POV: Kaelan Ashwood

“Kill me, and your pack burns. Let me live, and I will tell you which fire to chase. Choose fast, Kaelan. Your mate is riding toward a trap, and the clock is not on your side.”

I did not answer. Orrin Vale stood across the desk from me with his hands folded, as calm as a man waiting for tea. Behind me Marcus swore under his breath and tried to lift his sword. His arm shook like a dead branch.

“Piers,” I said. “The door.”

“It is open, Alpha.”

“Then go and ring the alarm bell.

POV: Kaelan Ashwood“Alpha, they are wearing our colors. My own men. Boys I trained. They are marching under the Ashwood crest to attack Ashwood, and half the wall is asking whether they should shoot.”Piers was out of breath. He had run the whole length of the rampart, and sweat cut clean lines through the soot on his face. I stood at the top of the east tower with Maren and Marcus, looking down at the army gathering beyond the river. Hask’s coalition filled the plain, a rippling carpet of green and black. But at the front, in a neat line, rode two hundred wolves in gray, carrying our own white tree on their shields.“Who commands them?” I asked.“Captain Dray,” said Marcus. “He is the man who ran the tower guard. Vale gave him the rank last spring.”“Is he loyal to Vale?”“He is loyal to the law. That is worse.”I gripped the stone until my knuckles hurt. For nine years I had been told that the law was what held the pack together. Now I understood how a law could become a knife in t

POV: Lyra Thorne“Do not step on the ash yet, Lyra. This ground remembers who runs across it. If you go in angry, it will answer in kind, and I have buried enough people here to know it keeps its word.”Corvin held my reins with both hands. We had ridden two hours without speaking, over the broken ridge and down through the burned pines, and now the old Thorne land lay below us like a black bruise on the hills. I had not seen it since I was fourteen. The chimneys still stood. The crooked well still leaned. Even in the thin morning light I could see the shape of my own front step.“I am not angry,” I said.“You are shaking.”“I am cold.”“You are a poor liar for a girl who survived nine years in a fortress.” He tried to smile, but it came out crooked. “Breathe. Count to five. Your mother used to say that when the river rose.”I counted. One. Two. Three. By five my eyes had filled, and I let them. Rhea rode up on my other side, her shawl wound twice around her neck. Wren and Tam followe

POV: Kaelan Ashwood“If she will not remember me, then I will remember for both of us. Lyra, listen. Under the chestnut tree, the night of the first frost, you swore to me you would never stop fighting. Say it with me.”I knelt on the cold stone floor of the Moon Hall with Lyra in my arms. Her eyes were open but empty, like a house with the lamps put out. Around us the pack roared. The guards had drawn steel. Sevra was screaming for order, and no one gave her any. Vale stood at the high table with his hands raised in a gentle, helpless gesture, as if the whole thing were a terrible misunderstanding.“Lyra,” I said. “It is Kaelan. Do you hear me?”“Kaelan.” Her lips barely moved. “I know that name.”“You do. You said it first. You said it before anyone else in this fortress did.”“Take his sword, child,” Vale called. “He is not himself. Take it before he hurts the people.”Her hand moved. Slowly, like a puppet’s, it slid to my belt. I felt her fingers close around the hilt. I did not s

POV: Lyra Thorne“Do not look at Kaelan, child. Look at me. Look at the one who fed you. When have I ever asked you for anything except to be happy?”Orrin Vale did not shout. He never did. His voice slid across the Moon Hall like warm milk, and I felt my knees soften before I could stop them. Seven hundred faces watched me. My heart beat in my ears. I had spent nine years learning to walk without being seen, and now every eye in Ashwood burned on my skin.“I am not here to be fed,” I said. “I am here to show you the proof.”“What proof? A letter you stole?”“Wren,” I said, “bring it.”Wren came up the aisle with her chin high. She put the green page on the table and stepped back. Sevra frowned at it. Maren, the eldest of the three who wore gray, took it and held it to the light.“This is addressed to Hask of Dunmere,” she read slowly. “It speaks of a lullaby, and of a girl who will be ready by the harvest moon.” She looked up. Her eyes were hard. “Orrin. Whose hand is this?”“Maren,

POV: Kaelan Ashwood“Lay down your sword, Kaelan, or we will take it from you. Your father trusted us to guard this pack from a mad Alpha, and tonight we do our duty. Do not make us shame you in front of the people.”The eldest elder was Sevra Quill. She had taught me my letters when I was four. Now she stood on the council steps with her white hair blowing and her scroll in her fist, and fire lit her face from below like a ghost story. Behind her five more elders held torches. Behind them stood the tower guard, forty men in gray with their hands on their hilts.“Sevra,” I said. “The granary is burning.”“The granary can burn without you.”“Nine hundred wolves will starve this winter.”“Then let the Council decide who feeds them.”I looked past her at the yard. Wolves were passing buckets hand to hand from the well to the flames. A boy of ten ran with a bucket twice his size. A woman with a baby on her back climbed a ladder. No one was watching the elders. They were watching me.“List

POV: Lyra Thorne“Lower your bows or I will count your names aloud, one at a time, and your mothers will hear them. I am Lyra Thorne. I was a servant in your kitchen for nine years, and you know my face.”The dawn came up gray and thin behind me. Ahead of us the Ashwood wall rose out of the mist, black and wet, with a dozen archers leaning over the parapet. Smoke hung over the fortress like a dirty flag. I could taste it on my tongue. Beside me, Titus sat his horse like a statue. Forty riders waited in the trees behind him.“That is Gale Fenn,” I said, pointing. “Second archer from the left. You took my tray to the council hall once. You said thank you. Nobody else did.”The archer on the wall shifted. His bow dipped a finger’s width.“Lyra,” Briar hissed from my other side. “They have orders to shoot.”“Then they will have to shoot a person.” My heart was pounding so hard I thought they could hear it. “I am not a ghost. I am not an enemy. I am a woman at a gate.”A voice came down fr
