CHAPTER 1

Asher

“For the last time Asher, you are not getting any younger!” My mother yelled at me, her hands on her waist.

Her slim nose was upturned in anger as her lips twitched. She looked like she was ready to devour me so, I coiled on my couch.

I can’t take her tantrums anymore.

Did she really have to do this whenever I wanted to work?

I rubbed my forehead. I’m definitely going to get another migraine at this rate.

As I stretched to reach out to one of my expensive pills on the table, she grabbed it away from my reach.

“I already told you mother, I just need time.” I sighed tiredly.

What was her deal anyway? I’m only 29.

“Look Asher. You either get someone to present at our family dinner next month, or I get someone for you.” My mother warned, her red plastic nails directly in my face.

“Mom?!” I yelled at her.

“I have made my decision Asher and nothing will make me go back on it, certainly no one too.” She finalised.

“But?” Before I could complain, she turned on her heels and clicked away.

“Ugh!” I groaned, sinking back into the couch.

Why is my life so messed up?

Why does she always think she could rule over my life?

Well, if Anna hadn’t let her rule over hers, I’m sure she wouldn’t try doing the same to me.

She’s so impossible!

First, she forces me to take over dad’s company, knowing fully well that I had mine and she could just leave dad’s to Anna.

And now, she’s trying to impose marriage on me?

Is this how she got married to dad?

Once my anger had subsided, my migraine came back.

I just took my medicines and went up to my room, too tired to work further.

Despite the intense throbbing in my head, I still couldn’t fall asleep.

Just how am I supposed to find a girlfriend in one month?

Olivia

“Olly, there are customers at table four.” Mark said, passing by the counter.

“Of course.” I said, rolling my eyes.

He was always so bossy. Well, he was my boss. I just hated the fact that he felt like there was a need for him to tell me to do something all the time.

Of course I knew that there are customers at table four, I’m not blind!

It wasn’t his fault anyway. If I had gotten a job as soon as I graduated college, I wouldn’t be a waitress at his stupid bar.

I quickly walked over to table four.

What?!

These are highschool students! What are they doing in an unlicensed bar, drinking Vodka?

I quickly took their orders and attended to them, ignoring their stares and flirts.

I can’t take this any much longer. I have to get another job or I might as well beat up one of the customers.

I looked at my cheap old leather wristwatch, it was past 11pm already. I bet my father had called my phone a thousand times already.

I walked back to the back of the bar, my legs already heavy from all the running around all night.

I took off my apron and left without informing Mark. It was just best I avoided his annoying face tonight.

My beat up vintage van was still in one piece. With each passing minute, I always get scared that my van is only few minutes from completely breaking down.

Hopping in as gently as possible, I turned the key, roared the engine a little loudly, hoping Mark would hear it and know that I was leaving.

All through my drive back home, I had just one thing on my mind; my father.

All my life, he had always been there for me. I feel so awful for the fact that I couldn’t get a good job in order to give him the good life that he deserved.

My mother died during my birth but my father always told me she was involved in an accident.

I got to know the truth when I was only in middle school. I had overheard my neighbour talking about it. For several weeks, I avoided my father, the feeling of guilt washed over me.

How could he not have taken out all the frustration on me?

Instead, he never seized to show me love in unimaginable feats.

He worked so hard, faced a lot of insults, just to see me through college but right now, I can’t even get him a good present.

“Ugh!” I sighed, staring at the red light across the street.

Now that I look at it, my life is nothing but a red light. It’s been on one spot since forever. Nothing has ever moved, nothing has ever changed.

I would jump on any job that could change my life. Whatever it was, as long as it was going to pay my bills and take care of my old man, I would definitely do it.

Once again, my father was sitting in front of our house, waiting for me.

I managed to plaster a wide smile on my face before getting out of the car. It would hurt him to see me tired.

“Dad?” I walked briskly to him and engulfed him in a hug.

His arms snaked my back and held me firmly but gently.

“Welcome back My princess.” He greeted me with his comforting smile.

“I told you not to stay out so late dad. You could get a cold.” I scolded him but he only smiled.

“And you?” He said, caressing my face.

