"Any number of times you'd like," she promised, reaching down to take the book from her lap. "But let's get the story done first, okay?"

Alexander was slightly undersized for his age but was two inches taller in the past six months, so she knew for sure that a growth spurt was on the horizon. He had been born with downy blond hair that had darkened as he aged, but not nearly so dark as her own, and his eyes were the deep, familiar blue of his father's. She did not see Luthor when she looked at Alexander, though, only her sweet little man. However, the traces of his father's features were there in his face, and she knew they would only become more defined as he aged.

Regardless of how large of an asshole Luthor was, she couldn't even begin to deny he was attractive. But if she had anything to say about it, good looks were all the Tenzclaw Alpha Alexander would inherit. All the toxic, misogynistic baggage of pack life weren't going to find their way into her house if she had anything to say about it.

As Alexander eventually drifted off to sleep, she brushed the hair out of his forehead and kissed his cheek gently, her heart bursting with love. She'd given up everything to ensure Alexander's safety, and she'd do it a million times over if she had to.

When she finally emerged from the room and shut the door behind her, leaving it ajar to allow the hall light to stream in, the pain in her stomach intensified. It was a dull ache accompanied by that unnerving feeling of being watched. Though she longed for a hot shower that didn't get interrupted and a cup of cocoa in front of the television, she hadn't lost quite all of her instincts since leaving the Tenzclaw pack, and they were screaming at her to go and investigate. She'd been able to let the worries drop when they were vague, but now that they were getting stronger by the minute, she knew she couldn't ignore them much longer.

She took one step, and then another, down the hall, before the feeling intensified again. It was so intense, so insistent, that it left her winded.

There, at the fringes of her senses, she could have sworn she sensed Luthor Michaels. No, there was no chance in hell it could be him. It had been over seven years since she'd fled, so he should have forgotten about her by now.

No sooner had the sensation swept over her than it had gone, but there was no chance of her being able to relax until she was sure she must have been imagining things. She glanced rearward at the empty house, small enough so that she could see the entirety of it with a single glance, and opened the front door warily. It was chilly but she was perspiring from adrenaline as she slowly looked around, trying to sense if someone was present.

It was a quiet night, the air cool and heavy with the moisture of the nearby ocean and the oncoming rain. Her senses absorbed the night sounds, the chirping of crickets, and the soft sound of the wind through the trees. She could neither smell nor hear anyone, yet it was not only her wolf senses that were unsettling her.

She turned on the porch light with a shaking hand and stepped out, shutting the door behind her. A quick look revealed nothing, but the feeling would not leave, a dull, aching pain in the pit of her belly. She reached out with the once-strange, now familiar magic that had stirred in her after her one night with Luthor, feeling the land around her cottage. Finding out she had been a witch wasn't shocking—it ran in the blood—but since she'd had the magic for seven years, it felt like an old friend when it came to her.

Some residual of magic at the edge of her property and nothing more. It was so faint she couldn't even tell if it was a witch or a shifter.

Probably just a stray passerby. A neighbor you didn't know wasn't human, that's all, she tried to tell herself…But she wasn't very convincing.

After a second lap around her home, she still couldn't make out anything, even if the pain in her belly hadn't let up. Sighing, she supposed the thing to do would be to lock all the doors and try to get some sleep.

"I must be going crazy," she murmured. "Or maybe it's just stress."

But as she headed back to the door, she suddenly sensed the magic again, this time even closer. It was so powerful that she had no doubt what the source was. It hit her over the head like a hammer, and it was all she could do not to fall to her knees and cower.

It was her Alpha.

No, no, no, no. He couldn't be here, could he?

Oh shit. He'd come for her, just as she'd feared. She'd become such a master of hiding, and they'd tried so hard to cover their tracks. How could it be that he'd found them now, after all these years? She'd known it was a risk that Luthor would come for her, but not yet. Not until her little Alexander was older, shielded from the nastiness of the pack politics and his father's cruelty.

