Oivia
My hands dropped to my side and I didn’t know when a tear escaped my eye.
The Bank?
Was back?
“What?!” I said in a barely whispering tone.
“I….i got a message this evening Olivia. I had just returned from work. I had thought the message was from you. Probably, you were trying to tell me you were going to come home later than usual tonight and I shouldn’t stand out in the cold. B…..b..but when I checked, it was from the bank Olivia.” My father explained, his shoulders heaving as he cried.
I raked my hair with my hands, breathing erratically.
“But what do they want?...a..and didn’t we already pay up our loan?”
“We didn’t pay the interest Olivia?” My dad reminded me, a tear sliding down his face.
“But they can’t hold us for that anymore?!” I found myself yelling.
“Olivia…” My father tried to calm me down.
“No! They can’t possibly do this to us! The bank manager had let us go without paying the interest. Dad, I remember everything. That day, I was the one who had gone to deposit the money myself. It was just the interest left to pay before the time we were given was up and the bank manager whose brother was my teacher in highschool, had said there was no need for us to pay interest dad! He had let us off.”
Why the hell would they send us a message after the bank manager had been so generous to us!
“Olivia, dear. He’s just a manager hunny. He doesn’t own the bank.” My dad said, pulling me into a hug.
“B…b but why did he do it then? Why did he let us off? Moreover, it’s already two years since it happened.” I stuttered, unable to take the burning sensation of anger and pain, in my throat.
I don’t understand.
Why now?
Why would they come back now?
We couldn’t afford a humanly habitable house when I had gone to college. My college fees were to much to even think of getting a house.
Now, I worked two jobs while my dad worked in a dry cleaning shop, we decided to get a proper house.
We had gotten it on a loan three years ago and had paid back every penny we had borrowed from the bank.
The bank manager knew how tough surviving was for us, he had told us to forget about paying any interests, out of generosity!
Why would they send my father such message now?
Why?
We didn’t have any valuable property so we had put the house down for collateral.
And now, they were going to take that?
“They can’t take the house dad, it’s the only thing we’ve got.” I sighed, staring at my father.
He’s getting old already, I can’t let him live in an incomplete building again, with eight squatters!
“You’re wrong baby, we still have each other. And together, we’ll raise the money and pay it to them. I know we will.” My dad said, patting my head.
“How are we going to raise $600 dad? How?” That’s an amount, I’ve never earned as a whole.
“ We were given three , months to pay. We’re gonna raise the money, together.” My dad said, smiling at me.
That smile has kept me going since I was only a little girl.
“ Since I burnt the food…..” My dad finally laughed.
“I brought home some food from the bar.” I said to my dad, pointing to the bag.
Sometimes, I brought home leftovers. We ate them in the morning before leaving for work.
We both went over to the small dining where I had dropped my back.
And for the first time in forever, we ate in silence.
“I quit my job at the coffee shop.” I suddenly said, remembering I had only one job now.
“More time for you to get your beauty sleep.” My dad responded, patting my hand.
“Well I thought about what you said last night, and you were right. The job didn’t even pay enough. I already applied for better jobs online. Hopefully, at least one of them would take me in.” I said to him, now smiling hopefully.
Maybe raising $600 wouldn’t be hard, after all.
My dad smiled back and we continued eating, discussing about how our day went.
I made sure not to mention anything about Asher and Mr Chestnut hair.
While taking out the trash, my mind went back to what happened tonight, at the bar.
Just when I’m running out of options, Asher shows up with his irritating, yet tempting offer.
What did that man have up his sleeve and why would he even be in such desperate need of a girlfriend?
He’s wealthy, he definitely has girls his class, swooping around him.
Why would he come for me?
A black, for a white?
Was he so desperate?
Asher
Sebastian decided to sleepover.
I’m very sure he did that to see if Olivia was going to call back.
Strange that I remember her name though.
Anyway, it’s a good thing he will be staying here. I want him to be here when Olivia calls.
I picked up my phone and stared at it.
Is it strange that I eagerly want her to call me?
Well, I shouldn’t be waiting for her call.
Yes, I’m desperate but I’m sure she’s more desperate than I am.
I mean, who wouldn’t be desperate enough to date Asher Smith?
