登入Xavier’s POV
Ivanna had been unusually witty these past two weeks. That was the first warning sign and I had missed it completely. Ivanna suddenly stopped pushing for dinner dates. She stopped nagging at every little thing like she always did. She stopped doing a lot that actually cross-referenced the real her, and I stupidly missed it. She became warm, accommodating, and occasionally funny in a dry way, which clearly says… that wasn’t the real her. I had interpreted this new version of her as the natural settling of a tension that had peaked and was now finding a ground level. I should have known better. Ivanna Sinclair did not find her own level. She recalibrated. And recalibration, in her own kind of vocabulary, always preceded a move. I was in my office on Thursday afternoon, midway through a call with the company’s legal team about the property acquisition, when my EA knocked and entered with the expression that goes with information she wasn’t sure how to deliver. I held up a finger to the phone. “What is it?” She placed a printed email on my desk and stepped back. I looked at it. It was a guest list. Two hundred and fourteen names, formatted with the meticulous attention to social hierarchy that only Ivanna and her events coordinator could produce. The kind of list where the order of names communicated more than the names themselves, where being in the first column meant a significant difference from being in the third and everyone on it would know exactly where they had been placed. At the top, in the subject line of the forwarded email: Beaumont-Sinclair Engagement Celebration — Confirmed Venue and Guest List for Final Review. I stared at it for a moment. “Sir?” my EA said carefully. “Get me Ivanna,” I said. “She’s currently,” “Get me Ivanna,” I repeated, in a final tone that means end of discussion. *** She lets the phone ring twice, I know her to well to know that act was deliberate. She answered on the third ring, her voice calm and soothing… like she doesn’t know the exact thing she had done. “Darling,” she said. “I was going to tell you this evening.” “What is this guest list of two hundred and fourteen people about, Ivanna?” “Two hundred and twelve,” she corrected, pleasantly. “Two declined this morning and I’ve already filled the spots.” “Okay… two hundred and fourteen… two hundred and twelve. What is it all about?” I asked again. “Come on baby, don’t do that,” her voice carried the feminine warmth, “that is our engagement guest list. I know you were too busy with running the company, so I thought it will be a good idea not to bother you.” I leaned back in my chair and cupped my face in my spare hand. If I object publicly to this engagement, it will become a story overnight, one the bloggers and my business competitors will feed on. Beaumont heir distances himself from engagement. If I said nothing, over two hundred people will show up to a party that announced a future I hadn’t fully agreed to. If I cancelled it, that is another great problem on its own, considering Ivanna’s father, Kingsley Sinclair’s relationship to the family, as the family’s respected adviser. “When?” I asked. The question felt ridiculous the moment it escaped my mouth. Imagine wanting to get engaged and you don’t even know your own engagement venue and time… haha… that was the joke of the year. “It’s happening in three weeks Saturday,” she said. “At the Alderton Hall. I picked that venue because I know how you’ve always liked there. Remember the Christmas board dinner two years ago was being held there, and you kept on praising the ambiance, especially the acoustics, you said they were exceptional.” I rolled my eyes in distraught. I know what I said woman, and those were not my actual choice of words. “I said the acoustics were acceptable for a speech,” I corrected. “Tomato, tomato,” she replied, maybe cheerfully for her, but it doesn’t sit well with me… if anything, it irked me. I picked up the guest list and read through the first column. It was full of board members, family associates and Kingsley’s network. Several names I recognized from different business and gala events. Family members from the dinner at Grandview I had driven away from five years ago the one that had sent me to the hotel bar bed with a woman I barely knew. I dropped the list back on my desk and sighed deeply. “Tell me, Ivanna,” I said. “Why did you take such a huge step without discussing it with me first .” “I’ve been discussing it with you for two years,” she replied, her voice still tried to be warm but was sharper. “I’ve been patient, Xavier. I have been extraordinarily patient and I have asked for very little. But it seems I had been patient for too long. I’m not asking for the wedding yet if that’s what you’re thinking about. I just need a solid assurance… not verbal alone this time, but action-wise, something to solidify this relationship and tell the public, most of whom had been waiting all these while that this relationship is real, solid and heading toward something real.” Silence fell in the office around me. I looked at the guest list again. “I’ll need to review the venue arrangements,” I said finally, looking for a genuine reason to end the call already. She paused for a second or so before answering. The initial warmth in her tone when she first answered the call was restored. “Of course. I’ll send every necessary detail to your EA.” Then, she ended the call. I dropped the phone and stared ahead into the blank space, my mind running through a thousand thoughts on how I could possibly escape this impromptu engagement arrangement. She has waited for more than five years, what’s with the sudden rush now? I picked up my phone back. I need to talk to grandfather.Ivanna’s POVThe truth about my visit to the estate wasn’t because I had a genuine reason for going. For some reason I couldn’t phantom, Xavier was acting weird lately. I mean so weird, and it’s less than two weeks to our engagement already, I can’t afford to condone any lapses at this point. I went to check on him at his penthouse but he wasn’t there. I called him and he wasn’t picking either, so, I had to add one plus one and I guessed he could be at his grandfather’s estate.Though, going to the Beaumont’s estate means killing two birds with one stone. I know Xavier’s grandfather, Arthur had always had strong opinions about table positioning at formal events, an old habit developed across decades of hosting quite a number of it. Pamela had listed it out specifically that getting his input early would save at least two rounds of revision later. So, you can say I had a genuine reason also. Nevertheless, I’m already at the estate ground. The house was calm when I entered, on one of
