When I got home. I laid on my bed and regretted going out in the first place. Tears filled my eyes.

Later at night. I sat on the edge of my bed with the small lamp burning low, still feeling the bruises from the duel. Every part of me ached, but the worst pain was the quiet humiliation that refused to leave.

A soft knock came at the window.

I turned quickly. Rhett stood outside in the dark. I opened the window and he climbed in without a sound, closing it behind him.

Marcus and his team arrived moments later. He pushed through the gathering and stepped forward. “Elder, that animal belongs to our team.” I turned towards him. “You weren’t there when I killed it.” “We were assigned as one team. Anything found during the hunt belongs to all of us.” The elder raised a hand. “Both of you will explain yourselves.” Marcus spoke first. He claimed I had left the team without permission and that they had been forced to search for me. He left out the part where they had mocked me, refused to follow the tracks and tried to take the animal by force. When he finished, the elder looked at me. “Is that true?” “I did leave the team,” I admitted. “But I didn’t abandon them. I found fresh tracks and asked them to follow. Marcus refused. They told me to go alone and said they wouldn’t come looking for me.” “That is a lie,” Marcus snapped. Rowan stepped forward. “I can confirm that he told her to go on alone. I heard him.” Rhett also spoke. “I found them sur

I should have been afraid. A part of me was. But the strange strength that had risen inside me while fighting the wolf had not completely disappeared. I could still feel it beneath my skin, waiting. “No,” I said. Marcus narrowed his eyes. “You think you can fight all of us?” “I don’t want to fight anyone. Just let me pass.” “Then leave the wolf.” I shook my head. For one brief moment, I wondered whether I should call for help. My horn was still hanging from my belt, but reaching for it would mean taking one hand off the animal. Marcus noticed my hesitation and smiled as if he had already won completely. He gave a short signal, and the others moved closer. I tightened my hands around the animal, refusing to step back. They were about to attack when a furious growl rolled through the trees. All four wolves turned. Rowan came charging towards us, his eyes fixed on Marcus and the others, anger written across his face. He came to a stop between me and Marcus, his chest rising as

I turned sharply, raising my knife. A huge wolf stepped out from behind the trees. Its dark fur stood along its back, and its yellow eyes fixed on me. Saliva hung from its open jaws. It was larger than any wild animal I had ever seen, and the low growl coming from its throat made my stomach tighten. I took a step back. The wolf moved forward. “Stay away,” I whispered, though I knew it wouldn’t understand. It lowered its head and bared its teeth. I turned to run, but it sprang across my path and landed between me and the trail. I stumbled backwards, nearly falling over a root. There was nowhere to go. I raised my knife with both hands. It suddenly looked very small against the creature standing before me. I had no wolf. No claws. No strength like the other members of the pack. If that thing attacked me, I had no idea how I would survive. The wolf growled again. “Please,” I muttered, taking another step back. It lunged. I threw myself aside. Its teeth snapped shut where my

The horn sounded again, and the contestants gathered before the elders.I stood with my assigned team, trying not to show how uncomfortable I felt. There were four wolves besides me. I recognised two of them from the training grounds, but neither had ever spoken to me kindly. One of them, a broad-shouldered warrior named Marcus, looked me up and down.“So they really put you with us?”I tightened my grip on my hunting knife. “It seems so.”He exchanged a look with the others. “Try not to slow us down, wolfless girl.”“I’ll do my best.”“That might not be enough.”Before I could answer, the elder overseeing the contest stepped forward. He explained the rules once more. Each team would enter a marked section of the forest and search for an animal. The team that returned with the most valuable catch before sunset would win. No one was to cross into another team’s territory, and anyone who encountered danger had to sound their horn.“Stay together,” the elder warned. “The forest is not a

I had barely returned home when the sound of drums rolled across the pack grounds.I stopped at the doorway, my bag still waiting beside my bed. The drums were not part of the usual evening calls. They were followed by the voices of warriors gathering near the training grounds.“What is happening?” I asked my mother as she came out of the kitchen.“An announcement,” she replied. “The Alpha has called everyone to the grounds.”“I’m not going.”She looked at me. “You haven’t even heard what it is.”“I don’t need to. I have other things to do.”Her eyes moved towards my room. She had noticed the bag, but she hadn’t asked about it. I wasn’t ready to explain my plans, especially when I knew she would try to stop me.“Nora, you cannot keep hiding from everyone,” she said.“I’m not hiding. I’m leaving.”Her face changed. “We will talk about that later. For now, go and hear the announcement.”“Why should I? They have made it clear they don’t want me here.”“Then don’t give them another reason

Rhett’s hand remained around Cassia’s wrist for another second before he finally released her.Cassia let go of my arm at the same time. I stepped away, rubbing the place where her fingers had dug into my skin.“Have you lost your mind?” Cassia demanded, staring at Rhett. He ignored her and looked at me. “Nora, wait. I need to explain.”“I don’t want to hear it.”“You don’t understand what happened.”“I understand enough.” I looked at him, keeping my voice steady. “You stood beside her during the ceremony and accepted her as your mate. You don’t get to defend me now and expect me to forget that.”His expression tightened. “I never said that.”“Then stop deciding when you want to care about me.”“Nora, please. I was only trying to—”“Don’t.” I raised a hand. “I don’t need you to defend me, Rhett. I can handle Cassia myself.”He took a step towards me, but I moved back.“Just give me a chance to explain.”“Explain what? That you had no choice? That you did it for the pack? I’ve heard it
