Chapter Five

The contract was forty-two pages long, and Zayden had read every one of them twice before Nyra had even been shown into his office.

"Sit, please." He gestured to the chair across from his desk without looking up from the document in front of him, the late afternoon light cutting long shadows across the glass and steel of a room that felt less like an office and more like a statement about the kind of man who worked there. "This won't take long. I prefer efficiency to ceremony."

Nyra sat, smoothing her skirt with hands that had finally, mercifully, stopped shaking sometime between the car ride over and this moment, though the stillness felt more like exhaustion than calm. "I wasn't expecting a meeting without my aunt present."

"That's precisely why I arranged it without her." Zayden finally looked up, and there was something almost like approval in the brief assessment he made of her, as though her noticing the deliberate choice had quietly confirmed something he suspected. "I find people tend to speak more honestly when their family isn't in the room managing the narrative for them."

"And what narrative do you think my family's been managing?"

"I don't know yet." He slid the contract across the desk toward her. "That's part of why we're having this conversation."

Nyra looked down at the document without picking it up, the dense legal language blurring slightly under the weight of how many decisions had already been made without her in rooms exactly like this one. "What exactly am I agreeing to?"

"A marriage of convenience, structured to look convincing to anyone watching from the outside." Zayden leaned back in his chair, folding his hands with the precise, controlled movements of a man who had negotiated far more complicated deals than this one and found them all, in some sense, easier. "Separate finances beyond a household allowance. Separate schedules. You'll have your own wing of the estate, your own staff if you want them, and no obligation to involve yourself in my business affairs unless a public appearance requires it. In exchange, I require discretion, no scandal, and enough convincing affection in public to satisfy a board of people actively looking for reasons to doubt me."

"That sounds less like a marriage and more like an employment contract."

Something flickered across his face, not quite amusement, closer to surprise that she'd said it so plainly. "I suppose it is, in most of the ways that matter. I won't pretend otherwise, and I'd rather you walk into this with clear eyes than with any illusions about what it actually is."

Nyra studied him for a long moment, searching for whatever strategy he might be hiding beneath the careful honesty, and found, to her own quiet unease, that she couldn't locate one. He seemed, impossibly, to actually mean what he was saying. "Most men in your position would have let me believe whatever story made the signing easier."

"Most men in my position aren't currently being investigated by their own board for making an impulsive decision under pressure." Zayden's mouth curved, not quite a smile. "Honesty is, unfortunately, the only leverage I have left to make this arrangement feel survivable for either of us."

It was the first thing he had said all evening that sounded less like strategy and more like exhaustion, and Nyra felt something in her chest loosen slightly, a tension she hadn't fully realized she was carrying until it eased. "Then I'll be honest too. I don't know what I'm walking into here. I don't fully understand why my family agreed to this, beyond the obvious."

"Neither do I, if it's any comfort." Zayden's eyes held hers, something careful and searching in them that made her wonder, not for the first time, exactly how much he already suspected and wasn't saying. "My grandfather left very specific instructions and very few explanations. I've learned to live with the gaps."

Before she signed, there was one more question she couldn't stop herself from asking, even knowing it might sound strange. "Did your grandfather ever mention my family before he died? Before any of this?"

Something shifted behind Zayden's eyes, brief and controlled, there and gone so quickly she almost doubted she'd seen it at all. "Why do you ask?"

"No reason," Nyra said, too quickly, and watched him note the quickness the same way he seemed to note everything, filing it away behind that unreadable composure. "I only wondered if this was always meant to be me, specifically, or if I was simply convenient."

"I don't know the answer to that yet," Zayden said, and this time she believed him completely, which unsettled her more than if he had lied. "But I intend to find out."

Nyra signed the contract without reading every page, which she would later recognize as either the bravest or most foolish decision she had made in years, and left the office with the strange, unsettled sense that the man she had just agreed to marry understood exactly as little about why this marriage existed as she did, and that neither of them had any idea yet how dangerous that shared ignorance was about to become.

---

After she left, Zayden sat alone in his office long after the building around him had gone quiet, turning a pen over in his hand the way he did whenever a problem refused to resolve itself into something he could control.

He pulled up the internal line to his assistant's desk. "Pull the Thorn family's adoption records for Nyra. Full file, not the summary version."

A pause on the other end, longer than it should have been for a simple request. "I can request it, but I should mention, the inquiry was already flagged once this week."

Zayden straightened. "Flagged by whom?"

"The request log shows someone from the Thorn estate's legal office tried to access the sealed portion of the same file two days ago. It was denied. The record's locked under a court order from eighteen years ago, sir. I don't have clearance to override it without a judge's signature, and frankly, I'm not sure anyone does."

Eighteen years, Zayden thought, and something about the number settled uncomfortably in his chest, though he couldn't yet say why. "Why would an adoption record from eighteen years ago require a court seal in the first place? That's not standard."

"I don't know, sir. I can tell you the order was filed under a case number instead of a name, which is unusual enough that it caught my attention when I first searched for it. I can keep digging, if you'd like, but it may take some time to find a judge willing to even confirm the order exists, let alone unseal it."

Zayden set the pen down slowly, staring at the darkened city skyline beyond his window, thinking of the handwritten name in his grandfather's margin notes, half erased, and the three words beneath it that he had not been able to stop replaying since the night he found them.

She must never know.

"Keep digging," he said finally. "Quietly. I want to know what eighteen years ago has to do with my wife before anyone else in this city figures out the same thing I just did."