Xavier’s POVI drove to the estate the next day around midday.I saw Pamela’s call few minutes after I left the penthouse. I silenced her call angrily, I can’t deal with that for now. Ivanna’s call came into my phone barely two minutes after I ignored Pamela’s. I silenced it too, put my phone on silent mode and dropped it in the drawer.I knew Pamela had already communicated with her and whatever Pamela was calling about earlier had already been relayed. The drive took almost an hour in light weekend morning traffic, the land slimmed gradually into the kind of landscape that made you understand why someone had bought twelve acres of it fifty years ago had decided not to sell. The estate gates opened immediately my car got there on recognition of my plate. ***Margaret met me in the entrance hall with a wild smile.“You’re welcome, Mr. Xavier,” she said with a little smile tugged on her lips before it disappeared, the kind that clearly says these kind of visits are rare. “Mr. Beaumon
XAVIER’S POVBy Friday of that week, my calendar had accumulated four additional engagement-related items without my active participation, a menu tasting Celeste had booked on my behalf for Saturday morning, a call with the Alderton Hall events manager that had appeared in my schedule overnight, a reminder about confirming the final guest list, and a note from Ivanna asking whether I preferred the champagne toast before or after the dinner service.I stared at the calendar for a moment before I closed it.My grandfather also had called twice this week. Both times I had been in the middle of meeting that couldn’t be interrupted, once a call with the legal team, the second time, a board meeting that had been rescheduled once and I couldn’t afford to disrupt. I had called back both times after I was done but my calls only reached his voicemail. I hadn’t called again after then.I had thought what he wanted to discuss couldn’t be anything other than the planning of the engagement party, s
Xavier’s POVI was at my office in the company headquarters when I got a call from Ivanna’s events coordinator, a woman named Pamela. She was one of the A-list events coordinator in the city, her clients are mostly top personalities in the elite circle. I had met her at a couple of social events I attended. So, I wasn’t that surprised when my personal assistant told me Pamela asked to schedule a call with me, I knew it was Ivanna’s doing.“Hello, Mr. Beaumont. I am Pamela James, your event coordinator. I’m calling to confirm your engagement checklist and when you will be available for an appointment with the fashion stylist.I told her to go through Ivanna for every appointments and other things to do, she’ll handle it better. She answered in affirmative and I ended the call.My assistant came in with a cup of coffee I requested few minutes ago. I told her some other things she needed to do before I dismissed her.I was half way through with my coffee when I got a call from Ivanna.“P
Arthur’s POVI was having my breakfast when I got Raymond call. He has the result from the DNA test, the one I was almost dying to have.I picked the call immediately my phone vibrated against the dining table, my heart leaped for the next words I’ll hear from Raymond. Depending on what the result says, I know it will change my view on a lot of events happening around me lately.“The results are in,” he said. “Shall I read them or send the document?”“Read them first,” I said. That’s what I wanted for now, let me hear a third person read it to me first. I may collapse under anxiety in the next few seconds of waiting for the file. Raymond’s voice was calm and calculated as he read the result, knowing fully well how the burden of what he was reading may affect an old man if not read with care.“The DNA analysis confirms a biological relationship between Sample A and Sample B consistent with”“Say it plainly, Raymond,” I cut him abruptly. “No laboratory terms please, I’m too old for tha
Aria’s POVI heard boss’s engagement party from Priya. She had told me that morning in her teasingly manner.Priya was the accounts floor’s most reliable source of information about everything and anything that happened above the fourth floor, and the company at large. Feel free to call her the office blogger. It was on a Friday, around ten forty-something in the morning, I was midway through a secondary reconciliation Marcus had assigned me when Priya suddenly appeared at the edge of my desk, a file was in one hand, her tablet in another, but the look she gave me instantly told me that that wasn’t the bone of contention.“Have you seen the internal memo?” she asked.“Which one?”She turned her tablet toward me.It was a brief, formally worded notice from the Beaumont Group communications office. The kind of internal memo that dressed itself as informational while being, in substance, an announcement. The information was to inform staff that the company would be hosting a private ce
XAVIER’s POVIt was five o’clock in the morning and I had ejaculated thrice already. I looked at the pretty lady on the same bed with me, I had fucked her so hard in the last few hours, as we explored different sex positionsShe was now sleeping peacefully beside me, like all her problems had been
ARIA’s POVThe suite was nothing like the bar beneath it. While the bar beneath was all amber shadows and deliberate dimness, the room the bartender led us to was clean and looked quite expensive, cream walls, dark wood furniture, a king-sized bed dressed in white linen that looked untouched and in
ARIA’s POV“You look like someone about to be ruined.” The stranger said flatly. I blinked up at him. The room still tilted at its edges, my fingers were still curled around the fabric of his sleeve, and my dignity was barely somewhere on the floor between the barstool and where I was currently st
