I stared at my twin sister’s face with a questioning look, still couldn’t believe what I just heard. I didn’t expect that her one last wish would be this consequential that would greatly affect my life.
All of a sudden, I felt reluctant to fulfill my promise. ‘Why did I put myself into a difficult situation such as this?’ I asked myself. Then I thought, ‘Or was it only a prank?’
“I didn’t know that you also love playing a prank, my dear twin sister,” I remarked, followed by an awkward laugh. But deep inside I was really anxious. What if she was serious about it?
And my suspicion was right. Angela remained serious as she dejectedly stared at me.
I stopped laughing as I bit my lower lip. ‘So, it’s not a prank.’ I whispered inside as I sat straight in my seat, waiting for what she would say next.
“It’s not a prank, Ash. I’m really telling you my last wish. I want you to attend the wedding on my behalf. They will not know since we look alike. Anyway, I understand if you can't do it for me.” She mumbled with a gloomy expression in her eyes. Then she stood up from her seat and acted to walk away.
Seeing her dispirited, guilt consumed my heart. I quickly stood up and pulled her right hand, stopping her from leaving.
“Anj, I’m sorry. I just - I just couldn’t believe it. You know, I wasn’t aware of it. You didn’t mention it before. Can you enlighten me? I mean, what arranged marriage? Who is that man? And why do you want me to pretend? Besides–”
I was not able to finish what I wanted to say as Angela cut me off by raising her right hand in front of me.
“Wait, Ash. Calm down. I know you have a lot of questions. I will tell you everything.” She uttered as she sat back in her seat.
I followed her and sat back in my seat as well. Then, I let out a deep sigh. “Alright. I will listen.”
Angela sipped her water before she started. And after putting down the glass of water, she clasped her hands together on the table.
“I think I was eighteen at that time when mom had this arrangement with her college best friend after they met at their Alumni Homecoming. That I will marry the son of her best friend when I reach twenty eight of age. Of course, at first, I was against the idea because I don’t know the guy, but later on, I agreed.” She revealed. Then she paused for a while as she sipped her water again. I just looked at her, waiting for her to go on with what she was saying while trying to figure out how I could help her.
And so, she continued, “I agreed when mom got sick. You know, because I didn’t want to give her more worries. Because that was the only thing I knew that would give her peace of mind. Hoping that it would help her get better.”
“Then why don’t you just get married?” I inquired, thinking there was no problem at all if she would do as they planned.
“I can’t marry him now because of my condition. Listen, Ash. If only I could postpone the wedding. But it was already scheduled. Unfortunately, next week will be my surgery as well and it will take place overseas which I cannot delay since it took me a year to have a schedule with the surgeon. That’s why I really need your help. Only this one, please? Don’t worry, I will be back as soon as I can.” She explained desperately, trying to convince me.
My forehead creased as I was confused. “I still can’t get it, Anj. Why don't you tell him your reason? I’m sure he would understand. He might even help you.” I insisted, neglecting the other things she said.
“Ash, he might, he might not pursue the wedding when he learned about my disease.” She reasoned, worry was visible in her eyes. Nevertheless, I ignored it.
“Then, don’t push through with the wedding!” I suggested. It sounded like I solved my twin sister’s problem with that idea.
“Listen, if I don't push through with the wedding, I will pay them ten million dollars. Where will I get that amount of money?” She confessed.
My eyes widened in shock as I repeated, “Ten million dollars? But why do you need to pay them?”
“Because everything was set already and it’s stipulated in the agreement that if the marriage didn’t take place, there’s a fine. That’s why I could no longer back out.”
This time, I was the one who took a sip of water since my throat suddenly felt dry. I realized that my twin sister was really in big trouble.
“Why’s there such an agreement? And why did you agree?” I questioned as I knitted my brows together.
Angela took a deep breath before she replied. “It was mom who made that agreement because she really wanted me to marry the son of her best friend, thinking that it was the best for me.”
