"Mommy, do angels eat bread?"

The inquiry floated over to me as I tied the last knot on Ethan's school shoes. I looked up, sleepy eyes blinking furiously as I strained to come up with some mystical answer from a mind that had not received nearly enough rest.

I stared at the reflection in the mirror. My fingers grip the edge of the marble sink. My breath was shallow and uneven, like the air was taunting me with its weight. The house was too quiet, except for the faint sound of laughter from Ethan’s room. His voice. His innocent, bright voice. The one thing I swore to protect, even if it meant destroying myself.Suddenly, the door cracked open. Then I heard her voice behind me.Firm. Sharp. Cutting through the silence like a blade.“Sophie, for how long will you keep hiding the truth? Come on, you need to tell Lucas to protect Ethan.Damien will never stop, and you know what that will mean.”I turned slowly, meeting Kattie’s eyes in the mirror before facing her completely. She stood at the doorway, arms folded, her expression set in steel. Her presence filled the room like a storm—uninvited, unavoidable.I swallowed hard. My throat burned with unshed tears. “Kattie…“No.” Her voice cracked like thunder. “Don’t even start. I war

Damien's POVI couldn’t sleep the night before.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan’s face. His smileHis mannerismsHis eyes—those damn eyes. The same stormy gray that haunted me in the mirror every day.It was too much to be a coincidence. It was too perfect to be fate.I paced my office the next morning.Fingers tightening around the glass of whiskey I hadn’t touched.I couldn't drink anymore—not since I promised myself I’d never numb my decisions again. But today… Today was different.I stared out the wide glass window of my office. The city spread beneath me like a living beast, pulsing with lights and secrets. Her voice kept echoing in my head:"He’s not your son, Damien. Let it go."I couldn’t breathe that day. And when I asked to meet his parents, Sophie panicked like a criminal caught red-handed.Why? Why run if you had nothing to hide? Then the door opened softly without a knock. My assistant stepped in, her voice low, as if she feared even the walls hearing her.“Good

Damien's POVI sat in my office, staring at the polished glass desk, but I wasn’t seeing it.Not the neat rows of contracts. Not the email notifications flashing on my laptop screen. All I could see was him. That boy. That smile. That confidence radiated from the stage like he had been born to shine.Ethan.Every time I mention his name, something inside me cracks open.He has my eyes.He has my arrogance. And the way he stood when he received that award—chin high, daring the world to challenge him—It was me.Not Lucas. Not any other man.Me.I couldn’t stop thinking about Sophie.I couldn’t get Sophie’s face out of my head. The way her eyes widened when I asked to meet Ethan’s parents. That terrified look on her face. The panic across her delicate features before she snatched the boy and bolted out like I was a predator.Only, I wasn’t a predator.I was a man desperate for answers. Her lips trembled like a truth struggling to escape. Then she ran outWith Ethan.I sat in my office o

I couldn’t breathe. The applause from the auditorium still echoed in my ears, but my chest felt like it was caving in. Ethan’s shining moment, His perfect performance,The award clutched in his small hands—none of it mattered now because Damien’s eyes had found us.He didn't just find us. He looked, pierced, relentless, and seared through the crowd until every nerve in my body screamed with a warning I could no longer ignore.“I want to meet his parents,” Damien had said.My legs trembled immediately when I heard that.My palms turned clammy. The air thickened with invisible chains that bound me in place.I shook my head quickly, forcing a smile I didn’t feel, clinging to composure like it was my last weapon. “Not now,” I whispered. “It’s late. He’s tired.”Damien’s gaze narrowed. “Sophie,” he said, my name rolling off his tongue like it always had that night—the night that changed everything—firm, dangerous, yet intimate. “Introduce me to his father. Is Lucas, my brother, the fa

I sat frozen in my seat. The applause still roared around us, but I could not hear it anymore. All I could see was Damien’s eyes fixed on Ethan. His gaze burned like a flame that threatened to consume everything I had built.Ethan walked down from the stage, still holding his little award as if it were a crown. His smile was pure. His innocence shone. But Damien was staring at him the way a man would stare at his own reflection.I knew what he was thinking.I knew what he was about to do.Terror ran through me like ice.“Can I… meet his parents, please?” Damien’s voice finally broke the silence again. My chest tightened. Those words sliced through me like a knife.“He wants his parents. Damien's POVI sat quietly in my office on a Thursday morning, drifting away with thought. My phone suddenly beeps. “Official Invitation – Guest Host for Willow Creek Elementary Annual Talent Contest.”I scanned through the message and raised a brow. “Hmmmm, this school once partnered with one of the charity foundations I had supported years ago. It would be good PR to attend, a good way to distract myself from the awkward air that still lingered after my return to Houston.” I mutteredSophie's POVEthan's school contest day finally arrived. The school auditorium was bright and packed with excited parents, teachers, students, and guests. The energy buzzed with innocent joy and nervous tension as Damien arrived in a dark blue suit, sunglasses shielding his eyes from the sun and unnecessary attention.I watched Damien arrive at the school auditorium earlier than expected. The staff members rushed to welcome him, some clearly starstruck, others professionally composed. He nodded in
