EMILI

I didn’t answer immediately. Not because I didn’t remember the name, but because I couldn’t get enough air. My mouth was full of blood, my wrists raw, and my body hurt so badly that every breath felt like a knife between my ribs.

“They said her name was Ivanna,” I managed to say. “I don’t know who she is.”

The Lican let out a growl that made the ground vibrate beneath my knees. He turned toward the mangled bodies around us as if considering killing them all over again.

I remained on the g

ALARICMy mood was worse than ever—and Emili and Silas were the reason. My wolf growled when she walked into the office. Low, rough—the kind of growl it reserved for moments when it wanted to rip someone’s throat out, but the rational part of my brain still held the leash.“Alaric, do you have a minute? Silas found something in the altar photos.”I had all the minutes in the world for her. But I also had a working nose—and a wolf that was starting to keep count of how often my woman walked out of that damned library smelling like my advisor.“Come in,” I said.Silas stepped in behind her. Pale, slow, moving with that forced human gait that stirred a kind of pity in me I would never admit to his face. The warlock’s spell had left him without his wolf, and though the healer said he’d recover, every day without shifting cost him a piece of his sanity. I could see it in his eyes—the quiet desperation of a Lycan caged inside a body that no longer obeyed. But pity didn’t stop me from notici

  • THE ALPHA KING'S MAID   Chapter 49: Coordinates

EMILISilas looked like a corpse refusing to cooperate with death.Pale, hollow-eyed, moving through the library with the stiffness of an arthritic old man. The warlock’s spell had severed his connection to his wolf, and he hadn’t been able to shift for days. For a Lycan, that was like going deaf: technically you’re still alive, but a fundamental part of you has stopped working.“Before you ask—no, I still can’t shift. Yes, I feel like shit. And no, I don’t want to talk about it,” he said without looking up from the table as he pulled a leather envelope from beneath a book. “Look at this.”Five photographs. He spread them out on the table with fingers that still trembled. Photos of the greenhouse altar, taken on his phone the night everything went to hell. Blurry, poorly lit—but readable. At least for me.I leaned over the table, putting on that focused expression I always used when Silas showed me Dark Language inscriptions. The “how interesting, I don’t understand a thing” face—when

EMILIThe first blow knocked me flat on my back.I didn’t see it coming. One second I was standing in front of Lyra in the forest clearing, fists up the way she’d taught me, feet planted in the stance she’d made me repeat twenty times before we even started, and the next I was staring at the treetops from the ground with the taste of grass in my mouth and a throbbing pain in my left shoulder.“Dead,” Lyra said, standing over me without offering a hand. “A vampire would’ve torn your throat out before your ass hit the ground. Get up.”I got up.The second blow sent me sideways.“Dead again. Don’t watch my hands—watch my body. The strike starts in the hip, not the fist. Get up.”I got up.The third was a leg sweep that left me sitting in the mud with my dignity right beside me. Lyra hadn’t even broken a sweat. I looked like roadkill.“Emili, you can’t fight if you stand there waiting to be hit. You have to move. Always. A moving target survives. A still one is meat.”“I am moving.”“You’

  • THE ALPHA KING'S MAID   Chapter 47: Rats and Kings

Soren arrived at the Vampire King’s castle to deliver a report—and they made him wait six hours.Six hours sitting on a black stone bench, in a windowless corridor where the cold seeped into the marrow and blue-flamed torches gave off no warmth. The King’s guards passed by every so often, looked at him the way one looks at an insect that slipped in through a crack in the door, and kept walking.Soren didn’t move. Didn’t complain. Didn’t ask for water, food, or a damn blanket. Because he understood exactly what they were doing: measuring him. A sorcerer who shows up uninvited at the Vampire King’s castle, asking for a direct audience and bypassing a General, has exactly two options. He’s either insane—or he has something worth more than his life. The six hours were meant to determine which. On the seventh hour, the guard with the scar on his jaw returned.“The King will see you now.”They led him through three more corridors, all identical, all designed to disorient. But Soren had memo

  • THE ALPHA KING'S MAID   Chapter 46: Getting to Know My Beast

**EMILI**I woke with the taste of blood in my mouth and Alaric coiled around me like a ninety-kilo possessive serpent. His arm circled my waist with that anchor-like firmness I already knew—the kind that said *“I almost lost you, and now I’m not letting go, not even to use the bathroom.”* His breathing was deep and steady against the back of my neck, but the tension in his muscles gave him away. He wasn’t fully asleep. He was watching. Even asleep, he was watching.I stayed still. Not because of him—because of me. Because in that space between sleep and wakefulness, before reality fully settled, I tried to remember. The vampires surrounding us in the ravine. Silas going down from the witch’s spell. The four of them closing in on me. The silver chain. And then…Nothing.Darkness. That familiar void that swallowed me every time the shadow took control. Like a clean cut in a film: one frame I’m terrified against a rock wall, and the next I’m here, in my bed, with Alaric’s blood on my li

**ALARIC**The mark woke me.Not with pain. With emptiness. As if someone had reached into my chest and ripped out something essential, leaving behind a cold hollow that pulsed with every heartbeat. One moment I was in my study reviewing territorial agreements with the northern alphas, and the next I was on my feet, chair overturned, papers flying, eyes red, my Lycan howling a single word inside my skull.*Emili.*I didn’t need more. I didn’t wait for explanations. I didn’t give rational orders. I burst out of the study fast enough to crack the doorframe, took the stairs shifting mid-stride, and tore through the mansion’s front door in full Lycan form, splintering the wood like cardboard.Damián caught up to me before I reached the forest. Enzo and the twins joined seconds later, alerted by the mental link we shared. I didn’t ask who was available. I ran—and those who could keep up did.The mark guided me. Not like a map, but like an emotional compass pulling at my sternum toward the

EMILIThe first thing I did when I got out of the car was assess the damage. The three armored trucks that had brought us here were, in technical terms, destroyed. The first had its hood crushed by the tree trunk Alaric had used as a projectile against a vampire. The second—ours—had a cracked winds

**EMILI**We weren’t finished.I knew it from the way Alaric lifted me off the ruined desk: unhurried, not rough, but with that firmness that said *“this isn’t over — it just changed settings.”* He carried me as if I weighed nothing, my back against his chest, his arms wrapped around my waist, and

**ALARIC**We had been back at the mansion for two days, and something didn’t add up.It wasn’t anything big. Not a red alarm or a sign of danger. It was a hum. A dull irritation, like a splinter lodged somewhere you can’t scratch. And that splinter had a name and a surname: Silas. My most loyal gu