He ended the call and sat alone in the dark for a long while after, the city lights blurring beyond the glass, turning the pieces over in his mind the way he turned over every problem that refused to resolve cleanly. A sealed record. A half-erased name. A warning written in his grandfather's own hand. None of it fit the shape of a simple business arrangement, and Zayden had built his entire career on trusting the instinct that told him when something didn't fit.

Whatever his grandfather had been protecting, it had been protected carefully enough to survive eighteen years of silence, a court order, and apparently his own family's best efforts to keep it buried.

He intended to find out exactly what it was, even if it meant unraveling the one person in this arrangement he was supposed to be protecting instead.

The chapel erupted into chaos the moment Finch's words finished settling over the room, guests rising from their seats in a confused murmur of alarm and curiosity, phones appearing discreetly from pockets despite the event's strict no-photography policy, the carefully constructed image of a happy, convenient wedding shattering in real time in front of exactly the people it had been designed to convince. "Security, clear the room." Damian's voice cut through the rising noise with the same authority Nyra imagined he used in boardrooms, sharp and absolute, and within moments Hale and his team were moving efficiently through the pews, ushering confused, protesting guests toward the exits with practiced, firm courtesy that left no room for argument. Reginald remained seated longer than anyone else, Nyra noticed, his expression a careful mask of concerned bewilderment that didn't quite reach his eyes, watching the unfolding scene with the stillness of a man recalculating a plan that had

By nine o'clock on the morning of her wedding, Nyra had already rehearsed her own composure in the mirror three separate times, practicing the particular stillness she would need to survive a day built entirely on secrets no one in attendance would ever be told. "Harold Finch still hasn't surfaced," Hale reported quietly to Zayden in the hallway outside Nyra's dressing room, unaware or simply unconcerned that the door stood open enough for her to hear every word while the makeup artist worked carefully around her eyes. "His assistant says he called in sick this morning. No visual confirmation. I have someone watching his residence, but so far, nothing." "Keep someone on him," Zayden said, his voice carrying the same clipped control Nyra had come to recognize as the sound of him managing fear rather than the absence of it. "And double the security presence at the ceremony itself. I don't care how it looks to the guests." "Already arranged, sir." Nyra met her own eyes in the mirror

The vault had not been forced, and that fact alone kept Zaydenawake long after Hale had finished his overnight report and Nyra had reluctantly been convinced to try to sleep in the guest room nearest his study rather than return to her own wing of the house. "No damage to the lock mechanism. No evidence of tampering with the keypad." Hale stood in the doorway at dawn, exhaustion carved into the lines of his face, a tablet in one hand displaying the vault's access log. "Whoever opened it entered the correct code on the first attempt. There's no sign it was forced at all." "Which means it was someone who already knew the code," Zaydensaid, rubbing a hand over his jaw, the sleepless night sitting heavy behind his eyes. "Walk me through who that could be." "Three people, as you said last night. Yourself. Harold Finch, as the estate's executor. And Ashford." Hale hesitated slightly on the final name, the household's longtime butler, a man who had served the Ashford family since before Z

Nyra handed Zaydenthe note before she could talk herself out of it, her hand steadier than she expected given how violently her heart was still hammering against her ribs. He read it twice, his jaw tightening with each pass, before looking up at her with an intensity that made her suddenly, acutely aware of how small the foyer felt around them. "Where did you find this?" "On the table. Just now. No one saw who left it." Nyra wrapped her arms around herself, the evening's cold finally catching up to her now that the adrenaline had started to fade. "They know my name. My real name. The one I only told you an hour ago." "Which means either someone was listening at that door, or whoever is doing this already knew before tonight and simply chose this moment to prove it." Damian's eyes moved to the staircase, to the shadowed hallway beyond it, cataloguing exits and vulnerabilities with the same ruthless efficiency he brought to every negotiation. "I want you to show me what you were abou

Nyra did not leave the hallway outside Damian's study, though she knew she should, though every lesson eighteen years of careful survival had taught her screamed that eavesdropping on Marguerite Thorn in this particular mood was its own kind of danger. She pressed herself close to the wall beside the door instead, close enough to catch fragments through the narrow gap Marguerite had left in her haste, her aunt's voice pitched low but unable to fully disguise the tremor running beneath it. "—a phone call this afternoon. I don't know who, the number was blocked, the voice was altered." Marguerite's words came quick and clipped, nothing like her usual measured cadence. "They knew things about this arrangement that only a handful of people should know. They said the girl needed to disappear again. For everyone's safety, they said, as though that phrase has ever meant anything except someone else's convenience." "Disappear how?" Damian's voice, steady, controlled, though Nyra could hear

Nyra found Zayden in his study that evening, and for the first time since the engagement had been announced, she walked toward him instead of away from him. The study door had been left slightly ajar, and she had stood outside it for almost a full minute before working up the nerve to knock, rehearsing and discarding a dozen different ways to begin a conversation she had been avoiding since the fitting room window. He looked up from the papers scattered across his desk, something briefly surprised crossing his face at the sight of her standing in his doorway unannounced, a courtesy neither of them had extended the other before now. "Is something wrong?" "Someone's watching me." The words came out faster than she intended, stripped of the careful composure she usually wrapped around anything difficult. "A black car, parked outside the Thorn estate for the past few days. Today the driver got out and looked directly up at my window. He wanted me to see him. I'm sure of it." Zayden se
