Ethan came home expecting an ordinary evening, the emergency board session finally behind him, already thinking about what to make Emma laugh about over dinner.

The house was too quiet before he'd even fully stepped through the door.

He knew the difference between an empty house and a quiet one by now, the particular texture of a space that had someone missing from it rather than simply someone asleep or working in another room.

"Emma?"

Nothing answered him but the sound of his own voice return

They didn't get their quiet morning. Emma woke fully to the sound of Nathan's voice downstairs, low and urgent, and the particular tightness in it that had come to mean, over the last several weeks, that whatever news he carried wasn't going to wait for coffee."The perimeter sensors triggered at three this morning," Nathan said, the moment Ethan reached the kitchen. "Brief window, north side of the house. Whoever it was didn't stay long enough to trip the secondary alarm."Emma felt the warmth of the night before drain out of her all at once, replaced by the particular cold clarity she'd learned to move through quickly now instead of dwelling in."Elias," she said, already moving toward the stairs."He's fine," Nathan said quickly. "I checked the nursery myself the moment the alert came through. Nothing disturbed anywhere near him."Emma went anyway, needing to see it herself, and found her son exactly as she'd left him, small and warm and utterly unaware of how close danger might ha

"Don't look at it directly," Ethan said quietly, pulling Emma gently away from the window. "Preston, is there a back exit?""Through the kitchen," Preston said, already on his feet, considerably more frightened now than he'd been through his entire confession. "You think that's them?""I think we're not staying to find out," Ethan said. They left through the alley behind Preston's house, Ethan's hand never once leaving Emma's, moving quickly but carefully in the dark, and it wasn't until they were three blocks away, safely inside a rideshare Nathan had arranged within minutes of Ethan's call, that Emma finally let herself breathe again."Marsh," Ethan said quietly, staring out the window at the passing streets. "I've known him for years. He's quiet. Unremarkable. I never once looked at him twice.""That might be exactly why it worked," Emma said. "Nobody looks twice at unremarkable."They didn't speak again until they were home, Elias already asleep, the house quiet around them in a w

Preston's house was smaller than Emma expected, tucked behind a quiet hedge a few streets from Kingsley Tower, the kind of unremarkable comfort a man might choose specifically because it never invited questions."You don't have to come in with me," Ethan said, parked at the curb, his hand tight around the wheel."I know," Emma said. "I'm coming anyway." She reached over and laced her fingers through his, steadying them both the way she'd learned to over the last two years. "Whatever happens in there, we still go home together tonight. Say it back to me.""We still go home together," Ethan repeated quietly, and something in his shoulders eased, just slightly, at the sound of his own voice saying it.Preston opened the door himself, no housekeeper, no assistant, his face already carrying the particular exhaustion of a man who'd known this visit was coming since the moment the anonymous message named him."I wondered how long it would take you," he said, stepping back to let them in. "Lo

Audrey died a little after two in the morning, quietly, the doctor said, without pain, the particular small mercy of a woman who'd spent seventy years bracing for a considerably worse ending than the one she finally received.Richard didn't cry until they were back in the car, and Emma held his hand across the console the entire drive home, understanding, in a way she hadn't fully expected, that he was grieving a mother he'd only just found and a friend of that mother's he'd known for less than two days, both losses arriving at once with nowhere yet to put them."She gave us everything she had," Emma said quietly, somewhere past the halfway point of the drive. "Right up until the end.""I know," Richard said. "I keep thinking about what she asked us to do. Finish it properly. Loudly." His voice caught slightly. "I don't know how to do loud. I've spent my entire life being careful.""Then you're in good company," Emma said. "I only learned how a year and a half ago myself."Nathan was

Audrey woke again just after midnight, weaker than before but lucid, her eyes finding Richard first among the small group gathered carefully around her bed."You heard that," she said, before he'd asked. "I wondered if I'd said it loudly enough for anyone to catch.""Who is Genevieve?" Richard asked gently.Audrey was quiet for a long moment, something old and tired moving behind her eyes. "She's the woman I stopped being, the year Thomas Halloway disappeared. Audrey was safer. Audrey had no history anyone could trace back to the company, to Eleanor, to any of it.""You changed your name," Emma said slowly. "The same way Eleanor's family scattered theirs across trusts and firms and quiet placements. You were hiding too.""I was terrified," Audrey said simply. "I watched what happened to Eleanor. I watched what happened to Ruth. I decided, quietly, at twenty years old, that the safest version of myself was one that had never existed at all in any record connected to Kingsley Industries

The medical team moved quickly, practiced and calm in a way that did nothing to slow the particular cold panic spreading through the room, Emma pulled gently back toward the doorway while nurses closed around Audrey's bed."Her heart again," Ethan said quietly, watching through the narrow window. "Same as my father.""She's ninety-one," Nathan said. "It could simply be exactly what it looks like.""It could be," Emma said. "I don't believe that's what it is."They waited in the hallway for nearly an hour, the same particular furniture Emma had memorized once already at Cedar Grove, before a doctor finally appeared with the same careful, practiced exhaustion Dr. Hensley had once worn."She's stable," the doctor said. "For now. Her heart is considerably weaker than it was yesterday. I won't pretend otherwise. If you have questions you need answered, I'd encourage you not to wait much longer to ask them."Nathan pulled Emma aside the moment the doctor left, his expression carrying someth