“Let’s go in. It’s late already.” He said, practically dragging me into the house with him.

Like I predicted, he had made dinner already and didn’t touch it.

“I told you not to bother about this dad.” I cooed, happy that he still made me dinner.

“And I told you to quit your job.” He said taking out a seat for me at our small dining table.

He always had a comeback whenever I protested against him unnecessarily stressing himself.

“Dad.” I tried to protest but he interrupted me.

“Princess, I know you want to support me, provide the best life for us but Olivia, I’m not pressuring you. I know It’s difficult to get a decent job, decently  these days but all the same, it’s not enough reason for you to overwork yourself. Unless you want to look older than I do.” He teased.

“ But you overworked yourself to see me through  college dad.” I said to him and he sighed.

“It was worth seeing my princess in her graduation gown.” He said, smiling.

“ And this is worth helping my dad get by every day until I find a better job.” I replied.

“Well then, but if you get sick again, you are resigning.” He finalised.

“Yes sire.” I said dramatically, putting my hands in the air as we both chuckled.

Even though it came as a joke, I know damn well my father isn’t playing around.

I have to get a new job as soon as possible.

AsherI took a day off from work today, to sort out my current problem. It took me a really long time before I could finally sleep off but unfortunately, I couldn’t complete my eight hour sleep. My mother had called me early today to remind me of our deal. CHAPTER 3
AsherI was enjoying how angry the cleaner had become. Well, she deserved it for soiling my shirt like this.I bet her annual salary can’t even afford my tie.She had even dared to raise her tiny finger in my face. What a nerve she’s got!I was almost smiling at her daring behaviour until I felt something sharp on my face. What the hell?!Did she….just…..hit me?“No way.” I heard Sebastian’s amused voice and turned to him with a hard glare. He quickly composed himself but before I could unleash my anger on the little person that had slapped me, she walked away with no remorse whatsoever.I held my face, still trying to comprehend the fact that a tiny lady just slapped me.“Did….she..just..?” I was finally able to find my voice.“Um…Asher?” Sebastian called me and I looked at him.He shifted closer to me “Everyone’s staring.” He whispered.True to his words, the whole café was staring at me.Aside from when my mother made me wear a shirt to the pool at 17, this is the most embarrassing

CHAPTER 4
OliviaI already applied to seven different companies hiring secretaries.I know the vacancy I was applying for wasn’t worth my standard of education, but I am more likely to not get the job if I applied for something better. Before dad came home, I took my bath and changed into my pencil black skirt and white shirt.Another day as a waitress in that stupid bar. When would it ever end?I packed my hair into a tight pony tail before heading out. It might take a while before I got responses from the companies I applied for. Till then, I have to retain the only job I have left.Hopefully, I wouldn’t be hitting anyone tonight and running off with just an apron.AsherSebastian didn’t support my plan, I knew that but he could do nothing. No one could. I had made up my mind already.I wasn’t one to spend time in clubs nor coffee shops. Most of my time was spent at the office, working while the remaining fraction; at my house, still working.Whenever I felt needy, I just called on one of my

Asher"….what?” Sebastian was taken aback.Just before I could say anything else, Olivia came back with the bottles of water. She was in a haste to leave but I quickly grabbed her hand.“This is not part of your order sir.” She said, nervously.“I know this is your only job Olivia.” I started.“Let me go.” She whispered.“And I know it doesn’t pay enough to take care of your father.” I said and I saw a glint of fear, mixed with surprise in her eyes. She stopped struggling and just stared at me in awe.“ Asher whatever you’re thinking, stop! Let the girl go.” He said, trying to release my grip on her.“So, out of my generosity, I am offering you a job.” Her body relaxed once those words flew out of my mouth.I left her hand but she didn’t walk away.I knew she wouldn’t.“Asher, you are not doing this.” Sebastian tried to stop me, already knowing my plans.I didn’t bother to wait for her to ask what my offer was about, I simply told her.“You need money Olivia, I know that. But I need a

