The man near the shuttered stall noticed them a heartbeat too late, his eyes flicking toward Adrian's approach just as Lyra circled wide to cut off any path toward the market's northern exit.

He ran anyway, shoving through a startled vendor's cart of early vegetables, scattering onions and turnips across the cobblestones as he sprinted toward a narrow alley between two shuttered shops.

"Stop him," Adrian shouted, already closing the distance.

Lyra reached the alley first, cutting through a gap

The tremor grew stronger, rolling through the shrine in slow, deliberate waves, dust sifting down from the ancient ceiling in a fine, pale rain. Torches guttered against a wind that seemed to rise from nowhere, curling through the chamber like something searching for a way out that had not yet been opened. The woman's composed expression finally cracked entirely, replaced by something Lyra hadn't expected to ever see on features that had witnessed centuries pass without visible strain."That should not be happening yet," she said, her voice sharper now, urgent in a way it hadn't been through the entire earlier confrontation. "Not this soon. Not without the Turning properly completed.""What's happening," Adrian demanded, steadying himself against the shifting floor."The binding beneath this shrine has held for longer than either of your bloodlines have existed," the woman said. "It requires constant, careful maintenance, drawn from the very ceremonies the Vigil has performed for gene

The light struck before any of them could move, and Lyra felt it hit her chest like a physical weight, driving the breath from her lungs and pinning her feet to the stone floor as though the ground itself had reached up to hold her still.Adrian struggled beside her, his own body caught in the same binding glow, and Voss dropped to one knee, gasping, her decades of training clearly no match for whatever power the woman commanded so effortlessly."You should be honored," the woman said, circling them slowly, unhurried despite the chaos she had just unleashed. "Very few have ever stood in this chamber and lived long enough to describe it afterward."Lyra fought against the light's grip, reaching inward for the warmth beneath her ribs, and found it there immediately, steady and certain, refusing to be smothered even under this much pressure."You're not stronger than truth," Lyra said, forcing the words out despite the weight crushing against her chest. "Whatever you are, however long yo

They left Kael and Nessa at the ridge just after dawn, the parting brief and tense in the way partings tend to be when no one wants to say aloud how uncertain the return actually feels."Three days," Adrian said. "If we haven't returned by then, assume the worst and act accordingly.""I'd rather not plan for the worst before you've even left," Kael said, though his usual easy humor had gone entirely flat."Plan for it anyway," Voss said. "It's the only way to make certain the worst doesn't also cost you your own lives trying to rescue people who are already beyond saving."Nessa embraced Lyra briefly, her weathered hands steady despite the fear plain in her eyes. "Trust yourself. Whatever waits down there, you've already survived more than it should reasonably expect you to."They descended into the valley along a narrow trail cut directly into the mountainside, the path so tight in places that they were forced to move single file, one hand pressed against cold stone for balance, the

They left the capital five days later, once Torren had confirmed the palace could hold steady without Adrian present and Kael had gathered fresh supplies suited to mountain travel rather than open road. The city felt strangely quiet as they rode out through its gates, autumn's chill already settling over rooftops that had witnessed more upheaval in the past months than most kingdoms saw in a generation. The party was smaller this time, Adrian, Lyra, Kael, Nessa, and Voss, with Torren remaining behind to manage the council and keep watch over the imprisoned uncle, and Mira staying close to the capital to help coordinate word between the territories should anything go wrong."The terrain alone will slow us considerably," Kael said, studying the map spread across their final planning table before departure. "Even without whatever protections the shrine itself carries, the mountains between Frostveil and Shadowmere have never been kind to travelers who don't know them well.""Then it's fo

"The position transferred," his uncle said, his voice quieter now, the last of his old pride finally worn away by the weight of confession. "Before the council vote against you failed. I suspected exposure was coming, and the charter is explicit on this point. A compromised holder must be replaced before capture, not after."Adrian went very still. "You mean you're not the Second Voice anymore.""I haven't been for months," his uncle said. "Which is precisely why everything Voss and the girl have encountered since then, the arrow at the ruined chapel, the near attendance at the Turning, none of it came from me. I've been sitting in this cell entirely powerless to affect any of it, watching the consequences of decisions I made unfold from behind bars I built for myself the moment I chose exposure over silence."Lyra felt something cold settle in her chest. "Then who.""I don't know," his uncle admitted. "The charter is deliberate about that as well. Transfer occurs through a private ce

Adrian remembered it clearly once he allowed himself to think back carefully enough, the exact moment three months ago when his uncle had lied to his face and, for the first time in thirty years, he had heard nothing at all beneath the words."You told me you had no idea where I'd gone," Adrian said, standing before the cell where his uncle had remained since the council chamber's collapse. "I've turned that moment over in my mind more times than I can count since finding that charter. I should have heard the lie clearly. Instead I heard nothing. Not truth. Not deception. Simply silence where an answer should have been."His uncle sat on the narrow cot, thinner than before, though his composure had returned somewhat during his confinement, the desperate fear of that final council session replaced by something colder, more resigned."I don't know what you're referring to," he said.Lyra stepped forward, focusing carefully on his voice, reaching for the same sense that had exposed Bella
