The last week was different from the first two.

Less learning. More refining. Adaeze pushing me harder and faster and with less patience for almost because almost was not going to be enough in that chamber.

By day sixteen I could shield completely and hold it for an hour without effort.

By day seventeen the directional broadcasting was clean enough that Adaeze said I could walk into a crowded room and not affect a single person in it unless I chose to.

By day eighteen the bond reading was sharp

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   The Cottage

The eastern territory was flat.Wide open land with the forest pulled back from the main pack settlement like it had been deliberately cleared. Everything visible from every angle. No trees crowding the buildings. No shadow and density the way Blackwood territory had. Just open grey sky and flat ground and a pack settlement that sat exposed in the middle of it.The cottage was at the southern edge.A twenty minute drive from the main settlement on a road that got narrower as we went. Adaeze was in the back seat. Dane beside me in the front. Neither of us talking much. The bond was there between us steady and warm and the territory around us felt different from ours. Flatter in the bond sense too. Less layered. The cottage appeared through a gap in a low hedge.Small. Stone. A garden that had been kept up recently which meant she was functioning. Which meant she was managing. Which meant she had not given up even after eight months alone.Good.Dane parked. We got out."Let me go first

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   Monday At Six

Kade was in the kitchen at five fifty.I came down at six and he was already there with coffee and the particular expression of a man who had not slept much but was not going to admit it. His hair was not as organised as usual. His shirt was on correctly but had been put on in a hurry.I said nothing about any of it.Made my tea. Sat at the table.Adaeze came in at exactly six. Looked at Kade. Looked at his coffee."You will not need that," she said. "It dulls the sensitivity during early training. Water only for the first month of morning sessions."Kade looked at his coffee. Then at Adaeze. Then he put the coffee down and got up and filled a glass of water and sat back down with it.Adaeze sat across from him and opened the book and they began.I stayed because Adaeze had said I could and because watching Kade encounter the beginning of something that had been running underneath him his whole life without a name was something I wanted to witness. He was not fast the way I had been f

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   What Adaeze Finds

Kade talked for forty minutes.Adaeze listened the whole time without interrupting. That was her particular gift. The kind of listening that did not perform itself. She just sat and received everything he said and when he finished she was quiet for a moment."Tell me about her," she said. "Your mother. How she described what she felt."Kade looked at his hands."She said it was like standing in a room where everyone was shouting but nobody was making a sound," he said. "She said she could walk into a market and come home needing to sleep for three hours. That she felt other people's moods like weather. Could not separate them from her own." He paused. "She thought something was wrong with her. The pack healer gave her things to calm it but the things made her dull and she hated being dull so she stopped taking them and just. Managed."Adaeze nodded slowly."And you," she said. "Tell me about you."Kade looked up. "I am fine," he said."I know you function well," she said. "That is not

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   The Gathering

Friday evening. The hall filled the way it always filled. People coming in from the grounds and the packhouse and the east wing and finding their usual spots and the particular hum of a pack settling into its collective self before something happened.Kade was near the front. He had been near the front at every gathering since I arrived and I had come to understand this was his particular way of showing up for things that mattered. He showed up early and stood where he could see everything and pretended he was just there by coincidence.Sola was at the back wall.Arms folded.Charlotte was beside me which had not been planned but had simply happened. She had come downstairs when I came downstairs and had fallen into step beside me and neither of us had commented on it.Dane stood at the front. He did not make long speeches. He never had. He said what needed saying and let the room do the rest. Tonight he told the pack what was being built in the east grounds. A training space. For kee

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   The East Building

Adaeze sat with Charlotte for two hours.I left them to it. Went and did the Thursday supply check and checked in with Rhen about the east building and let the morning move without hovering. Whatever Adaeze found she would tell me when she was ready and Charlotte would tell me when she was ready and pushing neither of them would help anything.Rhen took me through the east building at eleven.Old stone. Single large room with high ceilings and two smaller rooms off the back. The roof was sound. The floor needed work. The windows were original and drafty but present. It smelled of dust and disuse and something underneath that was just old stone doing what old stone did when left alone for long enough.I stood in the middle of the main room.Felt the territory around me the way I felt it now, that peripheral bond awareness, and felt the building sitting inside the territory like something that had been waiting for a use that matched it."How long has it been empty," I said."Fifteen yea

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   What Charlotte Notices

She settled in quietly. That was the thing about Charlotte. She did not take up much space. Helped with dishes without being asked. Learned the kitchen schedule in two days and slotted herself into it without disrupting anything.Sola watched her for three days before saying anything and what she said was simply that Charlotte could help with the Thursday supply check if she wanted something to do.Charlotte wanted something to do.She was good at it too. Organised and precise and she caught an error in the linen count on the first Thursday that even I had missed.I noticed Sola noticing that. The pack absorbed her the way healthy packs absorb people who show up and work without drama. No formal introduction. No announcement. Just Charlotte appearing in spaces and doing useful things until she was simply part of how the house ran.Kade was the first to properly talk to her.He found her in the east corridor on the fourth day and introduced himself with the full weight of his personali

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   Monday Morning

I got there three minutes early.Sat down. Clipboard on the desk. Notes arranged. All the professional furniture of a work meeting firmly in place. He walked in and sat across from me and all of it meant nothing.Something was different about him this morning. Not loud different. The quiet kind. Li

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   Tonight

The time is nine o'clock.I stayed outside his door for a bit before I knocked. Not really nerves. It was more like understanding you were on the verge of something and that there was no going back. For the whole day, I had feigned not to be concerned about this.I knocked. He opened it fast. Like

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   What The Pack Is Already Saying

I heard them before I got to the kitchen door. Two of the kitchen women in the pantry. Voices low the way voices go when the conversation is worth keeping quiet about. I was not trying to listen. I just stopped walking when I heard my name come through the gap in the door."He did not leave her sid

  • THE ALPHA'S CURVY LUNA   What Kade Knows

I ran into him coming out of the training hall.Sweaty. Hair damp. Shirt hanging open at the collar. He saw me in the corridor and stopped dead and looked at my face and a grin started building on his that he did not even try to contain.I kept walking."Amara.""Kade.""You look different.""I loo
