Emma woke to the sound of rain.

Not the heavy kind. Just a soft, steady tapping against the windows.

She reached for her phone. 3:47 a.m.

Sleep refused to come back.

She lay there a while, listening to the house settle around her, before giving up entirely.

She slipped out of bed, pulled on a cardigan, and padded downstairs, hoping warm milk might succeed where exhaustion hadn't.

The hallway was dark and silent. Kingsley Manor always felt larger at night, as though the rooms multiplied when no one was watching.

As she passed the sitting room, a faint glow caught her eye.

The balcony doors stood slightly open.

Someone was outside.

Ethan sat alone beneath the covered terrace, a mug untouched beside him. The rain stopped just past the roofline, leaving the gardens washed silver under the moon.

He hadn't changed out of the clothes from dinner. He looked like a man who'd simply stopped moving at some point and let the hours pass over him instead.

He didn't turn around.

"I heard you walking."

Emma wasn't even surprised anymore.

"You always hear people coming?"

"Usually."

She stepped onto the balcony. "I thought you'd be asleep."

"I wasn't."

"I noticed."

Neither spoke for a moment. The quiet wasn't uncomfortable. Just unfinished.

"It's cold," she said.

"You should go back inside."

"You could do the same."

"I could."

He made no attempt to move, and after a moment, neither did she.

"I've noticed something," she said. "You rarely sleep."

"I sleep."

"Barely."

"Is it work?"

"No."

"Stress?"

"No."

"Most people would elaborate."

"I'm aware."

"Do you ever plan to?"

"Not tonight."

Emma shook her head. He had a talent for answering questions without answering them.

"Then why?"

The rain seemed louder for a few seconds.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter than usual.

"I haven't slept properly in years."

Emma turned toward him.

Years. Not weeks. Not months. Years.

"What happened?"

His jaw tightened, almost imperceptibly.

"The dark is difficult."

"Why?"

He watched the gardens instead of her, as though the answer were out there somewhere among the wet hedges rather than in his own chest.

"It reminds me of promises I failed to keep."

Nothing more. No names. No story.

Emma waited. He didn't continue.

The gardens went on being silver and quiet, indifferent to whatever he wasn't saying.

She looked at his coffee, long gone cold.

"I'll be back."

He didn't ask where she was going.

The kitchen lights were dim. The night cook looked up, startled. "Mrs. Kingsley?"

"Sorry to wake you. Could I make some coffee?"

"I'll do it."

"No. I'd like to."

The woman stepped back, uncertain, and watched Emma find the mugs on her own, as though this were something she needed to do with her own hands rather than ask for.

A few minutes later she carried it back upstairs herself, steam curling into the cold air.

She set it beside him without a word.

He looked down at it.

"You didn't have to."

"I know."

She didn't stay. There didn't seem to be anything left that needed saying, and some things were better left as a cup of coffee and nothing more.

Back in her room, Emma lay awake a while longer, thinking about what he'd said.

Promises I failed to keep.

She turned the phrase over the way she might turn a stone in her pocket, looking for the smooth side and finding only edges.

She couldn't picture Ethan making a promise lightly. Which meant whatever it was, it still mattered. Enough to cost him years of sleep over it.

She thought about asking Nathan. She decided against it. Whatever this was, it belonged to Ethan, and he would hand it over on his own terms or not at all.

By seven, Ethan was back in his study. The mug Emma had brought him sat empty beside a folder he hadn't opened yet.

Nathan knocked once and let himself in. "You look tired."

"I'm fine."

Nathan set another folder down without comment. He'd worked for Ethan long enough to know which questions were worth asking twice, and which weren't.

"Your nine o'clock is early," he said instead. "Should I have them wait?"

"No. Send them in."

Nathan paused at the door. "You should try sleeping sometime."

"I've tried."

It wasn't the kind of sentence that invited a follow-up, so Nathan didn't offer one. He'd stopped expecting an answer on that particular subject years ago.

"One more thing," Nathan said. "The Foster Foundation gala is Saturday. I've declined it twice on your behalf."

"Then decline it a third time."

"I would, except Mrs. Kingsley's assistant already accepted for both of you this morning."

Ethan looked up from the folder for the first time since Nathan had walked in.

"She did what?"

Neither of them spoke of the balcony again.

Some silences build walls.

Others build understanding.

Emma wasn't sure yet which one this was.

She was, however, fairly sure she'd be finding out on Saturday, in a dress, in front of several hundred strangers.

Wednesday morning began with a knock on Emma's office door. She looked up from the grant proposal she'd been revising. Rachel leaned against the frame, holding two cups of coffee."You've become impossible to surprise.""I've become married to a man whose assistant schedules breakfast three weeks in advance."Rachel laughed. "I still don't understand how you survive that house.""Neither do I." She accepted the coffee. "What brings you here?"Rachel hesitated. "Someone's outside asking questions."Emma's smile faded. "What kind of questions?""About our donors."The man introduced himself as a freelance researcher. He carried a notebook. He smiled too easily."I'm writing about charitable organizations."Emma had met reporters before. This wasn't one."What publication?""I'm still deciding where it'll be published."Rachel's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. Emma kept smiling."What exactly would you like to know?""The Kingsley Foundation.""We're a separate nonprofit.""I know."

