Mathilda’s POV

September 28, 2017

What is the greatest regret you’ve ever faced?

If someone asked me, my greatest regret would be marrying Fredric.

Yes, this is the saddest marriage in the world.

All those stories about cruel husbands and wives trapped in forced marriages arranged by grandmothers only exist in movies.

In reality? It happened to me.

If I could cancel the wedding that took place a month ago, things wouldn’t be this bad.

“What are you doing in my bed? Get out of there!”

I turned to my right, where a tall man with an old birthmark on his left chest was glaring at me. That man is my husband — Fredric Liam Smith.

What could I do when he acted like that? Of course, I immediately got out of his way.

There was no affection, no kisses, no trace of happiness. The only time he ever showed me a kind gesture was when we were in front of his grandmother, Rosa.

Rosa is the only person in this family who truly loves me. Her care and warmth never go unnoticed, and I owe her so much.

“Mr. Fredric, tomorrow you have an appointment for—”

“Shut up! I know my schedule for tomorrow. Why are you telling me this? Since when did you become my secretary? Are you stalking me?”

See? I hadn’t even finished my sentence when Fredric immediately snapped at me.

Don’t be surprised by how I call him — I never call him love or darling. I call him Mr. Fredric.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Fredric. I didn’t mean it that way, but your secretary told me. She said they couldn’t reach you and that it was an urgent meeting.”

Fredric glared at me and quickly grabbed his phone from the table.

“Next time, get straight to the point. Just remind me to turn my phone on. You don’t need to meddle or manage my schedule, understand? Don’t bother me again! I need to rest after a whole day of pretending to be happy in this damned marriage.”

I don’t blame him. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s Rosa and me.

Rosa worried about my life after my parents died. Yes, I’ve known this family since I was a child.

My father, Goyle, was Rosa’s chauffeur. He worked for her for about twenty years or so.

Ah, remembering how loyal my father was to her and how he used to take me to play in her garden when I was little always makes me ache with nostalgia.

A heavy feeling swelled in my chest. How is my father doing in heaven? Has he reunited with my mother?

My thoughts were interrupted when Fredric’s phone rang. He immediately got up and smiled broadly at the screen.

“Baby, I waited until you fell asleep! Where are you?”

A soft, happy voice I’ve never once received from him. Guess who’s calling?

If you don’t know, let me tell you — it’s Paula, a famous model. Paula is, of course, Fredric’s girlfriend.

You might wonder how everything could fall apart after just one month of marriage. Of course — Fredric explained everything on the very day of our wedding.

“Hurry up, let’s go,” Fredric said. He seemed in a rush, leaving the bed and heading to the bathroom.

I still hadn’t moved from the sofa. Where could he possibly be taking me so late at night?

“Hey, what are you waiting for?! Didn’t you hear me?!” Fredric shouted, banging on the bathroom door.

I immediately got up and went to the wardrobe to find some clothes. A white sweater and black pants — my safest choice.

Fredric looked furious and disgusted when he came out of the bathroom.

“You’re so slow and useless. I still can’t understand why Grandma loves you so much and forced me to marry you. What value could anyone possibly see in you? You’re not even pretty, and you smell terrible! Tch! It’s disgusting having to share a bed with you, Mathilda!”

My legs trembled. His words burned and cut deep. All I could do was hold back my tears and head straight to the bathroom.

What could I do? Argue with him?

I made a promise — to Rosa and to my father — that I would endure this marriage.

My only hope is that someday, all this might change.

Yes, I still hope Fredric will eventually change how he sees me. I may not be beautiful, but my heart and feelings are always ready to love him unconditionally.

**

“How long are you going to take?! Dressing nicely won’t make me like you anyway. You still look plain and ugly in that sweater — so unfitting.”

Those insulting words greeted me as soon as I entered the car. All I could do was lower my head and fasten my seatbelt.

Fredric turned slightly toward me. He sniffed the air. What now? Do I really smell that bad?

“Ugh! You smell awful! Didn’t I give you your monthly allowance two days ago? Why didn’t you buy perfume?”

“I’m wearing perfume, Mr. Fredric. It’s just the only one I can afford… I’m sorry, but I don’t think I smell as bad as you say.”

“Your cheap perfume doesn’t reach my nose, understand? You should know who you’re with now. You’ll never earn my affection, but you’re my wife, stupid. You’ll have to meet important people often — Grandma will definitely take you to many events. You should open your eyes and learn to use luxury perfumes! Don’t embarrass our family!”

The phone rang again, catching his attention. The name Paula flashed brightly on the screen beside the gear shift. Now I understood where we were going — of course, to meet Paula.

Fredric answered immediately, “Yes, baby, I’m on my way. Wait for me.”

Right after saying that, the car began to move.

The radio was the only sound in the stillness of the night — it was already past midnight.

The grand, luxurious mansion that every girl dreams of glimmered in the rearview mirror.

I looked at Fredric — his handsome face was truly breathtaking.

What kind of dream have I been living all this time?

Here I am, in a car beside the man I’ve always admired.

Ah… if only it had all happened for love.