OiviaMy hands dropped to my side and I didn’t know when a tear escaped my eye.The Bank? Was back?“What?!” I said in a barely whispering tone.“I….i got a message this evening Olivia. I had just returned from work. I had thought the message was from you. Probably, you were trying to tell me you were going to come home later than usual tonight and I shouldn’t stand out in the cold. B…..b..but when I checked, it was from the bank Olivia.” My father explained, his shoulders heaving as he cried.I raked my hair with my hands, breathing erratically.“But what do they want?...a..and didn’t we already pay up our loan?” “We didn’t pay the interest Olivia?” My dad reminded me, a tear sliding down his face.“But they can’t hold us for that anymore?!” I found myself yelling.“Olivia…” My father tried to calm me down.“No! They can’t possibly do this to us! The bank manager had let us go without paying the interest. Dad, I remember everything. That day, I was the one who had gone to deposit th

OliviaTwo days had passed since my dad got a message from the bank.I called in sick because I couldn’t afford returning to the bar.I can not run into Asher again. Judging our present state, I’m likely to give in to his offer and that is something I do not wish to do.Maybe if he visits the bar more often, and doesn’t see me there, he’ll forget about me and never visit the bar again.Seems like a bad plan. But well……Bad plan is better than no plan at all.Dad decided to start working two jobs so we could raise the money faster.I tried persuading him not to, but he already made his decision.I was scared to check my email. I can’t hide the fact that I’m black.Because of this, I’ve been afraid of getting another rejection message.Well, I can’t avoid my email forever, can I?What if I eventually got the job and out of my ignorance, I lost it?I still haven’t been able to get Asher’s offer off my mind by the way.I just hope I get the job, and I don’t have to think about him and his

CHAPTER 8
Olivia “Took you long enough.” I heard him say from the other end of the phone. I’m sure he must be wearing a triumphant smirk right now. “Why me?” I asked with a cracked voice. Tears were already rolling down my face. He was silent for a while before he answered. “That’s simply because I know you need the money.” He said, sounding unsure of himself. Seriously? He was making such a stupid offer because he wanted to give me a better life? What is it with this man? “So you think you can just impose on me because I don’t have the money you have?” I asked him, feeling angry. “I’ll pick you up later today, 4pm, sharp. Be ready.” He said, ignoring my question. “No!” I interjected almost immediately. I could imagine he had a frown on his face. “I mean, I would rather come to you.” I said to him. “Your dad, right? Trust me, I can relate.” He said, sounding frustrated. “What?” “Meet me at the bar you used to work.” He said before hanging up. “Used to?” Did he possibly use his

Asher We finalized our agreement and Olivia signed the contact in my presence before we left the bar. For some reason, after I told her we were going to kiss, she went mute. Did she have a problem kissing me? It was just a fake kiss anyway. “I can drop you off.” I offered once we were out of the bar. “Why? Do I resume my duties today?” She said, a grin on her face. And for the first time since we met, I noticed the dimple on both her cheeks. “No, I didn’t mean it like that.” I said, shaking my head. “Just kidding. I have my own ride.” She said pointing over to some van. Wait a damn second. That? She owned that? She called that a ride? That van looks like it would collapse in the next second. It took me the whole world not to laugh at her statement. My ride. “I know, it’s not so presentable. What matters is that it still moves, right?” She said, probably noticing that I didn’t sit well with her ride. “Moves? Olivia, you could have an accident with that thing.” She pur

OliviaWhat?!He can't possibly be serious?I had just signed the contract today!Oh no!Where could he possibly want to take me to?What do I even tell Dad? " Olivia? " I heard my name and jerked? My hands slipped from the dining table. Losing my balance, I twirled before falling to the floor, with my butt." Hey! Are you okay? I didn't mean to startle you." My dad said and rushed to me.He dropped the plates he was holding on the table before crouching to where I was, on the floor." It's fine dad, I'm not so hurt anyway." I said, taking his hand and lifting myself up." Are you sure?" He asked, looking at me worriedly.I chuckled and squeezed his hand." I'm fine dad, for real." He nodded before pulling out a chair for me.My father was such a gentleman. My mother must have really enjoyed her marriage with him before her death." You returned pretty quick." My dad said once we had settled down for dinner."Hmm?" I mumbled in my cup." The bar? You said you were going there fo fill