“Still, it didn’t make sense. Okay, given that there was such an agreement. Do you think they will still charge you for that fine after knowing that you are sick?” I wondered.
My twin sister didn't respond right away as if she had run out of answers to my questions. After a while, I heard her let out another sigh.
“Ash, you still don’t understand. Maybe they are really after the money. Anyway, it’s okay if you don’t want to help me.” She conceded with a frown.
I could feel that she was upset by the way our conversation went. And that made me worry. I didn’t want her to feel like I didn't want to help her.
“Anj, it’s you who doesn’t understand. You know, it’s not that simple. I would act as someone's wife. And you’re fully aware of what a married couple does. And that’s okay with you?” I explained calmly, hoping that she would understand me this time.
“Remember that it’s only an arranged marriage. Thus, no love between us. And come to think of it, we don’t know each other yet which means that we will start getting to know each other first. They didn’t even set a honeymoon for us. So, there’s really no chance that we would make love after we get married.” She explained as she stared deeply at me like she was evaluating if I was convinced or not.
I didn’t reply, so she continued.
“Anyway, I also have an idea of how you could avoid making love with him until I return. If only you would agree.” She divulged. Then she paused for a while before she added, “If only I had a choice, Ash. Of course, I would not put you in this kind of situation. But – but I understand if you will not do it as you promised.”
I was lost for words after her last sentence. I could also see how disheartened my twin sister was. I stood up from my seat. Then I placed my arms on the railing on the balcony and looked away. There are so many things going on in my mind like, ‘What can I do? Why does it seem that I don’t have a choice but to agree? Sigh. Should I agree because I already made a promise? “Don’t you think that it will only get more complicated when I pretend? What if they learn that I am not the real Angela? Look at me. Yes, we have similar looks but we have different personalities. What if he noticed that I’m a different person?” I asked for one last time while looking at the hazy moon. “I’ve never met him in person before so you don’t have to worry. And to tell you honestly, I don’t know much about him and his family because they are living overseas. Mom just told me before that he’s five years older than me and a baker. That's all I know. So, it’s really not a problem.” She stated nonchalantly. He
Wearing my classic aesthetic wedding dress, I stood frozen in the middle of the aisle as everything flashed back in my memory after I saw the familiar face of the man near the altar. ‘It cannot be,’ I murmured in disbelief while my heart was beating wildly in my chest. And as I looked at him, I felt as though time had slowed down. The sweet piece of music in the air earlier was now fading away while everything around us became blurry in my peripheral vision. However, I couldn’t be wrong. How could I forget that exquisite face? His remarkable face that I dreamed about for several nights after our first encounter on the cruise ship. It was him. It was indeed Leo King! And… and he’s the groom?! But how come? I could clearly remember the face of the man in the picture that Angela showed me. And it was definitely not him! I was in a daze while my eyes were searching for the man in the picture that my twin sister showed me, thinking that I must be mistaken. That maybe the man standing
And just like that, one month passed by so quickly. Yes. It's been a month but I am still not used to my life now. I was always left alone in this villa. If Sarah hadn’t visited me every weekend, I might have gotten bored to death already. Anyway, I was right. We got along well. And there’s one thing we have in common. We love coffee! That’s why we always go out to have some coffee every time she visits me. Good thing, I had some savings to spend, I didn’t need to ask my busy bee husband for money. Although he gave me a bank card for my allowance I'd rather keep it for Angela since it wasn't really for me. It's for her. However, I was worried about my twin sister as I had no news from her if her operation was successful or not. The last message I got from her was on the day before she would go to the operating room for her operation. She told me not to worry about her and that she might not be able to call or text me for weeks since it would take some time before she would fully r