The dawn broke the horizon as they approached Yellow Pack, and though Sharon had always protested that she didn't want to go home, she still crept forward with a keen sense of anticipation as the city materialized in view. She was beautiful like that, all tight in her body and her face aglow, her dark eyes drinking in the familiar landscape. She had grown up since last being in the city, and so had the city. There were two packs in the beach town—Luthor's pack, the Tenzclaw, and the Bakin pack led by Klaus Lots. Klaus had allied with Luthor's father and kept it strong and intact when Luthor took over as leader. While Luthor did not like living quarters with another dominating Alpha like Klaus, the town was big enough that it was not a problem. No one but Luthor's Beta, Mark Stye, his council, and a few of the higher-ranking pack members even knew he was bringing Sharon and Alexander home. The right thing to do would have been to tell her parents, but they'd moved four years earlier. Lut

A bitter pain was welling up her throat. "I didn't want to be one of your Omegas you kept in reserve because I gave you your son. And I sure as hell did not want my son being used in your Alpha pack political games."Luthor laughed cruelly, "I'm the Alpha, Sharon, and I will do with my son what I want."Her response was like a whip crack, "Like hell you will."The stench of his rage filled the air, an undertone of ozone to it. "You don't speak to me like that. Not if you don't want me to discipline you right here, right now."The memory from seven years ago passed through her head like a specter, a specter that was as thrilling as it was frightening. He could do anything to her that he wanted to. Her body still craved him, and she hated that."Punish me however you'd like, Luthor, I don't care."He took a deep breath, and as if he could sense all the ways he was impacting her, some of his anger seeped away into something more.personal. It wasn't exactly the best first impression to make, but at least he hadn't awakened. He'd had only fractions of a second to react, but all the signs were out there in front of him: the dark clothing, the packed backpack, the attempts at stealth—Sharon was attempting to escape with his son.Again.Fury welled up in him from the never-drying well of it in his chest, and with not the slightest hesitation, he sprinted off. Sharon did too, leaping into motion like a gazelle, but he was taller and was not encumbered, so he reached the driver's side door first. She let out a little cry of vexation and tried to push him off the car, overbalanced by holding up their son. It was so futile that he laughed, which only infuriated her more. She wasn't leaving. He had won."Liar," he told her, more amused than enraged now that he'd established the upper hand. "Now that I know I can't trust you, I'm leaving you no choice, Sharon. Get in the goddamn car, or I'll take that pup from your arms and leave

"I'm fine," she said, "now, if you please, I have some errands to run." She sidled around him and pushed open the front door, gesturing for him to leave. "Thank you for dropping by to check on me, but I don't need your help."He looked at her in surprise for a moment before producing his best, most lupine smile. "Naturally not. You're doing fine on your own." He stood there for a second, his eyes scanning the house, and Sharon stood stock still. They both know it wasn't her house. It was only where she could hole up. "Don't worry, though. Your secret is safe with me," Sharon started to complain, but he put up a hand to stop her. "I'm not here to fight you."It appeared she was going to fight him anyway, and he sensed the refusal coiling in her throat. But instead of that, she sighed, and tension dissipated from her body. "Please just leave, then."He was half-disappointed that she was going to let him off so soon, but he didn't feel like pushing it. She looked as if she was about to b

That would have been the end of it, if she hadn't had a baby nine months later. She'd kept to herself all those years, not wanting anyone to see her pregnant, and by the time she gave birth, he'd almost had been able to put her out of his mind.Nearly.He'd been furious. Even if he had spoken to Sharon or not, she was his pack, and therefore, she was his. That in itself made her son, their son, his son. The fact that she'd hid the fact that she was pregnant from him would make him angry. He planned to confront her, to force her and the child to live in his home where he could witness his boy being raised the way he wanted him to be, but when he went to take her back, she was gone.Sharon gave birth to a baby and was so desperate to be free of him and the Tenzclaw pack that she left the city the following day. Had he been a better man, he would have been humiliated that she had sunk so low, but he wasn't. He still isn't a better man; he's an Alpha, and the hurt of realizing that she th
