Wren's POV

Sleep finds me eventually, sometime after Sable finally convinces me to leave the corridor where Adrian's empty cell still smells faintly of him, and I fall into it too exhausted to fight whatever waits on the other side. My body aches in ways I don't fully understand, some deep muscular exhaustion that has nothing to do with sleep and everything to do with whatever the fire demanded of me in that courtyard, a bill I'm only now starting to feel come due.

Sable walked me to my door he

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 70

Rhydian's POVI reach the altar just as the light surrounding it turns blinding, and what I see in that instant nearly stops my heart entirely: Wren and Ysolde both suspended in some kind of trance, their bodies rigid, their eyes fixed on something none of the rest of us can perceive. Behind me, the sounds of battle have begun to falter, Voss's guards backing away from a light none of them seem willing to approach any closer."Wren!" I grab for her free hand, and the moment my skin makes contact with hers, I feel it too, distant and vast and utterly indifferent, a presence so old it makes even Voss's twenty-two years of patient scheming feel like the blink of an eye by comparison.Another, the presence observes, curious rather than alarmed. This one offers nothing of the bloodline. Merely love, freely given, for one who carries it. An interesting variable I confess I hadn't accounted for."Let her go," I say, though I'm uncertain whether I'm speaking aloud or simply projecting the dem

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 69

Wren's POVI reach the altar just as the light beneath Ysolde's palm reaches some kind of crescendo, and the moment I cross whatever threshold marks the ritual's boundary, I feel it, a pull unlike anything I've experienced before, ancient and vast and utterly indifferent to anything as small as human intention. The chaos of the battle around us seems to fade into something distant and muffled, as though the altar itself has drawn me into a pocket of reality separate from the ordinary rules governing everything outside its boundary."Wren." Ysolde's voice comes out strained, sweat beading along her weathered brow despite the cold morning air. "I don't think I can hold this alone. Whatever's on the other side of this door, it's testing the offering, weighing whether it's genuine enough to warrant opening fully."I don't hesitate. I press my own palm against the altar's stone beside hers, and the pull intensifies immediately, dragging at something deep inside my chest that feels less lik

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 68

Rhydian's POVI give the signal before Wren finishes speaking, and our formation breaks from concealment in a coordinated rush, every wolf we brought moving exactly according to the strategy we spent two days refining, circling wide to flank Voss's remaining guards while Wren and Ysolde move directly toward the altar itself. The mist swallows most of the initial chaos, shapes and shadows blurring together as wolves shift mid-stride, the familiar violence of battle covering the valley floor. The guards react fast, better trained than the ones we faced at that outpost weeks ago, and the fight that erupts is immediate and brutal, steel and teeth and the sharp, coppery smell of blood filling the misty air within seconds. I put myself between the nearest attacker and Wren's flank, my blade finding its mark even as I keep half my attention fixed on the altar, on Callum's slack, unresisting face, on the ashy light spreading wider beneath his feet with every passing second. Every instinct hon

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 67

Wren's POVThere's no point maintaining concealment once she's clearly seen us, and I step forward from the tree line with Rhydian close beside me, my whole body already thrumming with barely contained fire. Behind us, I hear the rest of our formation spreading quietly into position, Sable's careful strategy unfolding exactly as planned even as the element of surprise dissolves entirely. I feel the weight of every eye in that valley turning toward us, guards and Voss alike, and force myself to stand tall despite the fear coiling tight in my stomach."Let him go," I call out, my voice carrying more steadiness than I actually feel. "Whatever hold you have on him, release it. He's not yours to use.""Isn't he?" Voss's smile doesn't waver. "I found something rather remarkable in your brother, little ember, buried deep enough that even he never suspected its presence. A dormant trace of the very bloodline he spent five years trying to suppress in you. Poetic, don't you think? The same gift

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 66

Rhydian's POVWe move on the valley at first light, the mist still thick enough to swallow sound, and I feel every member of our formation carrying the same taut, silent readiness that comes only after a night spent unable to properly sleep. My own eyes feel gritty with exhaustion, though the adrenaline building steadily in my chest more than compensates for whatever rest I lost turning over every possible shape this confrontation might take. Behind us, Nightfall's territory recedes into memory, replaced by ground that feels increasingly unfamiliar with every step deeper into this valley's strange, watchful quiet.Even Ysolde, who's survived considerably worse than an uneasy landscape, keeps glancing toward the twisted trees with an expression I haven't seen from her before, something closer to genuine dread than her usual careful composure allows."You feel it too," I say quietly, falling into step beside her."I feel something," she admits. "Whatever waits at the center of this vall

  • THE ALPHA WHO SCENTED MY SECRET   Chapter 65

Wren's POVThe thought lodges itself in my chest like a blade before I can fully reason my way around it, cold and immediate and impossible to dislodge. Every memory of my brother rearranges itself around this new, terrible possibility, every careful glance, every moment of composure that never quite cracked the way it should have during ordinary grief. I think of the tears in his eyes two days ago, and wonder now whether they were genuine or simply another performance, one more layer in a lifetime of careful deception."Callum isn't Ember-blooded," Rhydian says carefully, though I can hear him working through the same horrible possibility even as he tries to reassure me. "There's never been any indication he carries the gift.""There was never any indication I carried it either," I say, my voice shaking, "not until the fire, not until everything I'd been told about myself turned out to be built on lies. What if Callum's always carried some smaller version of it, dormant, the way mine