FREDRIC'S POVThe bed was unimaginably soft, and the atmosphere was warm and quiet. This room was the best place in the world, so why did I have to leave it?A foolish question that would surely make my grandmother disgusted with me and scold me if I voiced what I was feeling right now."Fredrick?" My grandmother's voice, accompanied by knocks on the door, made me spring up from the bed instantly. When I opened the door, she was as impeccably dressed and composed as always."It's time to leave, hurry up. At least you enjoyed sleeping in your room for an hour, didn't you? And you enjoyed your favorite dishes, which will be very hard for you to taste again. I bet the money I gave you when you and that whore came here has already been snatched by her, hasn't it?"There was only one answer, and I was sure my grandmother already knew it. I simply smiled and kissed her forehead.I said, "Thank you for the food and for your kindness. I'll take good care of this new phone."She said sharply,

MATHILDA'S POVThis old warehouse on the outskirts of the city was as far from luxurious as anything could possibly be. The scent of dust, machine oil, and stale coffee hit me the moment I stepped inside. I walked up to the heavy steel door and knocked three times. The harsh sound of an iron latch being shoved back echoed loudly, followed by a rusty groan as the door swung open to reveal Antonio. He wasn't wearing his leather jacket today; instead, he wore a simple black shirt, slightly torn at the shoulder. His hair was messy, and his eyes... that gaze was still as cold as it had been at the restaurant that day. There was no trace left of the man who had once been a famous commercial star."You're on time." He muttered coldly before turning around without even inviting me in.I stepped inside, letting out a soft, disgruntled huff. Honestly, this man lacked the most basic rules of common courtesy. He walked toward the center of the warehouse, which had been converted into a temporary

MATHILDA'S POVI had tried on at least ten dresses, and every time I walked out of the fitting room, Maria looked at me with an exaggerated, feigned expression of boredom.Maria said mockingly as I slipped into an emerald green silk dress: "Way too flashy, and the cut doesn’t suit your stiff body."She paid almost no attention to my appearance, continuing to scroll through her phone instead. "Your taste is abysmal. You don’t even know how to choose a luxurious fabric."I sighed and looked at my reflection in the mirror. "Perhaps you could offer me some advice, Maria, instead of just complaining."She tossed the dress aside violently and said: "I won’t be with you forever, so you need to raise your value and become much more valuable! No wonder Paula hates you—your level of competition is this low!"Annoyed, I stepped on her foot without thinking. "Didn't I tell you not to bring my personal matters into this?!"She shrieked: "Ouch! That hurts! How rude you are!"Honestly, I don’t know

FREDRIC'S POVMy head felt like it was being crushed inside a machine. The loud music in the penthouse, which once felt like a heartbeat, had now turned into a sharp screech tearing at my nerves. On the glass table in front of me, the white powder was neatly lined up; the only thing capable of stopping this spinning world, even if just for a moment.I took a deep breath through my nose, letting the cocaine take effect, swallowing every trace of guilt and anger, and the image of Matilda smiling at me with all that love that used to fill her eyes."Damn it!"I screamed and slammed my fist against the table with all the raging emotions inside me. I was losing my mind."Damn you, Frederick! Can't you enjoy that cocaine without smashing my things?! What exactly do you want?!" Paula screamed. Her screaming made me stand up immediately. I grabbed the face of the woman who had been stoking my anger all this time."I want you to keep quiet, Paula! Let me be angry, this is none of your business

Matilda's POVThe Grand Avenue Mall in the heart of Samoa felt less like a shopping center and more like a labyrinth of suffocating luxury. The marble floors stretched beneath my feet like an endless sheet of polished ice, reflecting an extravagance I still felt I didn't deserve in the least. For hours, I had been subjected to the ruthless scrutiny of fashion designers, forced to wear a dress by a world-renowned designer that felt like a gilded cage, trapped in high heels no less dangerous than a deadly weapon, and coated in layers of expensive makeup enough to hide the face of a ghost. I felt like nothing more than a stage prop—an amateur actress forced to wear a costume a size too small and play a part she never auditioned for in the first place."Keep your chin up while you walk, Matilda. You’re no longer a cashier hiding in a dark corner of a small shop," Maria whispered, her voice like a sharp knife slicing through the noise of the mall.Even now, standing in Enzo's presence, she

MATHILDA'S POVI sat frozen in the corner of the bed, staring around the room that I still couldn't get used to. It was my third day at Enzo's estate deep in the woods near the Silent Drop region, and also the fifth day since my facial reconstruction.I still didn't understand why he had brought me to this secluded mansion, when on the day I regained consciousness we had been staying at his private residence. That one was directly connected to his company in the heart of Samoa—a Western city not too far from New York. I mean, if I had stayed there, maybe I wouldn't have felt so detached from the life I was used to.This feeling of strangeness was completely different. It was as if I were trapped in a terrible nightmare. I wanted to wake up, but I couldn't. All of this left a paralyzing emptiness inside me."Mathilda, may I come in?"For some reason, just Enzo's voice behind the room door brought tears streaming down my face. I stood up and stared at my reflection once more."I don't k
