LOGINCHAPTER 2: THE WEDDING
Saturday came too fast. I stared at the white dress hanging on my hotel room door. It wasn’t mine. It was sent this morning by Damian’s assistant. Designer. $12,000 tag still on it. "Miss Carter," the assistant said on the phone. "The car is downstairs. The ceremony starts in 2 hours." No "Are you ready?" No "How do you feel?" Just orders. My phone buzzed. Mom. "Baby? Are you okay? We saw the news. 'Billionaire Damian Cole marries today'... is that you?" I closed my eyes. "It’s... complicated, Mom. I’ll explain later. Tell them I’m fine." "Ali, what’s going on?" "I love you. I have to go." I hung up before I could cry. --- The St. Regis Hotel looked like a palace. Flowers everywhere. Cameras. Reporters. But the wedding was "private". Only 20 people. All Damian’s board members and family. I walked down the aisle alone. No dad. No brother. No one on my side. And there he was. Damian Cole in a black tux. Hands in pockets. Face like stone. He didn’t smile when he saw me. He just looked... bored. The priest started talking. I didn’t hear any of it. My hands shook holding the bouquet. Fake flowers. Fake marriage. "Do you, Damian Cole, take Ali Carter to be your lawfully wedded wife?" "Yes." Cold. Fast. "Do you, Ali Carter, take Damian Cole to be your lawfully wedded husband?" My throat closed. $5 million. My brother. "Yes." The ring was cold. Platinum. 3 carats. It felt like handcuffs. "You may kiss the bride." Damian’s eyes met mine. Warning. Rule #3: No kissing unless for show. He leaned down. His lips barely brushed mine. 1 second. For the cameras. For show. Applause. "Mrs. Cole," he whispered against my ear. Only I could hear. "Remember the contract." --- The reception was hell. I smiled. I laughed at jokes I didn’t get. I let Damian’s mother hug me and call me "dear". His ex was there. Sophia. Blonde. Perfect. She stared at me like I was dirt. "So you’re the new wife," she said, sipping champagne. "How long do you think it’ll last?" "Long enough," I said and walked away. At 10PM, Damian finally grabbed my arm. "We’re leaving." "What about the honeymoon?" someone yelled. "Business trip," Damian said without looking at me. The Bentley was waiting. The second the doors closed, he let go of my arm like I was fire. "Ground rules," he said, staring out the window. "You have your own room. In my penthouse. Don’t touch my things. Don’t go through my office. Don’t ask me about my work." "Got it." "And Ali." He finally looked at me. "Don’t make me regret this." We drove to Cole Tower in silence. Up 89 floors. He opened a door to a massive bedroom. King bed. Ocean view. Everything white and gold. "This is yours." "Where’s yours?" "Other side of the penthouse." He turned to leave. "Damian?" He stopped. Didn’t turn around. "Thank you... for the money. My brother’s surgery is Friday." Silence. "Don’t get attached, Mrs. Cole." Then he was gone. I sat on the $20,000 bed in my $12,000 dress and realized something. I was married to a stranger. In a mansion I didn’t earn. With a ring I didn’t want. But my brother would live. Rule #1: Don’t fall for him. Rule #2: Survive 1 year. I could do this. I had to. The room was so quiet I could hear my own breathing. Everything here smelled like Damian. Expensive cologne, leather, and something cold I couldn’t name. The bed was bigger than my whole old apartment. The closet was already full of dresses with my size tags. His assistant must’ve bought them. I took off the ring and set it on the nightstand. The diamond caught the moonlight and threw it across the ceiling. 3 carats of "fake". My phone lit up. A text from an unknown number. [Damian]: The first installment was sent. Check your account. [Damian]: And don’t leave the penthouse without telling my security. No "goodnight". No "how are you". Just business. I checked my bank app with shaking hands. $2,500,000.00 Deposited. I started crying then. Not because I was sad. But because for the first time in months, my brother had a chance. I whispered to the empty room: "One year, Ali. You can survive one year." The city lights blinked outside the window. Somewhere on the other side of this penthouse, my husband was sleeping. A man who didn’t want me. A man I wasn’t allowed to want back. END OF CHAPTER 2"Case closed." Agent Reyes said it on a Monday. In person. At the library. "All three charged. No threat left. You’re clear." Damian exhaled. Like he’d been holding his breath for months. "Thank you," he said. Reyes smiled. "And good news. City approved the grant. $80,000. For security. Cameras. Doors. The works." I looked at Damian. He looked at me. "We can keep it open," I said. "Yeah," Damian said. "We can." --- That week felt different. No police cars. No news vans. Just people. Parents. Kids. Students. Lila brought us a drawing. The library. With a big sun. And us holding hands in front. Damian put it on the wall. --- Friday. First author event. We were nervous. Would anyone come? By 6PM, 200 people were in folding chairs. Spilling into the aisles. Local author. Mystery novel. She read a chapter. Signed books after. Kids asked questions. Adults bought coffee. Mara handled the register. At one point Damian leaned over to me. "See
The interrogation room was small. White walls. One table. Kyle sat with his head in his hands. Agent Reyes across from him. Damian and I watched from behind the glass. "He's giving us names," Reyes said over the speaker. "Two of them." She wrote on a notepad. Slid it across. Name 1: Derek Vance. Former Cole Industries. Accounting. Fired 9 months ago. Name 2: Marcus Hale. Former Cole Industries. Security. Quit 6 months ago. "Both still in the city," Reyes said. "Both angry. Both blaming you." Damian didn't blink. "Arrest them." "We already did," Reyes said. "30 minutes ago." --- By noon it was on the news. 3 ARRESTS IN COLE INDUSTRIES THREAT CASE FBI SAYS DANGER HAS PASSED Damian turned the TV off. "Is it really over," I asked. "The criminal part," he said. "Yes." He said it like he didn't believe it. --- That night we went home. No officers outside. No cameras. Damian checked the locks anyway. Once. Then stopped himself. "Old habits," he said.
