Chapter 5

I looked at my sister before asking again.

“Are you sure you want to get married?”

She smiled suddenly. “Of course.”

But the smile didn’t reach her eyes.

I knew my sister well enough to know when she was pretending to be happy. I didn’t push her any further. Maybe she really did want this, or maybe she was simply trying to convince herself that everything would be fine.

I left the dress shop soon after and made my way to the inn. I needed some air, and there was always something that needed to be done there.

But even as I worked, I couldn’t stop thinking about the Alpha.

What had I gotten myself into?

I already had enough problems waiting for me at the palace, and now the most feared werewolf in the kingdom knew my biggest secret. I dropped onto one of the wooden chairs and covered my face with both hands.

There was no way I was going to sleep tonight.

I was right.

The next morning, Rita found me sitting behind the inn’s counter with my head resting against my arms. She stared at me for a few seconds before slowly placing a basket on the table.

“You look terrible. What happened to you?”

I lifted my head and gave her a tired look. “My parents decided that I am getting married.”

Her mouth fell open.“To one of the princes?”

I nodded.Rita pulled out the chair opposite me and sat down. She had become one of my closest friends over the years, and she was one of the few fairies who never judged me for wanting a life outside the palace.

“You’re joking.”

“I wish I was.”

I told her everything that had happened, including the way my parents had announced the arrangement as though they were discussing a simple trade agreement. By the time I finished, Rita was shaking her head in disbelief.

“That explains why the palace looked like it was about to explode this morning. There were servants everywhere when I passed through. Your mother already has people preparing flowers, fabrics, and invitations.”

I groaned and dropped my forehead onto the counter.

“She works fast.”

“She is Queen Diana. Of course she works fast.” Rita laughed before becoming serious again. “Aliya, you can’t marry someone you don’t want.”

“I know.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I have no idea.”

Before Rita could answer, the inn door opened.I looked up.The last person I expected to see was standing there.

One of the princes of Cyria Elijah had walked into my inn.He looked around the place with an expression that immediately made my blood boil. He was dressed in an expensive dark-green coat embroidered with silver thread, and his hair had been carefully styled. Everything about him screamed royalty.

His eyes moved from the wooden tables to the shelves filled with magical herbs and finally to the baskets of bread and pastries cooling near the window.

“So this is where you’ve been spending all your time.”

I stood up. “What are you doing here?”

He gave a small laugh. “I wanted to see this place you have chosen over your family.”

“You followed me.”

“I wanted to know where you disappeared to every day. Surely you didn’t think nobody would notice.”

My jaw tightened.Nobody was supposed to know.

My mother had been one of the only few people who knew about the inn. She had made me promise that I would never tell anyone else about it, especially my father. I had kept that promise.Until now.

“How did you find this place?”

He walked toward one of the tables and ran his fingers across it before looking at the flour on his hand.

“I followed you.”

“You stalked me.”

“Call it whatever you want.”

I stepped in front of him. “Don’t touch anything.”

He raised an eyebrow.“This inn belonged to my grandmother,” I continued. “You don’t get to walk in here and mock it.”

“I wasn’t mocking it. I simply don’t understand why a princess would choose to live like this.”

“Because I actually like it.”

He smiled, but there was nothing warm about it.

“You will be a queen one day. You should start behaving like someone worthy of the position.”

“I would rather burn than become your wife.”

His smile disappeared.“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Try me.”For the first time, the arrogance in his expression faded.

“If you do anything to sabotage this alliance, Aliya, I won’t keep your little secret.”

My stomach dropped.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.“Imagine what your father would do if he discovered that his daughter has been sneaking across the border into wolf territory and spending her days at this little inn.”

I stared at him.Everyone was using this place against me.

The one thing I had inherited from my grandmother, the one place where I had ever felt like myself, had somehow become a weapon they could all use against me.

“You’re very foolish,” I whispered.

He straightened his coat. “I’m simply reminding you where your responsibilities lie.”

He walked out without another word.I remained standing behind the counter long after the door closed.

Rita came toward me and placed a hand on my shoulder.“You don’t have to marry him.”

“I know.”But knowing and finding a way out were two completely different things.

By nightfall, the inn was silent.I had barely finished cleaning when I heard the bell above the door.My heart immediately started racing.

I knew who it was.Nicklaus stood in the doorway. For one second, I considered disappearing.Instead, I stayed.

