Elena stayed at the hospital longer than she should have.

She told herself it was just to make sure Gabriel was truly okay. That the doctors hadn't missed anything. That someone responsible needed to sign his discharge papers since he was being stubborn about everything.

But the truth was simpler and more complicated: she couldn't seem to walk away from him.

"You should go home," Gabriel said softly, watching her from the hospital bed. "It's late."

"I will. Soon." Elena adjusted the blanket over him, avoiding his gaze. "The doctor said they want to keep you overnight for observation. Concussion protocol."

"I told them I'm fine."

"And I told them you're a terrible patient who never follows medical advice." She finally met his eyes. "Stay the night, Gabriel. Please."

Something flickered across his face, surprise, maybe, that she cared enough to argue. "Only if you promise to go home and get some rest."

"Deal."

But as she gathered her purse and coat, Gabriel caught her wrist gently. "Ele

Twenty minutes later, Elena was sitting in the mall's management office, sipping tea with Mr. Peterson, the plaza's general manager."I'm so sorry about that incident, Miss Sterling," he was saying, wringing his hands nervously. "If we'd known there was a problem sooner…""It's fine, Mr. Peterson. Really." Elena set down her teacup. "I didn't come here to cause trouble. I just needed to do some shopping and ran into someone from my past.""Still, we'll make sure Ms. Chen doesn't return to the property. And if there's anything we can do to make your visit more pleasant…""Actually," Elena said thoughtfully, "there is one thing. Do you have a list of all the stores and restaurants in the plaza?"Mr. Peterson looked puzzled but pulled up the information on his computer. "Of course. Is there something specific you're looking for?"Elena scanned the list, an idea forming. "I'd like to know which establishments are struggling. Which ones are behind on rent or having financial difficulties."

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER NINETEEN: COLLISION COURSE

Elena needed to get out of the house. After three days of hiding in her room, alternating between tears and anger, Nathaniel had finally convinced her that fresh air and a change of scenery would do her good."You can't hibernate forever," he'd said that morning. "The babies need you to take care of yourself. And that includes occasionally leaving the estate."So Elena found herself at Meridian Plaza, one of the city's most upscale shopping centers. She wasn't really looking for anything in particular, just needed to be somewhere that wasn't her bedroom, somewhere she couldn't obsess over Gabriel's last words to her.I love you. Whether you believe it or not... it's true."Stop it," Elena muttered to herself, pausing in front of a boutique window. "You don't care what he said. You don't care about him at all."She was getting better at the lie. Almost believed it sometimes.Elena pushed into the boutique, thinking maybe some new clothes would help. Most of her wardrobe was from her ma

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: WALLS UP

Elena stared at her phone, Gabriel's name glowing on the screen with yet another incoming call. She let it go to voicemail. Again. This was the fourth call today. The second bouquet of flowers had arrived this morning. And yesterday, Margaret had emailed to say Gabriel wanted to schedule a time to "talk properly.""No," Elena said aloud to her empty room. "Absolutely not."She was done. Done with the flowers, done with the messages, done with the way he was slowly, methodically trying to work his way back into her life. And she was especially done with those dreams that made her wake up aching and confused, her body betraying everything her mind knew to be true.Gabriel Thorne didn't love her. He never had.And she wasn't going to let him pretend otherwise just because his ego couldn't handle being the one left behind.Elena's phone buzzed with a text.Gabriel: Elena, please. I just want to talk. Five minutes. That's all I'm asking. Her fingers flew across the keyboard before she coul

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: CRACKS IN THE ARMOR

The pregnancy was becoming harder to hide.At eight weeks, Elena's body was beginning to change in subtle but noticeable ways. Her breasts were fuller, more sensitive. Her waist was starting to thicken slightly, though she could still hide it with loose clothing. But it was the constant exhaustion and morning sickness that were the real problem."You need to take better care of yourself," Nathaniel scolded one morning after finding Elena hunched over the toilet for the third time. "This stress isn't good for you or the babies.""I'm fine," Elena lied, wiping her mouth with a shaky hand."You're not fine. You barely eat, you don't sleep, and you've lost weight instead of gaining it.""The morning sickness—""Is made worse by stress," Nathaniel finished. "Elena, I know you're trying to be strong, but you're going to make yourself sick."Elena knew he was right. But every time she tried to relax, her mind went straight to Gabriel. To the dreams that plagued her nights. To the growing cer

The next morning, Elena woke feeling like she'd barely slept at all.The dream lingered in her consciousness, vivid and troubling. She could still feel the ghost of Gabriel's touch on her skin, the memory of pleasure making her core clench with renewed need."This is ridiculous," she muttered to herself as she showered. "He's just a man. You've gone without sex before."But even as she said it, Elena knew it was a lie.Gabriel wasn't just any man. He was her man—or had been, once. And her body apparently hadn't gotten the memo about the separation.Dressed in yoga pants and an oversized sweater, Elena made her way downstairs. She needed coffee. And maybe to bang her head against a wall until the memories of that dream finally faded.Nathaniel was in the kitchen, making breakfast."Morning," he said cheerfully. "You look terrible.""Thanks," Elena said dryly, pouring herself a cup of decaf coffee. Her doctor had said one cup a day was fine during pregnancy. "I didn't sleep well.""Nigh