11:58PM. The library was dark. Except for the desk lamp. 4 officers inside. 6 outside. Damian by the front window. Me by the back. "Nothing yet," Officer Chen said into his radio. "Copy," the voice came back. "We've got eyes on the alley." Damian looked at me. "You sure about this?" "No," I said. "But we're doing it anyway." 12:00AM. The lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then the back door rattled. Everyone moved. --- "Police! Hands up!" A shadow ran. Backpack. Hoodie. Kyle Mercer. He didn't stop. He ran between the shelves. Knocked a cart over. Books everywhere. "Stop!" Damian yelled. Kyle turned down the kids' aisle. Cornered. He pulled something out. Lighter. "Don't," I said. He looked at me. Eyes wild behind the mask. "You ruined us," he said. "All of us. For your library." "Put it down," Officer Chen said. Gun steady. Kyle struck the lighter. Flame. My heart stopped. And then I stepped forward. Before Damian could grab me. "Kyle," I s
"It's not human." Agent Reyes said it twice. Like she didn't believe it herself. "The blood in the car. Dog. German Shepherd." Damian and I were at the station. 8AM. Coffee cold in our hands. "But," Reyes said. "We got a hit on the other DNA. From the hat." She slid a folder across the table. Name: Kyle Mercer. Age: 32. Former Cole Industries Security. Dishonorably discharged. Missing: 6 months. "Peterson's guy," Damian said. "Yeah," Reyes said. "He has a record. Assault. Vandalism. Hates the Coles." Damian closed the folder. "Where is he?" "We don't know," Reyes said. "But he just posted something." She turned her laptop. Video. Dark. Mask. Distorted voice. "Cole Library. Tonight. Midnight. It burns." 12 seconds. Then black. --- Mara was already at the library when we got there. Shelving books. She saw our faces. Dropped the book. "What," she said. "Kyle," Damian said. "They found him." Her hand went to her mouth. "No. He said he left
The whiteboard in Agent Reyes' office had names. Lots of them. Damian Cole. Ali Carter. Board Member #1. Board Member #3. Sophia Cole. IN CUSTODY. And now: Mara Jenkins. Library volunteer. She's getting threats too, Reyes said. So is Peterson's lawyer. So is the judge from the civil case. Damian stared at the board. It's not just us, he said. No, Reyes said. It's everyone connected to Cole Industries. --- The library was full when we got back. But different. Quieter. Parents kept looking at the door. Damian did his speech again. "We're safe. We're open. We're not leaving." Most people nodded. Some left anyway. I don't blame them, I said. Neither do I, Damian said. He stayed late. Helped shelve books. Fixed the printer. Made coffee. Like if he kept busy, the bad thing wouldn't happen. --- Monday. Letter came to the jail. For Damian. From Sophia. He didn't want to open it. I told him he should. Inside: one page. Her handwriting. Damian, I did
The call ended at 12:03AM. Peterson's voice was still in the room. "I don't know who’s doing this. But it's not me." Damian sat on the edge of the bed. Elbows on knees. Head down. You believe him, I asked. I don't know what I believe, he said. He stood up. Checked the locks. Front door. Back door. Windows. Again. Come to bed, I said. In a minute, he said. He didn't come. --- I woke up at 3AM. Alone. Found him in the living room. Sitting on the floor. Back against the couch. Phone in his hand. Can't sleep, I said. No, he said. I sat next to him. He put his arm around me. Didn't say anything. Just held me. For hours. --- 6AM. My phone buzzed. News alert. BREAKING: SECOND ARSON ATTEMPT COLE INDUSTRIES FORMER HQ - DOWNTOWN FIRE CONTAINED. NO INJURIES. There was a photo. Our old building. 12th floor. Black around the windows. Fire trucks below. Damian saw it over my shoulder. Stood up immediately. It's starting again, he said. Agent Reyes call
