Aria’s POV

I heard boss’s engagement party from Priya. She had told me that morning in her teasingly manner.

Priya was the accounts floor’s most reliable source of information about everything and anything that happened above the fourth floor, and the company at large. Feel free to call her the office blogger.

It was on a Friday, around ten forty-something in the morning, I was midway through a secondary reconciliation Marcus had assigned me when Priya suddenly appeared at the edge of my desk, a file was in one hand, her tablet in another, but the look she gave me instantly told me that that wasn’t the bone of contention.

“Have you seen the internal memo?” she asked.

“Which one?”

She turned her tablet toward me.

It was a brief, formally worded notice from the Beaumont Group communications office. The kind of internal memo that dressed itself as informational while being, in substance, an announcement.

The information was to inform staff that the company would be hosting a private celebration in three weeks time at Alderton Hall, and that certain senior members of the team would be in attendance. It referenced, in the third paragraph, the occasion being celebrated.

The forthcoming engagement of Mr. Xavier Beaumont and Ms. Ivanna Sinclair.

I blinked repeatedly, this should be familiar to me, after all, they were dating. But it sounded foreign instead.

I read it over and over again, to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating.

It was real.

“Alderton Hall,” Priya said, in the tone of someone talking about a graceful event, “is very fancy. If you see the ambiance alone… oh good Lord, it feels like heaven on earth. I can’t wait to be there again.” She rumbled on.

“Good for them,” I said.

She looked at me properly now. “What do you mean good for them.”

“I’m not a senior staff, so, it’s not mandatory.”

I handed the tablet back to her and returned to the reconciliation document I was walking on before she distracted me with the unnecessary information she had… or maybe, necessary information.

***

The morning continued in its usual way..

I worked through the reconciliation with the mechanical efficiency of someone who was burying her worries in work. My thoughts wrestled against each other inside of me.

I opened my email box and peeped at the memo again.

Xavier Beaumont was getting engaged. My brain needs to register that efficiently. He is my boss and I shouldn’t look at him beyond that boss to employe relationship.

Not the version of him that showed up at my door late in the evening to apologize.

I blinked it away.

I finished the reconciliation longer than it should have taken, then I went for lunch. I located a secluded spot at the cafeteria and I was grateful for that.

I had declined Priya’s invitation earlier that afternoon to join the company’s Friday treat, the company just secured a huge contract, according to Priya, hence the celebration.

She tried her possible best to make me stay, since most of the staffs will be there and they will even try some Korean meals.

I salivated at the thought of eating those Korean food I’ve only seen on television, but yet, I declined.

At exactly six pm. I carried my bag, say some goodnight greetings to my colleagues and headed toward the elevator, signed out at reception, and walked to the car park without looking back at the building.

***

Bryan was already in his pajamas when I got home, he had gone to Arthur’s for the day and been dropped back by the estate driver before late evening as discussed.

The visit to the Beaumont’s estate had became a routine he had adapted to so much.

He was on the living room floor with his football cards, organizing them into categories I didn’t fully understand.

“Mommy!” He ran and crossed his arms around my neck as I crouched down.

I listened a bit to hundreds of hot gist the little man wanted to share with me, and somewhere along the line, I took permission to go and change out of my work clothes and heat dinner. He agreed reluctantly and I hurried up to my room before he changes his mind.

Changing and taking my bath took about twenty minutes. Then I went to the kitchen to set dinner.

I had enough food, cooked and stored in the refrigerator, that way, it’s easier to have varities of food without worrying about the next meal to cook..

“Your eyes are tired,” Bryan said with concern written all over his face. Only then did I realized that he had been watching me for a while.

He was just five years old, but he’s conscious about his environment and people in it like an adult.

I looked at the frank and uncomplicated accuracy of him for a moment before cutting to myself.

“I’m okay, baby,” I said. “Come for dinner, the table will be ready in two minutes.”

He moved to the dinning area without further comment. Then he ate his food in mid-silence, frequently telling me one of his childish jokes.

I smiled and comment nicely at each one… I better do.

I put him to bed at around eight-thirty, amidst folktales he requested for but fell asleep before I even finish the first one.

I covered him with the duvet, kissed him lightly on his cheeks and turned off his room light. Unlike other children of his age, Bryan had never liked sleeping with the lights on.

I closed the door gently after me and went back to the sitting room. The house was gravely quiet except from the cricket sound coming from somewhere far.

I sat down on the couch while Xavier’s engagement memo replayed behind in my eyes.

