizbeth sitting on his coffee table, a constant reminder of the volatile encounter. He’d shown it to Ben and Mike, who immediately recognized it as a burner. The implications were clear: Lizbeth was involved, and she had gone to great lengths to cover her tracks. They'd meticulously scoured the phone, but Lizbeth had done a thorough job; all incriminating messages were deleted. Still, the existence of the phone itself was damning.Professor Mendez's call finally came late Thursday afternoon. "Dante," her voice was calm, but he detected an underlying weariness. "I've spoken with Megan."Dante's heart hammered against his ribs. "Is she okay, Professor? Is she safe?""She's physically on the mend, and she's with her parents in the countryside, which is a good thing," Professor Mendez confirmed. "Emotionally, she's fragile, as y

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   I KNOW SHE DID IT

The sun began its slow descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The air grew cooler, carrying the earthy scent of the countryside indoors. Megan's parents, having finished their chores, joined them on the porch. Her mother carried a tray with steaming mugs of herbal tea, while her father settled into his favorite rocking chair, a comfortable silence falling over them."How are you feeling, sweetheart?" her mother asked, her voice soft, as she handed Megan a mug.Megan took a deep breath, the warmth of the mug seeping into her hands. "A little better, Mom. Queen's been… a huge help." She glanced at Queen, a grateful smile on her face. Her father nodded. "Queen, we can't thank you enough for coming. It means the world to us to see Megan smile again.""Of course," Queen replied, a genuine warmth in her voice. "Megan's my best friend. I wouldn't be anywhere else.""We've been talking a lot," Megan began, her voice gaining a little more strength. "About… everything." She l

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   DON'T LET FEAR WIN

The crisp country air, thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, filled Megan’s lungs. It was a stark contrast to the city's relentless exhaust, and for the first time in weeks, she felt a fragile sense of peace. Her parents’ home, a sprawling farmhouse nestled amidst rolling green hills, was a sanctuary. Here, the terrifying echoes of the attack seemed distant, muted by the chirping of cicadas and the gentle rustle of leaves. But even in this idyllic setting, her mind was a tempest. The physical wounds were slowly mending, but the emotional scars ran deep, twisting her thoughts into a Gordian knot of fear, confusion, and a lingering ache for what was lost.Dante. His name was a ghost on her tongue. The thought of him brought a painful cocktail of emotions – the warmth of shared laughter, the comfort of his presence, and the crushing guilt that perhaps, in some inexplicable way, her relationship with him had made her a target. Should she even see him again? Could they ever trul

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   A GENUINE SHIVER OF FEAR

Dante stared at the address on the leave of absence pass, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. The urge to immediately go to Megan was overwhelming, a primal need to ensure her safety and try to make amends. But the logical part of his brain, the part that had watched her withdraw and suffer, cautioned against it. What if his sudden appearance only intensified her pain, making her feel even more cornered? He paced the confines of his apartment, the crumpled paper clutched in his hand. The address was for a remote village, a place where peace and quiet would be in abundance, far removed from the traumatic memories of campus. It made sense that she would seek solace there. But for him to intrude on that fragile peace felt… wrong. He pictured Megan's face, the haunted look in her eyes after the attack. She needed to heal, not to be confronted by the very person who, however unintentionally, had been a catalyst in her recent suffering. Yet, the unspoken words between them, the

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   A DESPERATE PLEA AND A GLIMMER OF HOPE

The city’s relentless pulse did little to soothe Dante's escalating panic. Megan was gone. His frantic search across campus had yielded nothing but an echoing silence where her vibrant presence once had been. The thought of never seeing her again, the unspoken words and the chance to mend what was broken, gnawed at him. With a desperate hope flickering within him, he made his way to the campus dean’s office. The dean, a man known for his strict adherence to university protocol, listened patiently as Dante, trying to keep his voice steady, explained Megan's abrupt departure. "I need to see a copy of Megan's leave of absence pass," Dante requested, his voice laced with urgency. He knew the university had a stringent policy: for security purposes, any student taking leave had to file a pass detailing their reasons and, crucially, their temporary address. The dean, however, remained unmoved. "Dante," he began, his tone firm but not unkind, "student confidentiality is paramount. I cann

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   HER FAMILY IS TOO POWERFUL

The tranquil hum of the countryside, a stark contrast to the city's ceaseless thrum, did little to quell the shock that rippled through Megan's parents as their daughter, whom they had sent off to the bustling city campus with such high hopes, returned home bruised and withdrawn. The sight of their vibrant child, diminished and fragile, ignited a furious desire to sue the university, to demand accountability for the harm inflicted upon her. However, Queen, with her calm demeanor and steady voice, carefully filled them in on the harrowing events. She recounted the attack, the text on Megan's phone that lured her out of her hostel room which is now missing from her phone and suspicion that Dante might be the reason why Megan was attacked. While the details were horrific, Queen assured them that the police were actively working on the case, a fragile promise that offered a sliver of solace amidst their anger and concern. "Megan is in a relationship?" Megan's Dad asked as he turned to