I was giving her a chance to be with a billionaire, and still earn from it!
Of course, she should be desperate to get out of that wretched life she lived.
My ringing phone snapped me out of my thoughts.
It’s her.
Weirdly excited, I jumped out of my bed and picked up my phone.
Disappointment slapped me in the face when the caller ID flashed on the screen
Mother.
My shoulders fell.
Seriously?
Did she really have to call me right now?
What does she even want?
To yell at me unnecessarily for not being at the office today?
“Hi.” I said dryly , picking up the phone.
“Asher? How was your day dear? Didn’t see you at the office.” My mom said, with a questioning sweet tone.
I knew it.
But why be sweet about it?
“ Yes, so?” I huffed , rolling my eyes even though she couldn’t see me.
“Does this mean there’s finally someone?”
I imagined her wiggling her brows as she said those words.
But wait, just because I skipped a day at work, she already thinks there’s a woman in my life?
“What?!” I said, a little too loud.
“I know you’re not going to talk about her, so I’m not going to push it. You’re Asher Smith anyway, like me, you must surely have goo taste.” She said, bragging unnecessarily.
“Mother…..” I was about to tell her, her thoughts were false impressions but I was quick to caution myself.
For once in a long time, we are having a peaceful conversation.
I shouldn’t spoil this.
“I’m so proud of you Asher! My baby boy is finally growing!” She said, happily.
Whatever.
“Well, let me leave you to rest. Have a good night my love.” She said cheerfully before hanging up.
“Well, that was one unexpectedly peaceful conversation.”
What’s gonna happen if she finds out I’m not with anyone?
Olivia has to call me, by all means.
Even if I have to do worse than I’ve already done, I will make her give her consent to dating me.
OliviaTwo days had passed since my dad got a message from the bank.I called in sick because I couldn’t afford returning to the bar.I can not run into Asher again. Judging our present state, I’m likely to give in to his offer and that is something I do not wish to do.Maybe if he visits the bar more often, and doesn’t see me there, he’ll forget about me and never visit the bar again.Seems like a bad plan. But well……Bad plan is better than no plan at all.Dad decided to start working two jobs so we could raise the money faster.I tried persuading him not to, but he already made his decision.I was scared to check my email. I can’t hide the fact that I’m black.Because of this, I’ve been afraid of getting another rejection message.Well, I can’t avoid my email forever, can I?What if I eventually got the job and out of my ignorance, I lost it?I still haven’t been able to get Asher’s offer off my mind by the way.I just hope I get the job, and I don’t have to think about him and his
Olivia “Took you long enough.” I heard him say from the other end of the phone. I’m sure he must be wearing a triumphant smirk right now. “Why me?” I asked with a cracked voice. Tears were already rolling down my face. He was silent for a while before he answered. “That’s simply because I know you need the money.” He said, sounding unsure of himself. Seriously? He was making such a stupid offer because he wanted to give me a better life? What is it with this man? “So you think you can just impose on me because I don’t have the money you have?” I asked him, feeling angry. “I’ll pick you up later today, 4pm, sharp. Be ready.” He said, ignoring my question. “No!” I interjected almost immediately. I could imagine he had a frown on his face. “I mean, I would rather come to you.” I said to him. “Your dad, right? Trust me, I can relate.” He said, sounding frustrated. “What?” “Meet me at the bar you used to work.” He said before hanging up. “Used to?” Did he possibly use his
Asher We finalized our agreement and Olivia signed the contact in my presence before we left the bar. For some reason, after I told her we were going to kiss, she went mute. Did she have a problem kissing me? It was just a fake kiss anyway. “I can drop you off.” I offered once we were out of the bar. “Why? Do I resume my duties today?” She said, a grin on her face. And for the first time since we met, I noticed the dimple on both her cheeks. “No, I didn’t mean it like that.” I said, shaking my head. “Just kidding. I have my own ride.” She said pointing over to some van. Wait a damn second. That? She owned that? She called that a ride? That van looks like it would collapse in the next second. It took me the whole world not to laugh at her statement. My ride. “I know, it’s not so presentable. What matters is that it still moves, right?” She said, probably noticing that I didn’t sit well with her ride. “Moves? Olivia, you could have an accident with that thing.” She pur