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S REPLACEMENT BRIDE   Chapter 23: A Seat at the Table

Tuesday mornings rarely waited for anyone.By eight-thirty, the executive floor of Kingsley Industries was already alive with assistants moving between conference rooms, lawyers carrying thick binders, and the quiet urgency that came with decisions worth millions.Emma stepped out of the elevator beside Ethan. "I still think I shouldn't be here.""You've said that three times.""I've had several minutes to think about it.""You'll probably say it again.""I probably will."Nathan, a step behind them, cleared his throat. "I've made a note that Mr. Kingsley smiled before nine o'clock.""I did no such thing," Ethan said."I'll amend the record to 'almost smiled.'"Emma laughed softly. The sound followed them all the way to the boardroom doors.Conversation stopped as they entered. Around the polished table sat directors Emma recognized from newspaper photographs and annual reports. One of them didn't bother hiding his surprise. "I wasn't aware today's meeting included guests."Before Emm

Monday returned with the brisk efficiency Emma usually appreciated. This morning, it felt exhausting. She arrived at the nonprofit ten minutes early and lost herself in work before anyone noticed she was quieter than usual. It was easier to count donated backpacks than unanswered questions.Rachel found her in the supply room, kneeling beside three open cartons. "You alphabetized the notebooks.""They were already alphabetical.""So they were." Rachel folded her arms. "That's twice in two days.""I like order.""You like avoiding conversations.""Is there a difference?""Usually." Rachel crouched beside her. "You want to tell me what happened?""I overheard something yesterday.""I remember.""I keep thinking maybe I misunderstood. And every time I convince myself I did," she closed another box, "I remember how it sounded."Rachel stayed quiet. Sometimes silence invited better answers than advice."I don't want to become suspicious of him," Emma admitted."So don't.""It's not that si

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S REPLACEMENT BRIDE   Chapter 21: The Woman He Never Forgot

Sunday arrived wrapped in the kind of quiet that made Kingsley Manor seem less like an estate and more like a place where people simply happened to live.Emma found Ethan in the conservatory. Not with a laptop. Not with a report. Just a cup of coffee and the morning paper folded beside him."I'm beginning to think you secretly own every room in this house.""I pay the mortgage.""I suppose that helps.""You slept?""Better than you.""I slept.""Barely."He didn't argue. That counted as progress.Nathan arrived carrying a slim folder. "I apologize for interrupting.""You rarely do," Ethan said."Our investigator checked in."Emma looked away automatically. Business. She had learned that much. "I'll leave you to it.""You don't have to.""It's all right."She smiled politely and headed toward the gardens. Neither man noticed that she slowed when she reached the open French doors. Not enough to eavesdrop. Only enough to hear the next sentence."The woman has been identified."Emma's foo

Saturday mornings were not supposed to come with surprises.Emma discovered this was less a rule than a hope. She had barely finished breakfast when the front gate intercom rang. Nathan answered it. Then frowned."That's unusual.""What is?" Ethan looked up from his coffee."Mrs. Bennett is here."Silence settled over the dining room. Emma's fork stopped halfway to her plate."Margaret?" She looked at Ethan. "My father's wife."Nathan nodded once. "She says she doesn't have an appointment."Five minutes later, Margaret Bennett stood in Kingsley Manor's drawing room. She looked exactly as Emma remembered. Perfect hair. Perfect coat. Perfect posture.Only her eyes gave her away. She hadn't slept."Emma.""Margaret."Neither moved to hug the other. Margaret clasped her handbag tighter."I wasn't sure you'd see me.""I wasn't sure you'd come."That earned the smallest wince.Nathan quietly disappeared, closing the doors behind him. Ethan remained. Not speaking. Simply present.Margaret no

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S REPLACEMENT BRIDE   Chapter 19: Almost Honest

Friday evening traffic crawled through the city with the stubborn determination of something that had long ago accepted it wasn't going anywhere quickly.Emma glanced at the unmoving line of brake lights ahead. "We've traveled exactly twelve feet in the last five minutes."Nathan looked up from the tablet in the front seat. "Twelve and a half.""You measured?""I estimated.""You estimated half a foot?""I've had practice.""I don't know whether that's reassuring or deeply concerning.""Both."Even Ethan looked up from the folder on his lap.The fundraiser had ended nearly an hour earlier. Another charity. Another ballroom. Another reminder that Olivia's interview hadn't disappeared from public conversation.Emma had smiled when required, answered polite questions, ignored the less polite ones. Now she was simply tired. The car lurched forward a few feet, then stopped again."Accident ahead," Nathan said."How long?""Forty-five minutes, they're saying.""I suddenly miss speeches.""I