My brows furrowed, thinking why he couldn’t just tell me directly what the occasion was. ‘Do I look like a fortune teller to predict what’s the occasion?’ I grumbled in my mind. But as we approached the garden, I couldn’t help but be amazed. “Wow!” I uttered in astonishment, seeing the venue adorned with colorful flowers and lush greenery, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. There were also balloons and elegant lanterns hanging from the trees, casting a warm glow over the area. And as we reached the entrance, a welcoming arch made of blooming roses and cascading vines greeted us. However, I felt a little anxious when almost all the guests turned their heads after they noticed us coming. And from how they dressed, they all seemed to be from the upper class. So, I assumed that the host of the party might be a very important person of the same class. Subsequently, I saw Sarah from afar approaching us. At first, I almost didn’t recognize her when she beamed dazzlingly at us as
I glanced at Leo, waiting for his reply. And as I stared at him, I couldn’t help but look down at his lips and recalled his sweet kiss. My heart pounded at the thought. So, I took a deep breath as I averted my eyes from him and focused on the food on my plate. Then I heard him clear his throat. “Our family is like the world’s tallest mountain. Not everyone can reach the top," he replied figuratively. I arched my brow as I wondered the meaning of his statement. And as I contemplated I slowly realized that my suspicions before were both right and wrong. From the luxury brand of his suit to his grand villa. He could afford all of those not because of his hard-earned money but because he was really rich, contrary to what Angela told me. “So, how wealthy are you?” I queried as I got interested if he would dare to tell me. “If you can count the stars, you’ll know the answer to your question.” He declared before he took the glass of water and drank it. I couldn’t manage to reply as
“It’s been a while, Jake,” Leo stated plainly as soon as he came near us. Then, he grabbed me by my waist and pulled me closer to him. Another surprising gesture from him. “Right. It’s been a while,” Jake responded with a thin smile and patted Leo on his arm. Then, he glanced again at me. “So, when did you return?” Leo asked. I didn’t know but I could feel the tension between the two of them in the way they converse. Jake’s smile widened. “I just came back yesterday. You know, when I received the invitation from your mom, I didn’t hesitate to come. Anyway, congratulations.” He said, throwing me a quick look before his eyes darted again at Leo. Consequently, I felt uncomfortable with his gaze so I looked away. “I see,” Leo uttered, looking down at me. Then, he cleared his throat before he added, “So, we have to go. Everyone outside is waiting for my wife.” I suddenly raised my head at Leo as he emphasized the words ‘my wife’. I couldn’t understand but it brought a fluttery sens
I woke up to the gentle touch of a cool damp cloth on my burning face. “Hmm…” I moaned without opening my eyes as I was still feeling dizzy. “What came to your mind and you drank too much alcohol?” I heard Leo mutter angrily. So, I tried to open my eyes. And I was right. It was not my imagination. It was him. I found him sitting beside the bed while staring down at me. But my head was still spinning. Hence, I clutched the edge of the mattress, trying to steady myself. Still disoriented, I smiled as I asked innocently in a slurred speech. “W-What al-alcohol?” Then, I closed my eyes again, wishing my wooziness would subside. “So, you don’t remember what you did?” He questioned as he continued wiping my face with a damp cloth. “O-of course, I re-remember! I remember everything.” I responded boldly. “If you really remember anything, what happened earlier?” “You k-kissed me earlier, didn’t you?” I told him the only thing I remembered at the moment as I held his hand, stopping h
As I picked up my phone, I got disappointed as the caller was not Angela. So, letting out a deep sigh, I pressed the answer button. “Hello, Mom?” I mumbled. Then, I bit my lower lip as I recalled what happened yesterday at the event. Good thing, there were no more visitors when I passed out. ‘What a shame!’ I thought as I felt embarrassed about what I did. “Angela, how do you feel today?” Sarah asked worriedly on the other end of the line. “I’m okay, mom. I’m sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean to–” I apologized but I was not able to finish my words as Sarah cut me off. “No, dear. You don’t have to say sorry.” She countered. “But mom–” I would insist but again, she didn’t let me finish my words. “It was me who should apologize, Angela. I supposed you were shocked and anxious about the honeymoon thing. That’s why you drank a lot. So, I’m sorry, if we haven’t informed you about it.” I was not able to respond right away as I was surprised that she guessed it right. More than tha
