I found Carlos in the main hall. He was looking at one of the paintings on the wall, his hands clasped behind his back.

"Carlos," I said, walking up to him. "We need to talk."

He turned to me with a smile. "Good morning. Did you sleep well?"

"No, I didn't." I took his arm and led him to a quiet corner. "It's about Arlene."

His smile faded. "What about her?"

I took a deep breath. "She said things to me. In the garden. Things that made me uncomfortable."

"What kind of things?"

"She said I was feeding on your kindness. That what you feel for me is just pity, not love." The words hurt to say out loud. "She said she wouldn't let you leave this time."

Carlos was quiet for a moment. Then he shook his head.

"Amelia, Arlene jokes around sometimes. She doesn't mean anything by it."

"This wasn't joking, Carlos. She was serious…"

"You're reading too much into it," he said, reaching for my hands. "Arlene and I have known each other for years. She has a strange sense of humor, but she's h

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   The hunt begins

My heart raced so fast I thought Lars would hear it from wherever he was. The key bit into my palm, a tiny shard of hope wrapped in cold metal. My wrists ached, raw flesh torn open by silver, but pain meant nothing now. I had a way out. With trembling hands, I shoved the key into the lock binding my chains. It scraped, refused at first, but then—click. One cuff fell open, clattering against the stone floor. I bit back a sob of relief as I freed the other, blood rushing into my stiff arms.I was free. But freedom in a cage meant nothing if I couldn’t get past the door.I crept forward, slipping the key into the lock. My ears strained for footsteps, breath shallow. The tumblers groaned—then another click. The door gave way with a soft creak.Every instinct screamed at me to run, but I forced myself to move carefully down the narrow corridor. The walls stank of damp and iron, torchlight flickering across mossy stone. Each shadow looked like it wanted to swallow me.Then I heard it. Voice

The silver chains cut into my wrists. Blood ran down my arms, but I kept pulling. I had to get out of here."Let me out!" I screamed at the empty room. "Let me out!"Nobody answered. I could only hear my own breathing and the chains scraping against the wall.My wrists hurt badly. My shoulders ached. But I kept pulling at the chains. They had to break.Blood dripped on the floor. I felt dizzy. The room started spinning around me.Then everything went dark. When I opened my eyes, I was somewhere else. I stood in a field full of flowers. The sun was warm on my face. A gentle wind blew through the grass."Amelia."I turned around. My heart jumped. Mia was walking toward me through the flowers. "Mia!" I ran to her and hugged her tight. She felt real in my arms. "Oh, Mia, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry for saying you were selfish, please don't leave me again."She hugged me back. "It's okay, Amelia. It's okay."I pulled back to look at her face. Tears ran down my cheeks. "I understand now."Mia

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER FIFTY SIX-BOUND

The morning sun cast shadows through the barred window when I heard familiar footsteps echoing down the stone hallway. My heart pounded against my ribs as the heavy key turned in the lock. Lars entered, carrying a breakfast tray as if this was any ordinary morning between us."Good morning, Amelia," he said, setting the wooden tray on the small table with deliberate care. His voice was calm, almost cheerful, as though he hadn't just destroyed my last hope of freedom the night before.I remained seated on the narrow bed, watching him with careful eyes. The iron chains around my ankles clinked softly against each other as I shifted my weight. The metal was cold and heavy."Lars, please," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll be the person you want me to be. I'll stop fighting you, stop trying to escape. Just let me go."He paused in arranging the items on the tray and looked at me. Then he laughed.“Let you go? After all the trouble I've gone through to get you here?" He shook

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE-HOPELESS

A soft knock at my door woke me from restless sleep. "Come in," I called softly.Martha entered carrying a breakfast tray. She looked around the doorway carefully before closing the door behind her. "I brought you some breakfast," she said, setting the tray on the small table by the window.I climbed out of bed and walked over to her."Thank you," I said, watching her face. "Did you... did you think about what we discussed last night?"Martha nodded and pulled a chair closer to the table. "Sit," she whispered. "We need to talk, but we must be quiet."I sat across from her, my hands folded tightly in my lap. Martha's eyes darted to the door again before she leaned closer."I've been working for this pack for twenty-three years," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've cleaned these rooms, served these meals, and heard secrets that I kept to myself all this time."My pulse quickened. Martha's hands trembled as she reached across the table and took mine. "Amelia, Lars is no

I ran back to my room as quietly as I could, my bare feet silent on the cold floor. My heart hammered against my ribs as Lars's words echoed in my mind."I can remake her this time. Bend her to my will properly."The room had never felt so much like a prison cell as it did when I closed it behind me. I pressed my back against the wood and tried to catch my breath. What had I done? What terrible mistake had I made coming here?I paced across the room, my hands shaking. Every luxury was meant to keep me content while Lars molded me into whatever he wanted me to be.I had to leave. Tonight. I didn't know where I would go, but I couldn't stay here another moment. I pulled on my dress and boots as quietly as I could. My hands trembled as I gathered my few belongings. The book about ivory wolves. The map Arlene had given me. I paused at the jewelry box on my dressing table. Hidden beneath the expensive rings and necklaces was Carlos's heart pendant. The one Lars had told me to remove. I

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER FIFTY THREE-THE PERFECT LUNA

I stood before the mirror in my room, adjusting the green dress I had chosen for the celebration. The fabric was soft silk, the color of deep forest leaves. It fit perfectly, hugging my waist before flowing to the floor in gentle waves. The dress was beautiful.I had taken off Carlos's necklace as Lars requested. The absence of the small gold heart against my skin felt like losing a piece of myself. But I needed to be smart. I needed to blend in until I could understand what was really happening here. The cook's warning echoed in my mind: "You should not have returned." But I was here now, and I had to make the best of it. I would play along. Act the part of the submissive Luna until I could gather the information I needed.A soft knock came at my door."Come in," I called.A young servant girl entered with a nervous smile. "Miss Luna, the Alpha is waiting for you at the manor entrance."I nodded and followed her downstairs. My hands smoothed the green silk as we walked through the co