Somewhere deep inside me, I wanted answers. If fairies really were killing wolves, I needed to know. I couldn’t spend the rest of my life wondering whether everything my family had taught me was true.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“Put on your cloak.”

I frowned. “Excuse me?”

“Your hood too.”He turned toward the door.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll find out.”I hated how calm he sounded.

I grabbed my cloak anyway.Minutes later, I followed him through the forest. The deeper we went, the less familiar everything became. The trees grew taller and darker, their branches twisting above us until they blocked out most of the moonlight.

Eventually, Nicklaus stopped.

I looked ahead.Beyond the line of trees was the wolf territory.

I refused to take another step.“No.”

He turned around. “No?”

“I am not crossing that border.”

“You already did yesterday.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

“I was rescuing a pup.”

“And tonight?”

“You haven’t told me anything.”

Nicklaus looked at me for several seconds. His face remained unreadable, but his voice softened slightly.“You want to know whether your people are responsible for the deaths.”

I swallowed.“Yes.”

“Then trust me.”

I stared at him.Trusting a werewolf sounded like the stupidest thing I had ever heard.Yet somehow, I nodded. We continued walking.

The journey seemed to last forever. My wings remained tucked beneath my cloak as we moved deeper into wolf territory. The forest here felt different from the part I knew. There were no glowing flowers or floating lights. No tiny magical creatures moved between the trees.

Everything was darker and rougher. Even the air felt heavier. Then the trees opened.I stopped walking.

A village stretched across the valley below us.Warm lights glowed from wooden houses built between enormous trees. Smoke rose from stone chimneys, and I could see wolves moving through the streets in their human forms. Some carried baskets, others walked beside children, and a few stood outside what looked like small shops.

It wasn’t what I expected.I had imagined monsters.Instead, I saw families.

Nicklaus continued toward the village, and I followed him until a massive castle appeared beyond the houses.

I stared at it.The structure was built from dark stone, with enormous walls surrounding it. Tall towers rose into the night, their windows glowing with warm orange light.

It was nothing like our palace.

The fairy kingdom was filled with crystal towers, flowing water, flowers, and glowing bridges. Our buildings were bright and elegant, almost as though they had been designed to exist among the clouds.

This place looked like it belonged beneath the earth.Dark.Powerful.Almost frightening. And somehow, fascinating.

Nicklaus climbed the stone steps. Two warriors immediately moved in front of us.Their eyes went straight to me.One of them growled.

I instinctively stepped closer to Nicklaus.

“Move,” he ordered.

Neither man did.More wolves appeared behind them.Their eyes remained fixed on me, and the hostility rolling from them made the air feel thick.

“She is a fairy,” one of the warriors said. “You brought a fairy here?”

Nicklaus’s expression hardened.“I said move.”

The warrior shook his head. “Have you lost your mind, Alpha? If the council sees this, they’ll think you’ve betrayed us.”

Another wolf stepped forward. “Your father was killed by fairy magic. How can you bring one of them into our home?”

My chest tightened.

Nicklaus stepped between me and the warriors.

“Stand down.”

Nobody moved. His eyes changed. For a second, I saw something wild behind them.

Then his voice dropped into a cold command that made every wolf around us go silent.

“No one touches my mate.”The entire courtyard froze.

I stared at him.

Mate?

The word was impossible.Fairies and werewolves could not mate. Everyone knew that.Even the wolves looked confused. One warrior slowly turned toward another as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.

But Nicklaus didn’t look confused.

He looked completely certain.

I almost believed him, but my mind told me that was impossible. He was just lying to protect me.

His hand reached for mine.I should have pulled away.Instead, I let him take it.