It replayed with a question I hadn’t been able to answer myself.

*Why was I getting unnecessary bothered by the boss’ engagement?

It’s not like I was dating him or something. Even when some moments wanted to resemble something special, it didn’t happen at the end of the day.

The internal memo earlier today wasn’t just an information, it was a mirror. Whatever feelings I had started to have toward Xavier, it all had to end in the dark, now and forever.

Ivanna’s POVThe truth about my visit to the estate wasn’t because I had a genuine reason for going. For some reason I couldn’t phantom, Xavier was acting weird lately. I mean so weird, and it’s less than two weeks to our engagement already, I can’t afford to condone any lapses at this point. I went to check on him at his penthouse but he wasn’t there. I called him and he wasn’t picking either, so, I had to add one plus one and I guessed he could be at his grandfather’s estate.Though, going to the Beaumont’s estate means killing two birds with one stone. I know Xavier’s grandfather, Arthur had always had strong opinions about table positioning at formal events, an old habit developed across decades of hosting quite a number of it. Pamela had listed it out specifically that getting his input early would save at least two rounds of revision later. So, you can say I had a genuine reason also. Nevertheless, I’m already at the estate ground. The house was calm when I entered, on one of

Xavier’s POVI drove to the estate the next day around midday.I saw Pamela’s call few minutes after I left the penthouse. I silenced her call angrily, I can’t deal with that for now. Ivanna’s call came into my phone barely two minutes after I ignored Pamela’s. I silenced it too, put my phone on silent mode and dropped it in the drawer.I knew Pamela had already communicated with her and whatever Pamela was calling about earlier had already been relayed. The drive took almost an hour in light weekend morning traffic, the land slimmed gradually into the kind of landscape that made you understand why someone had bought twelve acres of it fifty years ago had decided not to sell. The estate gates opened immediately my car got there on recognition of my plate. ***Margaret met me in the entrance hall with a wild smile.“You’re welcome, Mr. Xavier,” she said with a little smile tugged on her lips before it disappeared, the kind that clearly says these kind of visits are rare. “Mr. Beaumon

XAVIER’S POVBy Friday of that week, my calendar had accumulated four additional engagement-related items without my active participation, a menu tasting Celeste had booked on my behalf for Saturday morning, a call with the Alderton Hall events manager that had appeared in my schedule overnight, a reminder about confirming the final guest list, and a note from Ivanna asking whether I preferred the champagne toast before or after the dinner service.I stared at the calendar for a moment before I closed it.My grandfather also had called twice this week. Both times I had been in the middle of meeting that couldn’t be interrupted, once a call with the legal team, the second time, a board meeting that had been rescheduled once and I couldn’t afford to disrupt. I had called back both times after I was done but my calls only reached his voicemail. I hadn’t called again after then.I had thought what he wanted to discuss couldn’t be anything other than the planning of the engagement party, s

Xavier’s POVI was at my office in the company headquarters when I got a call from Ivanna’s events coordinator, a woman named Pamela. She was one of the A-list events coordinator in the city, her clients are mostly top personalities in the elite circle. I had met her at a couple of social events I attended. So, I wasn’t that surprised when my personal assistant told me Pamela asked to schedule a call with me, I knew it was Ivanna’s doing.“Hello, Mr. Beaumont. I am Pamela James, your event coordinator. I’m calling to confirm your engagement checklist and when you will be available for an appointment with the fashion stylist.I told her to go through Ivanna for every appointments and other things to do, she’ll handle it better. She answered in affirmative and I ended the call.My assistant came in with a cup of coffee I requested few minutes ago. I told her some other things she needed to do before I dismissed her.I was half way through with my coffee when I got a call from Ivanna.“P

Arthur’s POVI was having my breakfast when I got Raymond call. He has the result from the DNA test, the one I was almost dying to have.I picked the call immediately my phone vibrated against the dining table, my heart leaped for the next words I’ll hear from Raymond. Depending on what the result says, I know it will change my view on a lot of events happening around me lately.“The results are in,” he said. “Shall I read them or send the document?”“Read them first,” I said. That’s what I wanted for now, let me hear a third person read it to me first. I may collapse under anxiety in the next few seconds of waiting for the file. Raymond’s voice was calm and calculated as he read the result, knowing fully well how the burden of what he was reading may affect an old man if not read with care.“The DNA analysis confirms a biological relationship between Sample A and Sample B consistent with”“Say it plainly, Raymond,” I cut him abruptly. “No laboratory terms please, I’m too old for tha
