"You know, I'm not going to attack you," I said softly, finally breaking the silence between us. "You don't have to sit there like you're about to throw yourself out of the car."

She didn't look at me, just stared out the window, watching the passing trees. "I'm fine where I am."

"Emma…"

"Don't." Her voice was sharp, cutting. "Just... don't even start."

I just kept looking at her, the way she raised up her chin, looking outside as if someone should come in and save her from the demon she’s locked with. Her hand on the door handle, trying to break it open and escape.

Wait… she didn’t honestly think…

"You’re not seriously thinking I killed your mother to get you back here, are you?" The words slipped out before I could stop them.

And she answered, almost immediately as if she was waiting for me to say it.

"Honestly? Yeah. It sounds exactly like something you'd do. Especially after what you said to me a year ago."