ALIYA’S POVI didn’t like the way Nicklaus looked at me as we left the watchtower. He hadn’t said much since the voice came from the box, but I could tell he was thinking about it. Every now and then, his golden eyes moved toward me as if he expected something strange to happen again. I was beginning to find it annoying, especially because I had no answers to give him.The box had stopped glowing, the prisoners were safe with his guards, and we had taken the paper containing the instructions. There was nothing more we could do at the watchtower that night without risking another encounter with whatever was inside that thing.I wanted to go home. Not because I was frightened, although I certainly wasn’t eager to hear that voice again, but because I needed my family. If the coalition was using dark magic to target both kingdoms, then I couldn’t keep relying on Nicklaus and his wolves to find answers. My people had their own magic, their own history, and their own ways of protecting our

Chapter 31ALIYA’S POV“Aliya.”The voice came from inside the watchtower again, and I stopped walking. It sounded like someone I knew, but I couldn’t place it. There was something strange about the way it called my name, almost as if the person speaking was struggling to reach me from a great distance.Nicklaus moved in front of me, his shoulders tense as he studied the broken windows.“Stay behind me until we know who’s inside.”“I can take care of myself.”“I know you can. That doesn’t mean I’m going to let you walk straight into a trap.”I wanted to argue, but the black glow coming from the tower made me reconsider. It wasn’t ordinary darkness. It moved along the stone walls like smoke, disappearing into cracks before returning to the surface. I could feel my magic responding to it, growing restless beneath my skin. The voice called my name a third time. Then someone screamed.I rushed toward the entrance, but Nicklaus caught my hand. His grip was firm without hurting me, and when

ALIYA’S POV “Close every exit.” My father’s voice cut through the room, and the guards immediately moved to obey him. Two hurried toward the main doors while another ran to inform the soldiers stationed outside the council chamber. I was still holding the piece of blackened metal in my hand. The symbol engraved on it looked simple enough, but I couldn’t stop thinking about where I had seen it before. Lord Cedric wore a ring with the same symbol. He had served my father for years and was one of the loudest voices against involving the werewolves in our investigation. He had also been the man who suggested that Nicklaus’s soldiers might be preparing an attack, even after my father warned everyone not to jump to conclusions. It was suspicious, but suspicion wasn’t proof. “Father, we need to find Lord Cedric,” I said. “I have already sent guards to look for him.” “Don’t let anyone tell him why you’re looking. If he’s involved, he’ll try to destroy whatever evidence he has

ALIYAI should have known my mother would not let me enjoy a single peaceful morning.I had barely finished breakfast when a servant informed me that Queen Diana wanted to see me in the royal sitting room. Judging by the careful way he avoided my eyes, I suspected she had already spent the morning discussing me with half the palace.I considered pretending I had somewhere important to be, but I wasn’t stupid enough to believe that would work. When I entered the sitting room, Mother was standing beside the window with a stack of papers in her hands. She looked up, and I immediately wished I had brought someone with me.“Sit down, Aliya.”I obeyed, keeping my expression neutral.“I have spent the entire morning speaking to representatives from Cyria,” she began. “They are understandably upset about the postponement. Some believe we are insulting their family, while others suspect we are hiding something.”“We are hiding something,” I muttered. Her eyes narrowed. “What was that?”“Nothin

ALIYABy the time we returned to the palace, I was exhausted, but there was no time to rest.News of Elijah’s kidnapping had spread through the royal household, and everyone seemed to be waiting for us. Guards stood near the entrance, servants hurried between rooms, and several members of the royal council had gathered in the main hall. The moment Elijah stepped out of the carriage, King Charles rushed toward him.“Elijah!”He grabbed his son’s shoulders, examining the bruises on his face before pulling him into a tight embrace. “What happened to you? Who did this?”“I’m fine, Father.”“You are clearly not fine!”Charles’s voice echoed through the hall, but his anger quickly gave way to concern when Elijah winced. He immediately loosened his grip and called for the royal healer.I stepped down from the carriage, barely having time to straighten my clothes before my mother rushed toward me.“Aliya!”She pulled me into her arms, holding me so tightly that I struggled to breathe. “Where

I had barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes, I thought about the wedding waiting for me in the morning. The dress my mother had chosen was hanging in my room, and the servants had spent most of the evening making sure everything was ready. Flowers had been delivered, guests were arriving, and the palace was busier than I had ever seen it.Everyone was excited about the union.Everyone except me.I stood in front of the mirror while Laura fixed the last few pins in my hair. She had been talking about the ceremony for nearly twenty minutes, but I had barely heard a word. My attention kept drifting to the door, and I could not stop checking the time.“Aliya, are you listening to me?” Laura asked, turning me toward her.“Of course.”“What did I just say?”“That my hair looks beautiful?”She gave me an unimpressed look. “I said you should stop looking as if you are about to be executed. You are getting married, not going to war.”I almost laughed. If only she knew how close those two th