OliviaWhat?!He can't possibly be serious?I had just signed the contract today!Oh no!Where could he possibly want to take me to?What do I even tell Dad? " Olivia? " I heard my name and jerked? My hands slipped from the dining table. Losing my balance, I twirled before falling to the floor, with my butt." Hey! Are you okay? I didn't mean to startle you." My dad said and rushed to me.He dropped the plates he was holding on the table before crouching to where I was, on the floor." It's fine dad, I'm not so hurt anyway." I said, taking his hand and lifting myself up." Are you sure?" He asked, looking at me worriedly.I chuckled and squeezed his hand." I'm fine dad, for real." He nodded before pulling out a chair for me.My father was such a gentleman. My mother must have really enjoyed her marriage with him before her death." You returned pretty quick." My dad said once we had settled down for dinner."Hmm?" I mumbled in my cup." The bar? You said you were going there fo fill
AsherFor some reason, it became difficult to sleep. Even when I finally did, I kept waking up.It felt like the night was longer than it normal should. Why was I looking forward to this date?Even though a part of me wanted to see Olivia's face again, I couldn't admit it.I'm going to go on that date, go on more dates with her in the next three months to make this plan work. It's gonna work and we would go our separate ways afterward." Common man, are you giving birth in there or what?! " Sebastian yelled from outside my room. What's it with this guy?He had insisted on giving me date lessons since I never really went on any.I had come in here to get myself mentally ready for the hell I was about to go through, before Olivia invaded my.....No!I shouldn't think of her." A minute!!!" I yelled back at him.I rinsed my face for the hundredth time before getting out." What were you doing in there?" He asked immediately I was back in my room." The only thing that concerns you is wha
Asher" We?" She repeated." Yes. " I said, not sparing her a glance.I can't believe she was actually going to wear this if I let her.Well, what did I expect? She had called a beat up van her ride. She's probably going to call her clothes enchanting." Why did you wear this?" I couldn't help but ask." What!" She turned to me." Why are you wearing those clothes? Your jeans look faded and there's a large hole in your shirt." I told her, trying hard not to stare so much at the big hole at the back of her shirt.I could vividly see her brak hook and her glowing olive skin.Damn!I shouldn't be thinking about things like this." Oh. I didn't know about that. I'm sorry." She mumbled, making the cutest pout ever.I looked at her sometimes, to catch her trying to cover the hole.Did she really think her tiny hands could cover that?It was cute that she thought so though." We're here." I said, pulling up in front of Luscious and Daring Clothing mall.It was the most expensive mall in the
AsherAll through the drive, I couldn't concentrate on anything else but the petite lady in my car.She seemed nervous because she was always rubbing her palms every once in a while, and also looking down, biting her lower lip.How come such simple things she did made me feel uncomfortable? It was a struggle keeping my eyes on the road when this structure was all I wanted to stare at." I didn't bring my clothes with me." She finally spoke, her voice sounding smaller than usual." Oh." I blinked severally, releasing the breath I didn't know I was holding." Well, we can always get you another one." I said and gave her a half smile. Why do I constantly use the word *we*?" O-kay." She said, doing that thing that she does with her lip, again." Could you stop doing that?" I didn't know when the words flew out of my mouth but by the time I did, it was already too late." What?" She looked up at me, looking so innocent."Stop biting your lip. It's nasty." I said and she nodded. She was ab
Asher"What?!" I whispered, lowering my head.I wasn't surprised she didn't tell her father. He must mean so much to her for her to agree to my offer without informing him.I was surprised my plan was already going sideways on just our first time out."Shit, shit!" I cussed, staring at the waiter as he went around, attending to my customers.Olivia looked really scared. She was visibly shaking." Look Asher, we have to find a way out of here, for me. I have to leave, right now." She said, her eyes glistening with tears." Let's go."Olivia" Let's go." Asher said, his voice was rough.I took my purse with one hand, and used the other to take Asher's hand.He walked a little too quickly. My ankles hurt as I tried to keep up with his pace.As we made our way out of the restaurant, I kept my head bowed.Gosh! How did I not think of the fact that I could bump into any of dad's friends?Just as we were about to enter the elevator, a voice stopped us." Are you leaving already, Mr Smith?" H
