Chapter 9: The Return of the Monster

“Mom! Can I play with my ball outside?” Daniel’s voice rang through the apartment, breaking my focus. I smiled at the sound of his innocence, his carefree spirit the one thing that had kept me going through the darkest of times. The world outside had been cruel, but Daniel had been my light, my reason to rise each morning.

“Sure, sweetheart,” I called back, making my way to the window to watch him run out onto the playground across the street.

A part of me was always worried when he went outside, knowing how much of the world I had to shield him from, but for now, he was safe. He was happy. And in that moment, nothing else mattered.

But then, as I turned away from the window, the bell rang—loud, urgent, almost deafening. My heart skipped a beat, and I rushed to the door, never thinking twice. Who would be at the door at this hour?

I opened it, and my breath caught in my throat.

There he was. Ethan Vaughn. Standing on the other side, as if the years had never passed. His gaze, cold a

“Do you really think you can win this, Sienna?” Ethan’s voice cut through the air like a knife, sending a chill down my spine. His cold gaze locked onto mine, the same icy stare I had once desperately tried to understand. We stood outside the courthouse, mere steps away from entering a battle that would determine everything for Daniel. And yet, it felt like we were back at the beginning, in a place I never wanted to revisit.“I don’t need to win, Ethan,” I replied, my voice steadier than I felt. “I only need to make sure Daniel is safe. That’s all that matters now.”His lips curled into a sardonic smile, and I saw the same arrogance I had always hated. “Safe?” He laughed, but it wasn’t the kind of laughter that made me feel like he was actually amused. It was the kind that made my skin crawl. “You think you can keep him from me? You really think that you can hide him in some little life you’ve built, and I’ll just let you get away with it?”“You don’t know anything about my life, Etha

"I told you, Sienna, you don't have to worry about a thing." Evelyn's voice was warm as she placed a steaming cup of coffee on the counter. "Just take it one day at a time."I nodded, feeling the weight of the moment settle on me. For the first time in years, I felt like I had a sliver of control over my own fate. The café was a safe haven, its quiet hum of conversation and clinking cups a refuge from the chaos of the world outside. Every day, I worked diligently—pouring coffee, wiping tables, and doing whatever I could to ensure I had enough to support myself and my son. Life, though still uncertain, was beginning to feel manageable again. As I wiped down the counter, the bell above the door jingled, signaling someone’s arrival. I didn’t look up immediately. My focus was on the dirty cup in my hand. But when I heard the voice—a low, smooth baritone—I froze."I’m looking for Sienna Carter."I froze, my breath catching in my throat. I knew that voice. A voice I never thought I would he

"Sienna, you have to keep moving."The wind bit through my clothes, sharp as knives, as I trudged along the freezing streets, my breath coming out in quick, visible gasps. I couldn’t remember the last time I had eaten. My stomach growled, but there was no food to be had. Only the endless stretch of concrete that seemed to go on forever.I wanted to scream, to call out to someone, anyone, but there was no one. Not anymore. Ethan was gone, his promises as cold and empty as the city that swallowed me whole. My feet were raw from walking so much in shoes that had long since lost their purpose. Every step I took was a reminder of how far I had fallen—from the grand penthouses and catered dinners to… this endless search for shelter. For survival.I pushed against the wind, fighting the tears that burned my eyes, knowing there was no one to care. Not anymore.I could still remember his touch. Ethan’s strong arms around me, his whispered promises that I was safe, that I would always have a h

"How could you?" Ethan's voice cracked like a whip, the words searing through the thick air. His anger was a tempest, and I could feel the intensity of every syllable. "I trusted you, Sienna, and you—""Stop!" I pleaded, my voice barely audible beneath his rage. "You don't even know what you're accusing me of."Margaret, his mother, sat across from us, her eyes gleaming with a cruel satisfaction as if she were witnessing the spectacle of her dreams. "Go on, Ethan," she said in a cool, detached voice. "Let her explain herself."Explain? What was there to explain? My body trembled, the exhaustion of everything weighing me down. Ethan's accusations sliced through my heart, but it was the calm, almost gleeful look in his mother's eyes that made me want to run, to escape."You've betrayed me!" Ethan hissed, his words venomous, poisoning the air around us. "You carry another man's child, and you still lie about it!"I recoiled at his words, but I didn't back down. "Ethan, no! This child is

"I can't believe this," I muttered under my breath as I sat on the edge of the bathroom sink, staring at the two blue lines on the pregnancy test. My heart raced in my chest, a mix of excitement and fear. I had hoped for a family, but now that the possibility was staring back at me, I couldn't help but feel the weight of uncertainty bearing down on me. I swallowed hard, staring at the small test in my hands as if somehow, the answer might change if I looked at it long enough. The baby. Ethan's child. But was he even going to be thrilled? Or would he see this as one more thing to control, something else to manipulate? I knew Ethan wasn’t the man I had hoped he would be when I agreed to marry him. But I thought, maybe... maybe this would change everything. Maybe this would be the one thing that would make him love me. Sighing, I stood up, feeling the weight of my thoughts in my body. The baby. What would this mean for my future? What would it mean for my son? Just then, I hear
